Dina's and Peter's MAGIC(al) second - January 2022 5 night MDAS

Sunday, January 16 - Miami Beach continued

As we were enjoying our dessert, and the rain slowed from a downpour to a shower, we noticed a bit of a bustle around us. Quite a few of the other diners were first perking up to look in one (southeasterly) direction, and then jumping out of their seats with excitement. Over Peter's right shoulder, a celebrity was approaching. Russell Simmons! Many were rushing over to take selfies with him, but we didn't take any pics. Peter did approach him and tell him how much he admired him, and Mr. Simmons was quite gracious and kind to Peter and to everyone else, from all we could tell.

More to come...

He could not have been more gracious. Posed for multiple photos, especially with the kids who clearly saw him as a role model. It's great to see such a self-made success give his private time so willingly to future generations. Just a class act through and through.

Monday, January 17, 2022 - Embarkation Day (AKA The Day We Have All Been Waiting For)

We had set the alarm for 7am so we could shower and last-minute pack AND have breakfast in a leisurely manner. We figured we'd leave for the port by 9:45 for our 10:30 PAT (port arrival time). It helped that it was MLK Day, so there wouldn't be typical rush hour traffic.

We woke up before the alarm went off. Peter did because he just wakes up early, and I did because my sleep was very restless and was looking at the clock probably every half hour. The housekeeper hadn't left us coffee the new coffee supplies the previous day, so I went down to the front desk to request some. Enough for 1 cup each was delivered pretty much immediately, so we went through the process of making coffee over the toilet as we showered and dressed and packed.

By 8 we were all packed and ready to go, and we left our stuff in the room to run a few blocks south to Crema for breakfast. We had two black coffees, and I ordered the croissant breakfast sandwich.
miami22.jpg

Peter went for a Greek omelette with spinach and feta and sliced multigrain bread. It was supposed to come with strawbery jam but they forgot to give it to him and he forgot to ask for it.
miami23.jpg

We were pretty stressed out this morning. We both felt pretty great, but we really wanted to get on that ship, and there was a chance, a low chance but not zero chance, that we wouldn't be able to board. I reassuring Peter we'd be fine; we'd been careful, we felt well, we tested negative at home...but I knew we could still test positive. I kept reassuring him (and myself) that odds were in our favor.

We went up to the room, summoned the Lyft and walked outside with our stuff. This was aroun 9:45. I texted the Circa39 staff that we had checked out. The Lyft driver was just a few minutes away. At 9:48, he pulled up...to the hotel across the street. We waved to the valet who alerted the driver he was in the wrong spot. The problem was there was all this construction on Collins, and when the driver drove off to go around the block, he had to go way out of his way to come back to us. It would have been much faster for us to just cross the street (though a little difficult with the construction barriers), and we were getting edgy and impatient, but it all worked out fine. We were in the car by around 9:56. There was little traffic and soon we saw this beautiful sight:

20220117_101532.jpg

We were out of the car by 10:17 and in the line for the 10:30 PAT. On check-in night 30 days prior, I had been on-line with the FB group and EVERYONE who wanted the first possible PAT seemed to get 10:30. I think there was a glitch in the system. The people with the scanners even made a comments at how big the 10:30 group was.

miami24.jpg

20220117_103721.jpg

Once we entered the building and were about to walk through the x-ray, we got pulled aside because of my answering "yes" to one of the health screening questions. I had read the question a bunch of times. I'm pretty sure it was something like "In the last 14 days, have you been exposed to, or have you cared for, anyone with Covid-19?" So yeah...I'm a nurse working in a hospital. Yes, I have cared for someone! I was in full PPE so I wasn't technically exposed. Caring for someone and exposure are two different things, and it was a terrible question! But I had to say yes and this delayed our boarding. First a nurse and then a doctor came out and spoke to me, meanwhile, we watched hundreds? of people pass us in the line.

