Booked Anthem of the Seas

A friend of mine had mentioned RCL Anthem of the Seas and my first thought was that I would rather spend my $ on another Disney Cruise. Nevertheless after checking out the itinerary and the cost I decided to book it. Anthem of the Seas is a new ship and it has a lot of cool features I am interesting in checking out. I can say with confidence that even though I'm wandering away from DCL (for this one cruise) I'll never give them up completely. I have a Disney Cruise reservation for November and I plan on booking another Disney Cruise on board the ship. BTW, I love my Travel Agent because when I called to book this RCL cruise I asked if they provide any shipboard credit and they said they only do that for Disney Cruises but since I have been a loyal repeat customer they would definitely do something for me. I think that is just awesome! Anyone else planning on booking Anthem of the Seas when she is in the US?

we bounce back and forth between royal and disney cruises - we usually do a disney in oct combined with a trip to WDW for food and wine and the halloween party, and then do a royal cruise in jan or feb to escape the cold. we're booked on anthem this december, though - couldn't wait 'til jan or feb to try her. :teeth: We went on quantum, anthem's sister ship, this past january, and absolutely loved it. it's a different experience than disney, but still great. i've been on 7 royal cruises, so if you have questions, ask away!

Anthem is definitely intriguing, although I'm also tempted to book Harmony for late 2016.

How did you find the booking for dynamic dining?

we've got a harmony booking for feb 2017. seems so far away, but we're going with a group of friends (currently 13 total, with more possibly to join), and that was when everyone could get away.

i was really skeptical of dynamic dining, as i'd tried norwegian once and hated freestyle, but ended up pleasantly surprised. i did miss having the same waiters every night, but there were a couple of restaurants we went to multiple times and ended up having the same servers, so we still got that personal interaction somewhat. in general i think royal's main dining room food is better than disney's, and the food on quantum was even better. despite my initial hesitation, now i'm kind of bummed about going back to traditional dining on my next royal cruise (we're doing an older ship this summer).

hard to talk about the booking process because i was randomly pre-selected to book my restaurants early when royal was trying out their new booking system when they started dynamic dining. so, we got everything we wanted, because i was able to book before the general public. :) we left two nights open on board to be flexible. one we decided to eat at jamie's italian, and were able to get an open slot just by going to the restaurant - it was an hour or so earlier than we usually eat, but no big deal.

i'd recommend booking most nights beforehand, but it's easy to add or change once onboard. the only trouble we had was moving our reservation at The Grande (the dress-up restaurant) an hour earlier, as they were totally booked - we were staying in a suite so had to get the concierge to change it for us. that's the only time we ever had to use the concierge for reservations, though. i will say that royal's online cruise planner kind of stinks, but you can always call royal to book your dining if the website is acting up.

also, on anthem royal has introduced something called "classic" dining if you don't want to do true dynamic dining. classic is basically disney's rotational dining - it rotates through american icon, chic, the grande, and silk, and you stay with the same waiters and tablemates the whole time. classic 1 is early dining (i think 6) and classic 2 is late dining (8:30). we've signed up for this on anthem as 3 of my party of 4 have allergies/eating restrictions and figure it's easier to have the same waiter. that said, it's the same group of 4 that went on quantum, and we had no problems then dealing with the restrictions - we just had to explain them every time to different waiters, which was annoying but no different than going out at home.

sorry for the novel. :) i hope that helps!

Thanks for both your comments Robin. I am curious about a few things regarding RCL... Considering that you cruised with both RCL and DCL what would you say might be the major differences between the two? Second, is there anything I should book or consider booking ahead of time such as the adult dining, virtual skydiving, rock wall or any other ship features. Thanks in advance.

i'll start with the easy question. :teeth: As far as booking ahead of time, you'll want to book dining (unless you chose "classic", which is like disney's rotational), shows, and ifly (the skydiving simulator) ahead of time.

rock wall, flow rider, and north star (the observation bubble) do not take reservations, unless you want private lessons on the flow rider, and even then you may have to book them onboard.

ifly is probably the most important to book ahead of time, as it gets filled quickly. people sometimes chicken out on board, though, and then you can take a standby slot. on quantum we totally made some family's day when my party of 6 all cancelled and their 5 family members were all able to go at once. so, it does happen! (fwiw, i do plan to try on anthem - i wasn't feeling well on quantum and DH hurt his neck/back so he couldn't go, but it looked pretty cool and i really do want to try it.)

as far as shows onboard, they also have standby slots, but if you want better seats i'd book those ahead of time, too. the show in the 270 venue - i think the show is called "spectra's cabaret" on anthem - is probably the most important to book, as 270 is pretty small. "we will rock you" in the main theater will probably have standby spots, but probably better to book just in case - if you don't show, someone on standby will get in, so no big deal. shows like the headliners and guest entertainers (musicians, comedians, etc) don't need reservations - there's generally plenty of room.

