Canadian Buffoon's Semi-EPIC Vacation - 10/29 - Link to new TR!

I'd say you were right...
But I really have no idea.
Hey, in a world where I'm ever right... let's just stop there and enjoy it :thumbsup2 :rotfl:

Wisdom comes with age.

Which is a lie old people tell
so youngsters won't pick on them.
Oooh, I'll try it out on my nieces and nephews. :thumbsup2

It's like it was made for sashaying.

Actually, I believe it was.
I completely agreed. They should actually change it from pedestrian bridge to sashay bridge. :snooty:

It was valuable intel.
That just turned out
to be wrong.

I was just telling someone about it.
"Well, it's definitely not even close
to the best chicken I've had...
But it's much better than other

fast food places."
This is a very accurate statement.

Really!
I'm hoping to get back there
and do some of my own

glass experiences. :)
You just let me know! Would love to see you again... though I do keep hoping our Disney trips will overlap someday, too :rolleyes1

Four hours.
But better than postponing
it when I couldn't see it at all.
That is absolutely true! So happy it worked out for you :goodvibes

Lemme know how it works.
It hasn't for me, yet.

I completely agreed. They should actually change it from pedestrian bridge to sashay bridge. :snooty:
::yes::
This is a very accurate statement.
It is!?!?!?
This is a first!!

Woot!
You just let me know! Would love to see you again... though I do keep hoping our Disney trips will overlap someday, too :rolleyes1
And we just miss each other
by one month this time.

That is absolutely true! So happy it worked out for you :goodvibes
It did! :goodvibes

Last weekend, I had a small little road trip
to Newton, Iowa.

That's not a small road trip.

Thought that was pretty cool.

Very cool!

DSC07766_zpsovmg2yns.jpg

So quaint!

But (for me) the real prize came in
this discovery:

I vaguely remember him. Very talented.

Covered Bridges winery.
In Madison County.

But of course.

After dutifully snapping the photo
of the house (the museum was closed;
which was fine, I really just wanted to
see the house, itself.)

At least you can say you saw it.

And now... behold!
My first ever covered bridge.

It's beautiful. I hope to one day see one.

Once inside the building...
I was shocked at how beautiful
it was!
I expected a fairly plain,
governmentally drab interior.
I was dead wrong.

This is beautiful. I don't think I have ever seen a state capital that looked this ornate.

I finally got to try Chick-fil-A.
I won't say it's the best chicken
I've had (far from it), but I will
say that I enjoyed it quite a bit.
So much so that I had it again,
on the drive home.

I don't love Chick-fil-A but we do have it fairly often.

A couple of comments.
1. The sky was a lot more ominous looking
then the photo really shows.
The sky wasn't just dark... it was dark green.

That's one ugly sky. You seem to attack interesting weather when you travel.

I took this photo once I was settled
into my grandstand seat.

Untitled_Panorama1_zps38ztlslr.jpg

Very cool photo.

There was a neat moment when
Gene Kranz, who was the Chief
Flight Director for Gemini and Apollo
space missions (including Apollo 11)
dedicated the race in honour of the
50th anniversary of the moon landing.

Great way to honor the event.

I got back to the hotel sometime after 2:00am.

Tired... but happy to have seen the race.

That was one very long day.

You seem to be having lots of interesting road trips.

Sorry for my extended absence, but I just got back last week from my own Disney Glamping trip at Ft. Wilderness, and I've been busy with everything that piles up while I was gone.

Okay...
Maybe I'm exaggerating just a touch.
But...
OKW is big and sprawling.
And where our room was...
Was in the farthest building away.

We actually just stayed at OKW for a couple nights before Ft. Wilderness. That wasn't the original plan, but there was a tropical storm brewing in the gulf of mexico and it was projected to hit Louisiana the morning I would also be driving through Louisiana. So last minute change, we decided to leave two days early and hence -- I booked a couple nights at OKW.

You're right -- this place is massive. And our room was pretty far out as well -- but since we had a car, I wasn't too worried about the distance from the main area. But oh man -- I wouldn't want to make that walk.

We popped over to Olivia's which was
pretty much empty at that time of day.

I got the buttermilk fried chicken one night and IT. WAS. AWESOME.

So good in fact, that we tried to go to brunch the next morning -- I was all about getting it again -- but the wait was over an hour, so we ended up passing.