When the interrogation was finally over (in reality it probably only cost us 7 minutes but it felt like an hour because it was stressful), I thought that they should have escorted us directly to a tent for testing. Instead we had to get on the end of the line, which took another 15 minutes or so of winding through the pre-testing area. We turned in our tests at 11:13 and headed to the terminal waiting area. This sign pictured below was at the bottom of the escalator that led up to the terminal/waiting area where passengers waited for results.

miami25.jpg

Top of the escalator:
20220117_111832.jpg

I wish we had taken photos here, as I know everyone is interested. We were too nervous! Neither of us even thought about taking pictures. There were already a lot of people waiting ahead of us. We watched the board even though we knew it would be about 45 minutes before we'd know. The board has reservation numbers columns next to "Proceed to" columns and the "proceed to column" has either "terminal" or "Inspire agent." Results came up in batches. There were maybe 4 batches that we waited through before our turn was up. I imagine that if we hadn't had the interrogation, we would have been in an earlier batch. We kept watching the board and I was refreshing my e-mail, and before our reservation number appeared on the board, I got an e-mail that our results were ready. Checked the Inspire website and saw this at 11:55...We were "cleared to sail!"

miami26.jpg

Guys...I CRIED! I shook and cried with relief and Peter laughed at me and also with his own glee.
We didn't wait to see our reservation on the board, we just headed straight to check-in and boarded the ship! It was as we headed up the walkway to the ship that I remembered to take the above screen shot, so the crying only lasted about 2 minutes.

Up next...on the ship!

Here is a photo journey of our gleeful embarking on the beautiful Disney Magic

(We actually got pulled over 1 more time as we were heading up to the ship. I lost count of how many times they scanned our PAT form, but it was a LOT of times, and just before we headed up the plank, we were again asked to stop, and our name was placed on a list...maybe about a 1 minute pause. I was wondering if this had to do with the fact that we got an e-mail that we were cleared but it hadn't communicated yet with the reservation system? IDK...but thankfully it was a qucik stop, and soon we were finally, REALLY clear...

I had been expecting to see Mickey AND Minnie at the welcome show, but we only had Mickey. This made me a little nervous that perhaps we'd see few characters during this cruise. My fear would soon be assuaged! I think the videos I'd seen of both characters at the welcome show were from the bigger ships?

magic01.jpg

We were led through Fathoms to have a group tutorial on how to use the app onboard. We came in after it had begun and it seemed to go way too fast for me to get anything out of it! In fact I had a hard time with the app during the whole cruise and had to go a bunch of times to guest services for assistance.

Next we went straight to our assembly station (S we think this was near the Walt Disney Theater?) and after we had done the thing we needed to do there (something with the app) we headed up to Cabanas for lunch.

Next post, all about lunch

We were most looking forward to this station, which was just as good as ever
20220117_143248.jpg

20220117_123010.jpg

I also got a lamb chop and some salmon. The lamb was good (just a little dry), the salmon was GREAT
20220117_123007.jpg

Peter took some carrot cake, which was good
cabanas01.jpg

The coffee is still gross, seriously...it's not drinkable
20220117_122749.jpg

So that was it for Cabanas, but this is embarkation day, and we still had hours before our stateroom would be ready (3pm), AND we had to get the taste of that horrible coffee out of our mouths!

So...

We went out and grabbed some lamb/beef shwarma. This was fine but not great, a nice option to have on a ship
cabanas02.jpg

And then we needed a second dessert! I'm vanilla, Peter is chocolate
20220117_140318.jpg

And a drink of the day, a Bahama Mama, in a souvenir glass
20220117_134847.jpg

This is the life! We couldn't be happier.

Up next, more embarkation glee.

I totally hear you in the joy of getting that cleared to sail! When we went we had two staterooms my wife and girls in one and me and my boys in the other. My stateroom cleared first and my wife’s didn’t clear until the next batch. Because we were in separate rooms we had to test in separate tents and our samples ended up in different batches. Made us even more nervous something was wrong and even happier when we were all cleared.

Love the report! This cruise itinerary/MDAS was our first cruise and I’m excited to hear how it was now that cruising has changed just a bit.

will add we were on the Wonder, smaller ship and got both Mickey and Minnie for the welcome so I’m guessing you boarded as they were cycling through breaks.

This statement is, literally, the best embodiment of the phrase "to put it mildly".