if you're doing true Dynamic Dining, i'd book ahead. if you're doing Classic Dining, which is like disney's rotational, all you have to book are specialty restaurants if you want to try them. just a heads up that unlike disney, the specialty restaurants on royal are not adult-only -- kids are allowed in them. that said, i've rarely seen kids there, though that may be because i tend to eat late (8:30-9ish start time). Wonderland was fun, and sold out quickly, so i'd definitely book that beforehand if you want to try it - all the other specialty restaurants had availability onboard, though jamie's was kind of tight.

booking for entertainment/ifly/dining opens up randomly a few months before. there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. i usually find out on my roll call on cruise critic (similar to the disboards cruise meetup threads). sometimes i'll just check the royal website cruise planner every week or two until reservations are finally available, starting about 6 months out. royal's IT dept is not the best (though neither is disney's....). :crazy2:

i think royal and disney are more similar than different. for the record, although i love wdw and enjoy my disney cruises, royal is my favorite cruise line, so just keep that in mind when you read my comments. :) (i've also been on celebrity and norwegian, but neither floats my boat, so to speak, so we've sailed exclusively royal and disney for quite a few years).

before dynamic dining, i would have said rotational dining on disney was the biggest difference, but now that royal has "classic" dynamic dining which is basically the same thing, that's no longer true. i think the MDR food on royal is better, but disney's buffet and palo are better than royal's buffet and specialty restaurants (though there's really not too much of a difference). on quantum, cafe 270 was fantastic and my favorite lunch spot on any ship ever. royal also has more food available at night - part of their buffet on quantum/anthem is 24-hours, there's a cafe on the promenade open all night (it may close for an hour or two for cleaning at like 3 a.m.) and there's a pizza place open til 2 a.m.

i guess that's a good segue into the nightlife on royal, which is why i prefer it. i'm a night person, and disney is boring at night, quite frankly. royal has shows and activities until 2 a.m. or later, there is always at least one pool and hot tub open (unlike disney, which closes them all at i think 11 pm), and places to snack at night.

royal has a casino, which disney doesn't. i dont gamble, so not a huge difference for me, but definitely a difference in general.

royal has an adults-only area called the solarium with a couple of small pools, hot tubs, and a bar. it's beautiful, but the pools are so small they're not really usable as pools. i'd give royal the edge for atmosphere, but disney the edge for the adult pool itself.

no fish extenders on royal. i love them on disney, so that bums me out. most royal cruises have a "roll call" on cruise critic and sponsor activities through there, though, including a "meet and mingle" which royal itself sets up for people on the roll call - they have snacks and drinks and meetings with the officers, and raffles where you can win prizes. roll call members commonly organize other stuff - on quantum we had a gift exchange (didnt make up for no FE, but it was something), slot pull (which i did even though i'm not normally a gambler - everyone contributes and all the $$$ is put in one machine and everyone takes a few spins, and you split the winnings/losings), cabin crawl (see everyone's cabins), and pub crawl (where we got a special of 5 drinks for $10 or so plus free snacks). not all roll calls do all that, though - it just depends on whether someone is willing to organize.

both disney and royal have similar plays/shows, with comedians, musicians, etc. i think disney's shows, like golden mickeys, villains tonight, etc, are cute. but i think royal's are better - some of them are very close to broadway-quality. apparently the cast of "we will rock you" on anthem was in the london version, so serious actors. royal does not have a dedicated movie theater like disney, though sometimes they show movies in the main theater, including 3d movies.

we've always lucked out with good service on royal, but i think overall disney's service is probably better. we've never come across an unhelpful cast member on a disney cruise.

i don't know which anthem itinerary you're looking at, but i've found labadee to be equivalent to castaway cay. there is no adults-only beach on labadee, though.

i'm sure i will think of more the minute i post this. :) but hopefully this'll give you an idea, and if you have particular questions, just let me know.

oh, i did think of one more major thing - no split bath on anthem. the shower, sink and toilet are all in the same bathroom. might be important if you're traveling with a friend. the bathrooms are a decent size, though. :)

WOW!!! Thanks for all the information Robin it will definitely help me plan my cruise since I never sailed with RCL before. The RCL cruise I booked is the 12 night Western Caribbean that my friends and their young daughter are on but obviously I will have my own stateroom since I'm cruising solo (I've done 7 Disney and 2 Holland America cruises solo).

I did select dynamic dining but I might change this since my friends are doing classic dining. I will also attempt to book the early items you mentioned above. Thanks again for your detailed responses. I really appreciate your help, tips and advice.

We are considering a RCCL Anthem cruise, but have only cruised disney before. This thread was insanely helpful! Thanks!

if you have any other questions, just ask away. it's been a while now since i've been on quantum, but i might still be able to help, and i'm on anthem this dec. and i just read this post now because i was on a different royal caribbean ship for the past week. :p