Yes it was good -- but I wasn't going to let it get in the way of pool time at Animal Kingdom Lodge (kidani).

Ummm... sir?
Just where exactly are you
putting your hand????

looks like she was quite....how can I say this delicately?

Accommodating.

And as I drove away, in my rear-view
mirror... I caught a glimpse of the B2
as it flew manoeuvres in front of
the (presumably) spell-bound audience.

Still haven't forgiven her for that one.

Damn kids! Always getting in the way!

While Elle got herself up and ready
(around 6:30am), I had a nice breakfast
of bacon and OJ.

We arrived at the bus stop at 7:05am.

Your daughter is unlike any other woman I've met. Up and out the door in 30 minutes? I'm lucky if we can leave 45 minutes after I say we need to leave right now.

"I'll let it go this time."
I was both surprised and happy
to hear that!

Completely shocked the guard let you bring in a glass container. Nice for you -- but does seem odd that they'd bend the rules at all.

Immediately after, one of them
asked. "Want a ride?"
I'd never taken a Main St. conveyance!
Sure!!

those are fun to ride -- but since we're usually with a stroller -- I've never done them with my kids at WDW (we have done them at DL). The only other times I have ridden them are when doing the All Ride Challenge. I think most people have no idea that they're available.

And you know what?
It was fun!
They kept having to beep the horn
at people who were wandering
in the street, which was pretty funny.

I'm a little shocked people aren't constantly run over actually.

Elle and I got in line for 7DMT around 8:25am
and were on about 20-25 minutes later.

I'm shocked the wait time was that short...especially since you went to space mountain initially.

Geez, Elle! Don't put your hand
in front of my face! Sheesh!
I told her to please be more careful,
and that we'd have only one more
chance of getting a good photo
before the ride ended.
Okay... photo coming up in 3...2...1...

that is too funny!!!

I saw the sign...
I took the off ramp...

And there was nothing.
Just a sign saying there
was a town seven miles north.

I'd have definitely just gotten back on and hit up the next one. But I'm more of a destination person as opposed to a journey person. One reason my wife and I don't make for good road trip partners. She wants to stop and explore. I want to get there. It's hard wired into my brain.

At this point, it was pretty
much a foregone conclusion
that I'd be going to the Danish Museum.
When I drove into town, the first
thing I noticed (because it's almost
impossible not to) was this:

They totally tricked you!

Hurried, because I didn't want
my rapidly melting shoes to
sink into the bubbling lava-like
concrete.

It was a tad.... scorching out.
(36C/97F)

Hopefully it was a dry heat???

The place was so full of marble
and glass and statuary that it
would be very easy to lose track
of time.

Kind of amazing how almost all state capitals (at least all the ones I've been to) -- are showcases of extreme governmental waste. Don't get me wrong -- they're absolutely amazing -- but holy cow. People back in the day really knew how to blow through a budget! I can't imagine what these buildings would cost now to build.

One other thing that I finally
was able to check off my to-do list
(It wasn't on my bucket list, but...)
I finally got to try Chick-fil-A.
I won't say it's the best chicken
I've had (far from it), but I will
say that I enjoyed it quite a bit.
So much so that I had it again,
on the drive home.

For fast food it is one of the best...and the service for fast food is probably the best of any large chain.

Okay... it's too danged hot.
It was still five hours to race time.
I made the 40-minute drive
back to the hotel where I
showered and changed.
In that order.

usually helpful to do it in that order. Good call.

A couple of comments.
1. The sky was a lot more ominous looking
then the photo really shows.
The sky wasn't just dark... it was dark green.

dark green can usually mean a good chance of some tornadoes.

2. Those jets you see are all owned by
race car owners.
N500PR is Penske Racing while the other
two are owned by Andretti family members.
(All of the well-known Andretti drivers have
the same initials. Mario, Michael and Marco,
hence the tail numbers ending "MA".)

Private jets is the one thing I'd love to be able to do. It would make traveling sooooooo much better.

The race turned out to be a good one.
My guy finished second after having
gone down a lap midway through the race,
so I was satisfied with the result.

If you aint first, you lost!

It was soooo much rougher
on the FP side.
I was unpleasantly surprised.
I think it really depends on which car you get and how well or poorly it's been maintained(or its age)....

The last time I went and had a FP, they sent us to the "peasant" line. It was the roughest I recall. It's gotten rougher over the years in general, but that one was really bad.