This was my #1 bone of contention with a division of a company that is supposed to be on the forefront of technology.

Disney Cruise Lines Internet is abysmal. It is an ancient version and an atrocity to inflict upon its clients. As part of one of the largest media companies in the world, it should be an embarrassment to them. And the Navigator app is a horror.

If you are directing your customers to a location for a class on how to use your app and how to log on to your Internet IMMEDIATELY after they board -- one that is staffed by multiple trouble shooters -- then you are clearly aware that your product has many problems.

Also, to sell Internet usage by the MB is a business model based on a technology that is dated by a good decade. And to make logging in and out of that usage ability so complicated......it's unforgivable. Besides the fact that you're making the #1 benefit of technology -- connectivity -- a problem for your customers, you are robbing yourself of so much free marketing as said customers could post all trip long about how much fun they're having on said cruise. Most importantly, as a caregiver with Power of Attorney for an aging parent and as a sole owner of a small business, you did not add to my relaxation by robbing me of my easy and consistent connection to manage those things; a connection that I have experienced on other cruises at a fraction of the cost.

On top of that, the Navigator app is a nightmare. I had to sign in multiple times a day to stay connected. And since everything was on the app (no more printed Navigators available to check and plan (and then just leave on the desk in my stateroom for easy reference) for what cool stuff I could do), this meant I sometimes missed things I had enjoyed on the last cruise when I had planned for them from viewing and keeping my weekly Navigator handy, and then checked on my daily one. You know, those paper Navigators don't drain my battery, and they don't log me out of them.

I had a great cruise. It could have been even better if you simply delivered the connectivity we all expect and need in our daily lives, and gave me an option to have a printed copy of what was available. But you didn't. And, in my conversations with multiple cast members, you clearly know how much of a problem it is.

Hilarious.

DCL Cabanas coffee is the equivalent of drinking "Beverly" in Epcot. It's a dare, not a beverage. And I have had some atrocious firehouse coffee in my time.

Thankfully, Cove Cafe was a beacon of caffeinated joy. So many delicious choices, and a great little spot to just relax.

What was even more amazing was that at our brunch in Palo, I had questions about the source of that coffee, and when I asked our waiter if their coffee was brewed or simply a concentrate like Cabanas, his very-clearly safe reply was "We manage our machines here very carefully." Not "We brew our own coffee." Spolier alert: It was better than Cabanas, but it is still concentrate.

Thanks so much for following my report and for the encouragement. People don't comment as much these days as in the past so it means a lot when someone does!

It must have been torturous to have to wait for a second batch for your wife and girls to clear! I can totally see whey you thought there was a problem. In retrospect, it makes total sense, but in that moment when your anxiety is piqued, it's rough!

We chose this cruise in part for the MDAS. We can do any cruise on a different line for a lot less money, so for our Disney cruises, we want them to have something uniquely special about them. We had done SWDAS on the Fantasy and missed CC due to weather, so the Magic with MDAS seemed a logical progression. We were initially supposed to stop in Key West, but it was changed several months out to a double dip, which ultimately worked out great, since CC was a high priority (to judge for ourselves if it was worth the hype). Spoiler - MDAS did NOT disappoint! In fact, we were blown away!

Yeah, I'd like to think Minnie was just using the powder room. I can relate to that. It neer occurred to us not go back through the atrium and spy on other groups' welcome shows. We heard them from a distance for hours, but it would have been better for the sake of curiosity to go see what was happening.

Please stay tuned!

:rolleyes1We had a great cruise...an awesome time. There was an incident with somebody's shoes...

But your assessment is ironically hilarious because of its absolute truth!

DCL can definitely do better. I keep saying this, I'm sounding like a broken record. For what we pay, we should get a decent...I'm just asking for a potable...cup of coffee.

Monday, January 17, 2022 - Embarkation Day continued

It's only fair that after a well-deserved excoriating of DCL's included coffee, I now bestow equally merited praise upon the metaphorical ambrosia from Cove Cafe!

We still had about half an hour to kill before the stateroom would be ready. (There was a rope and sign across the hallway in deck 7 on the starboard side that rooms would be ready at 3pm. Port side rooms were ready at 1:30). So we decided to go hang out in and around one of our favorite venues on the DCL ships.

