Crazy things you've heard people say about Covid-19

The newest hot button here is people all saying they don't know anyone who's had it, and they don't know anyone who knows anyone who's had it. It's not appreciated when you start listing names, including names of people the person you're speaking with knows, of people who have had it, some of whom are still attempting to fully recover -- and in a couple cases two people who've actually died. Skepticism immediately steps up to move the goalposts by suggesting tests are wrong all the time.

There's no making one who won't open their eyes see.

I am in no way a denier of COVID-19; I wear a mask, make my kids wear masks, have only recently allowed them to begin to do some outside socializing, do the shopping for my elderly parents and cancelled our Florida vacation that was to have started today, but I don’t know a single person who has had it. I realize you weren’t specifically addressing me, but I just wanted to mention that there are people who don’t know anyone, but aren’t necessarily deniers. On the contrary, I just think it hasn’t reached our area quite yet and am worried that’s it’s coming. Just as the kids are going back to school and eldest DD goes back to college.

 Why is this a crazy thing to say if it's true? I've said it - I discuss it with people fairly regularly. It has no implication whatsoever that Covid doesn't exist or isn't a problem. As of today, there have been 6,387 cases** diagnosed since March 15 in my city (pop. 1.4 million). Many people I know have been tested, myself included - all negative. Where (figuratively speaking) all these cases are is something of great interest. Only one person I know reports personally knowing people who have been diagnosed.

**ETA: 115 deaths for a mortality rate of 1.8% - there's no reason to disbelieve this.

I absolutely know people who don't know anyone who's had it. That's wonderful news! But it's ridiculous to then stretch it to say -- and I don't know anyone who knows anyone who has it and then not accept when I or someone else tells them I know these people from work, I know this person from church, my daughters have friends and/or coworkers who have been through it or have family who have been through it, my husband has coworkers around the country and in other countries who have had it.

I've had the discussion with coworkers who say they don't know anyone and when you respond with, what about Rich from the third floor, or what about LuAnn from FOC whose husband was in ICU for six weeks, or how about these four from these departments who have passed? Suddenly they're not certain the testing that diagnosed the virus was accurate and they're not certain that's really what these people had or died from. They simply refuse to accept it for whatever reason. Personally I'd be waiting for the anvil to fall on my head or the bolt of lightning to strike.

Oh, OK - so you were talking about your own personal anecdotes rather than the statement in general. That's a little different than I read it.

My SIL and BIL won't wear a mask because "they don't know anyone who's had COVID", and don't see a reason to wear them. This was before our State made masks mandatory. It will be interesting to see if they are wearing one now.

And the people who believe this is all a hoax and hyped by the media, and the flu kills more people annually.

That's why I said in my first post that it's not appreciated when you respond with knowing someone, or when you respond with names of people they know who they've been informed have/had it, or worse have passed from it. All of the sudden within the past two-ish weeks it's become a "thing" for people to make the specific statement, I don't know anyone and I don't know anyone who knows anyone who's had it. For all I know it's tied to something on Facebook and that's why it's happening and I don't see it since I don't do Facebook. I do know people get testy when you respond about knowing people and I don't know why.

I remember the discussion early on here on the board, probably still in March, where people were asking that question. At first not many, then suddenly several people did. I wish I didn't. I wish no one did. Even though no one close to me has passed away, it feels very strange in a way I can't explain when I think of the people I do know who have passed from this. I can't think of the family from church who lost their mother/grandmother without choking up, I think that's because I know how awful it was for them to be so scared about her, not be able to see her, and then not be able to gather normally and be supported in person to mourn her.

Actually, people are considered non contagious 10 days after testing positive. My daughter’s boyfriend was supposed to come on vacation with us. He tested last Sunday, he was positive. The cdc called him and gave him this information (also considered not contagious 4 days fever free, but he wasn’t sick). They told him he might get a positive test for up to 6 weeks.

True. I have also heard that people are generally not contagious after 10 days. However, if a person continues to test positive, you really don't know if that's a lingering result of the initial test or a new infection. Some people who test positive, then negative are contracting the virus and testing positive again. I feel like there's still not enough information about this virus to make any solid conclusions. I would think as long as a person is testing positive, they should take precautions to avoid spreading the virus and stay home.

This. A friend shared this on Facebook.

I just cant sit back and pretend nothing is happening.. I am awake...Please tell me your awake too and here's why.

“In 4 months, the U.S. transformed into an obedient socialist country. Government dictated what events are acceptable to attend. Violent protests that instill fear are OK but church services, family funerals and patriotic celebrations are dangerous. And you bought it without a fight.

Standing in a graduation line is a "safety hazard". Small businesses were forced to close but crowds to support the corporate money machine at WalMart, Lowes and Home Depot are OK.

Come on. It's "just a mask" & "safety precautions".

How about a little hush money. Here's $2,400 that we stole out of your pay check in the first place. Enjoy. Buy something with it. From a big corporation.

Cash is dirty. We can't give change. There's a coin shortage. Use your card. In 4 months, they convinced you to use a traceable card for everything.

In less than 4 months, government closed public schools then "restructured" education under the guise of "public safety". In less than 4 months, our government demonstrated how easily people assimilate to "guidelines" that have NO scientific premise whatsoever when you are fearful.

In less than 4 months, our government successfully instilled fear in a majority of the population in America that allows them to control every aspect of your life. Including what you eat, where you go, who you see and your toilet paper.

And the most dangerous and terrifying part? People are not afraid of the government who removed their freedom. They're afraid of their neighbors, family and friends.

And they hate those who won't comply.

It's absolutely terrifying to me that so many people don't question "authority". They are willing to surrender their critical thinking skills and independence. They just... gave up without thinking. Without a fight.

Do you know what's coming next?
"It's just a vaccine. Come on. It's for the greater good".

Wait until you're told that you can't enter any store or business without proof of the Covid-19 vaccine. Wait until you can't go to public events or get on a plane without proof of receiving the vaccine.

To everyone that doesn't believe this is possible - DO YOU UNDERSTAND that government successfully dictated to people WHEN they were allowed to be outside, where they were allowed to go, and how their children would be educated in less than 4 months? And that a majority of the population followed blindly because they were told to do so.

You're kidding yourself if you think this behavior won't be repeated with a vaccine. Or whatever the next step is.

"I don't follow politics."
"Who cares about that stuff?"
"I don't like to think about it."

They got you. Without a thought. Without a fight. Just like France. Just like Russia. Just like China. Welcome, comrade.”
Oh, I would have been all over that ********. Too bad none of my friends posted it. They would have been lambasted.

Some of this isn't very far fetched. I'm watching some of it happen as we speak.

The stupidest for me is having to deal with a husband who thinks it’s stupid to wear a mask. I have talked and talked to him about why we need to wear them and it doesn’t help. He will only wear one when forced to, but still thinks they are stupid. 😢