That's not a small road trip.
It's only 12 hours, one way.
So for me... small road trip. :)

So quaint!
It was! And a surprise!
I vaguely remember him. Very talented.
Funny, too. :)
But of course.
Yeah, I was shaking my
head that I hadn't figured
it out before. :sad2:
At least you can say you saw it.
::yes::
I was okay with the museum
closed. I don't know if I
would've gone in anyway.
It's beautiful. I hope to one day see one.
I was pleased, but...
I'd like to see one in a
more remote (i.e. pretty)

setting.
This is beautiful. I don't think I have ever seen a state capital that looked this ornate.
Okay...
I'm glad you said that.
I was wondering if maybe
all the State capitol buildings

were as ornate as this.
I don't love Chick-fil-A but we do have it fairly often.
I can see that.
It's not great...
But it's good.
And above par for

fast food.
That's one ugly sky. You seem to attack interesting weather when you travel.
I'm starting to wonder
if I need to heed some
signs, or something.
Very cool photo.
Thanks! :)
Great way to honor the event.
::yes::
That was one very long day
:faint:
Yes!
I was pretty tired by
the time I got back.
But I'm really glad
they ran it.
I had a window that
I could have watched it if
they ran it on Sunday...
But if that had been rained out...

Then it would've been a wasted drive.
You seem to be having lots of interesting road trips.
That's what they're for! :)

Sorry for my extended absence, but I just got back last week from my own Disney Glamping trip at Ft. Wilderness, and I've been busy with everything that piles up while I was gone.

Yeah, it'd be...
You'd need to pack a meal
and plenty of water.

Hmm... wish I'd known.
I don't think we would've gone
back to Olivia's but...
I might have ordered that
instead of the crab cakes.

Or in addition to them.
looks like she was quite....how can I say this delicately?

Accommodating.
She spread her...

wings. And flew.

Damn kids! Always getting in the way!
Don't have kids!
Your daughter is unlike any other woman I've met. Up and out the door in 30 minutes? I'm lucky if we can leave 45 minutes after I say we need to leave right now.
Shocking, right?
She did that every day!

Completely shocked the guard let you bring in a glass container. Nice for you -- but does seem odd that they'd bend the rules at all.
I was shocked too!
Maybe because I told him
I was putting it in a locker,
that swayed him?
I don't know.
But very surprised.

And relieved!
those are fun to ride -- but since we're usually with a stroller -- I've never done them with my kids at WDW (we have done them at DL). The only other times I have ridden them are when doing the All Ride Challenge. I think most people have no idea that they're available.
I certainly didn't. I thought it
was for VIPs only.

I'm a little shocked people aren't constantly run over actually.
I am too.
Maybe that's why they need

two people to drive it.

Interesting comment!
I know it's expensive and...
the worst part is the gilded roof.
Here's some numbers for you:
The building was built (finished) in 1886.
The gold leaf roof was redone in 1965
for $80,000 and again in 1999 for $482,000.
Wanna guess how much it will cost to
re-gild it now??

However, I found this interesting tidbit:

The building commission made its final report on June 29, 1886, with a total cost of $2,873,294.59. The audit showed that only $3.77 was unaccounted for in the 15 years of construction.(from wiki)

For fast food it is one of the best...and the service for fast food is probably the best of any large chain.
I was very surprised that they
bring the food to the table!

dark green can usually mean a good chance of some tornadoes.
The thought definitely
crossed my mind.

Private jets is the one thing I'd love to be able to do. It would make traveling sooooooo much better.
Just become a multi-millionaire.
Or billionaire.

Simple!
If you aint first, you lost!
Well... true, but...
Before the final yellow,
he was a lap down in about
8th-10th place.
The difference in championship
points is 20 points for 10th and
40 points for second.
The series points leader won that
race but only gained 10 points
on the championship.
The following weekend, he won
the race (50 points) where the
points leader spun on the final
lap and finished 14th

(36 point differential.)[/QUOTE]

Obviously I would bring pajamas!
What if I came down for two or three nights? Would that ruin your trip?
Well considering I only have one bed
(asked for a King) and won't be there
for part of it... It might ruin yours!