20220117_142328.jpg

We just LOVE the vibe in here, and honestly, if I could sit in here hours and hours each day with a book and a beverage, I would consider that a wonderful, relaxing vacation. I'm not complaining that DCL offers so much more, but Cove Cafe is a slice of heaven on the sea. The aroma in here is joyously intoxicating for a coffee lover!

We didn't even order anything in here at this particular time. We were already stuffed from 2 lunches, 2 desserts and a sweet cocktail. While I was really tempted to order a heavenly coffee-forward cocktail, we did have some unpacking to do before our 4pm champagne tasting, so we decided to just drink the atmosphere for now. And so we did!

Spoiler alert: We would drink plenty of coffee from Cove Cafe later on the cruise (no coffe cocktails), and it was just as delectable as that from Cabanas is unpotable. Though we still regret to have to pay for it out of principle, it is definitely worth the upcharge. And there is a frequent buyers card available and you get a free one after purchasing 5.

My advice is to save space, or at least some time, for Cove Cafe on your Disney Cruise.

Next post, our stateroom is ready!

We were intrigued by videos/photos we had seen of the "Navigator's Verandah" on the Magic and Wonder, so we booked this category to give it a try for ourselves. This is a category 7A, and is different on the smaller ships than on the larger, from what I understand. It has a verandah that is enclosed with a porthole-shaped opening. On the larger ships, I believe it's just a slightly obstructed verandah. I welcome those with more experience with this category to clarify or correct my understanding if I'm not accurate.

Our stateroom was pretty far aft on deck 7. It was the second cat. 7A (as you move forward to aft), on the starboard side.

The key/ID cards used to be given out at the port, but are now on the fish extenders outside the stateroom door. We came to the room at 3pm sharp. Our luggage was already there, but I didn't take a photo of that.

Here's a cute little magnet that reminds us why the room wasn't ready for us until 3 o'clock
magicstateroom03.jpg

I know most DCL vets are totally over the sling-back bags, but for us, this gift is kind of a big deal. I confess I was hoping against most that DCL would keep gifting these until after our first Silver voyage. Yay for us!
magicstateroom04.jpg

I still love the classic styling and nautical theme of the DCL staterooms. My only slight peeve was the very narrow passage between the bed and the dresser/wall (right side of the photo below). Peter and I could not pass each other in that space or be there at the same time.

Weirdly, I didn't take any pics of the hallway with the closet and bathroom doors. Sorry. Next post baths and balcony.

Monday, January 17, 2022 - Embarkation continued

DCL is famous for its split bathroom set-up, which we love!

There's one room with a toilet and sink. (note large liquid hand soap)
magicstateroom11.jpg

And another room with a sink and shower/bath. (note large body lotion and bar soap)
magicstateroom09.jpg

magicstateroom10.jpg

I have to say that this shower was amazing for being on a ship. The water pressure was perfect and it always got steaming hot, exactly how I love it, immediately. I'm so sorry that I didn't take a picture of the inside of the shower so you could see the products. I know you want to know about the products, and I acknowledge this was a huge fail on my part, one that will not be repeated! There were 3 large pump bottles with H2O body wash, shampoo or conditioner.

The verandah was so cute!

This pic below is of the right wall of the verandah as you look our from the room. You can see in this photo that there is a space in the wall between this verandah and the one to the right, making the space a little less closed in and private than we expected it to be.
magicstateroom16.jpg

We got settled into the room and unpacked. We also met our stateroom attendant, who later was switched to a different stateroom assignment and we got a new person. First we had a woman, whose name escapes both of us. I checked my journal to see if I had written it down, but no. She was great and so was our new man I. Gede I think. They together explained that because of the low number of passengers, they were told they had to "share."

After unpacking, we were getting toward 4pm, time for our Champagne Tasting! But first, we had time to put the finishing touches on the stateroom.

There are two things, IMHO, that set Disney Cruise Line apart: Exceptional Customer Service, and the little flourishes (like this lamp shade and the nautical devices on the verandah). It's the difference, for me between a moving hotel and a sea cruise journey.