I think it really depends on which car you get and how well or poorly it's been maintained(or its age)....
I hadn't even thought that
it might be the cars that were
the problem!
The last time I went and had a FP, they sent us to the "peasant" line. It was the roughest I recall. It's gotten rougher over the years in general, but that one was really bad.
Ouch.
Why I won't ride it anymore
unless I "have" to.
(Keeping someone company.)
But in the very near future,

I'll be saying "Have fun, bye!"

If you're not familiar with Victor Borge
(1909-2000), feel free to simply put
it out of your mind and read on.
(Or stop reading out of sheer
boredom, frustration or revulsion.)
Oh my gosh!!! I love Victor Borge.
If you've never seen his punctuation skit, you should. It's hilarious.

This is a thing that I know about you. But I didn't realize quite how large the collection had become!! I think of you whenever I drive by a Harley Davidson store, but of course I'd never in a million years consider picki
Same with me. I even checked out the 3 different ones in Orlando for him, but turns out they're all HD of Orlando, just different stores

Maybe you've never seen it... ;)
Great movie and funny scene. Like the bar fight scene the best. :rotfl2:

This is interesting -- I didn't realize that one side might ride differently than the other. I do remember one ride I had felt a lot rougher than normal -- but I chalked it up to being older...but there is a good chance that I did go to the left on that ride instead of the normal FP side.

Awww... thanks for thinking
of me, you guys. :)

Great movie and funny scene. Like the bar right scene the best. :rotfl2:
Weird.
I've seen it twice...
And don't remember it!

Maybe it's a combination of track,
temperature and cars?

I really don't feel like doing an

experiment to find out.

Glad you're here now. :)
How was the trip?

It had several eventful moments. Obviously -- the first being the tropical storm which necessitated I move the dates forward two days (wife couldn't leave early -- so I booked her a last minute flight from Houston). Pretty sure it worked out better for her -- she got 2 days without me or the kids -- and I got to drive two kids halfway across the country. We didn't make too many stops b/c even bathroom breaks seemed to take 30+ minutes since I had to be the one doing everything.

Other than the occasional 18 wheeler trying to run me off the road while driving through Louisiana, it was a pretty easy drive.

That was until 13 miles away from Old Key West. The last toll booth I made the mistake of seeing "exact change" lane and thinking, "I have $1.75 exactly! I don't need to make change from the attendant! Yes!"

Only to realize "change" meant literal "change." Not a one dollar bill with 75 cents.

No worries, I'll just back up and switch lanes to an attended lane.

So I look behind me and see nothing but open road. Start backing up and...

CRUNCH.

WHAT???

Look in my mirrors -- still don't see anything.

Look in my back up camera -- see what appears to be a shawdow.

Look more carefully

black sports car!

&$&%$&^%#*%&*$*^%$^#^&%*$@!!!!!

Basically traded a little paint with a black corvette. Felt bad for the guy -- and felt incredibly stupid.

Ended up not going through insurance since it was so minor -- still a $400 goof up though. Definitely kicked myself for the better part of two days...and even dumber now that I realized I could have just blown through the toll plaza and just got a bill in the mail!!! You know -- for $1.75 plus a convenience fee. :headache:

Not the best way to start out the Disney vacation -- but still not the worst thing that could happen.

I'm actually considering doing a short TR for this trip, since it did have some other mishaps along the way. hehehe

Glad you were able to leave
early and get out ahead of
the weather.

How was the drive?

Weather was pretty good. First half was pretty heavy traffic -- but the whole drive through Mississippi, AL, and FL was actually not bad at all -- with the exception of the whole fender bender at the end.

She spread her...

wings. And flew.

:rotfl2:
Rope drop, baby!

Still -- it always seems that 7DMT instantly goes to 60 minutes within 10 or 15 minutes. We got on 7DMT right before rope drop (had a PPO BOG breakfast), and by the time we got out of the ride at like 9:10 -- the line was horrendously long. I'm honestly shocked you were able to go from Space to 7DMT without any issue.

Interesting comment!

My guess to re-gild now would be over a million.

According to a website I just checked -- they said that $2.8 million would be about $80 million today (based on inflation) -- but it also said a construction cost of $2.8 million back then would be $4.9 BILLION!!!

https://www.measuringworth.com/dollarvaluetoday/?amount=2800000&from=1886
I'm guessing people in the 1800s didn't have very high...ahem...labor...ahem...costs.

Also didn't have pesky regulations to get in the way either.