I loved that there were people who actually pin traded from our door. I like to think it made it a little more like a Disney vacation for those who did. Someone even left us an extra pin as a present. I carried a handful of extra pins around with me, but didn't see any CMs with lanyards or pin trading stations at the various stores.

I should also remark that most passengers who were wearing pin lanyards were also not trading. Their lanyards were beautiful accessories just the same!

Monday, January 17, 2022 - Embarkation Day, Champagne Tasting

Peter and I had had such a great time at our Tequila and Margarita Tasting on the Fantasy, that as soon as we paid in full for this cruise, I was on-line shopping for some tastings!

I saw this Champagne Tasting for 4pm on Embarkation Day, and my first thought was "what a wonderful way to sail away, with a champagne toast!" But then I started to worry about "missing" sail-away. While I knew there would be no celebration deck party, we still enjoy being outside and up top during sail-away. Then I saw that our "All Aboard" time was 4pm, so I figured it was likely that sail-away would be later, and if we would miss any of it, it would only be the very beginning. I also wasn't even sure where the Champagne Tasting would take place; I thought perhaps it would be at Signals or somehow adjusted so it could be outside for sailaway.

Well, when we boarded and logged into the app, we discovered that it would be in Keys.

Here's Peter making sure his hands are nice and clean for Champagne Tasting.
champagne01.jpg

I want to point out that this tasting was on the app as an event that was happening, and though it was sold out on the app prior to boarding, I believe that slots opened up and people showed up at the last minute.

Keys is such a lovely, calming venue, we were looking forward to perhaps spending more time here in the evenings.
20220117_160255.jpg

Glasses had already been poured so we made our way to a table for 2.
20220117_155927.jpg

champagne09.jpg

There were 4 glasses pre-set at each place, and one that would be delivered later.

There were four bottles set out on the bar so we could see our selections

Our host was Matija, the head sommelier on the ship.
champagne06.jpg

champagne07.jpg

He was wonderful! Very knowledgeable, answered all questions with patience and grace. I believe the enjoyment of the tastings very host-dependent and has very little to do with what you're actually tasting. Well, wait, not very little to do with what you're tasting, but MORE to do with the personality and knowledge of the host. There was nothing special or unique about any of the champagnes, we were very familiar the first four of them (with the last one, Moet & Chandon Ice Imperial being the only one we had never tried) but it was a great experience because our host was amazing! There's nothing like a toast with like-minded people to kick off a cruise.

champagne08.jpg

This photo taken after the Ice Imperial bottle was added. This champagne is made to be served very cold and over ice, so they poured it at the last minute.
20220117_165246.jpg

Champagne is delicious; we've never had one we actively dislike. Our least favorite of these 5 was the Moet & Chandon Brut. Veuve Clicquot is our usual choice, and we really enjoy the Tattinger as well. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the Ice Imperial!

That was 5 pretty generous tastes of champagne for $38 per person, plus the entertainment value; we thought it was a great deal.

Somewhere in the middle of the tasting, we had the safety drill...right there in Keys, drinking our champagne. It only took a few minutes. We drank champagne, instead of having to go to our muster stations with the crowds and wait for everyone to show up. It was much better/easier this way! When the drill was over, we were still in our comfy chairs, enjoying more champagne!

When we were finished making 5 toasts, it was 5pm, and we headed to decks 9/10 for sail-away!

Yes, and no pin trading on other cruise lines, either! <3

I am loving your post! I too am a nurse and our stories the last 2 years sound very similar. I also live in St Louis, Go Billikens (LOL:) We leave on Saturday on the 5 night double dip cruise. It is my 7th grade daughter and I, cannot wait! please keep your review going, it has been awesome!

Has DCL always done Champagne tastings on embarkation day I wonder? I don’t drink but if I did seems like an excellent way to kick off a cruise especially right now when the large deck party is out.

I know trip reports take time but definitely enjoying your writing style so keep it coming as you have time. I’m using it to make it through until our next cruise end of April. 😀We are getting close enough to be excited and think about it but far enough it still feels like forever.
