Disney vs. Voyager of the Seas

I did a cruise on Disney Magic in May of 2000, then on the Wonder in May of 2001, and now I just returned from RCCL’s Voyager of the Seas which sailed May 4th, 2003.

I loved both my Disney cruises, but found the cruise on Voyager of the Seas to be even better than my two Disney cruises. Below are the comparisons I have drawn between the different ships.

Disney Magic/Wonder vs. Voyager of the Seas

Embarkation
The embarkation for Disney was great. The one for Voyager was awful. With Disney we were inside the air conditioned terminal the entire time. When we were boarding Voyager we had to wait outside in the Miami heat for 45 minutes before we even got into the terminal. With Disney we could let the kids sit and watch cartoons while waiting. With RCCL we had to stay together in long lines for almost an hour. With Disney, we were announced, “We Welcome the Parker family from Utah onboard”
With Voyager, a generic Welcome Omboard. With Disney the characters entertained the kids while waiting. If my cruise had ended here, Disney would have been the better cruise.

Stateroom
On both ships we had a balcony cabin. I found both Disney and Voyager had comparable staterooms. The things I liked better on Voyager were, NO SHOWER CURTAIN, they had wonderful shower doors, more closet space, my big suitcase fit under the bed., Voyager has a 19” tv, Disney had a smaller one. The balcony appeared bigger to me on Voyager than on the Magic and the Wonder. What I liked better with Disney was the 2 bathrooms. I also did like the privacy curtain better with Disney since it covered the whole room. The one on Voyager was a very small privacy curtain.

Stateroom Attendant
What can I say. These people are the friendliest, hardest working people we have the pleasure to meet. They go out of their way and are wonderful. On Voyager we had Leonardo, and he was great.

MY opinion, not necessarily yours, of the ship’s beauty
I think the Disney Magic is the most beautiful ship I have ever been on. Voyager comes in 2nd, and Disney Wonder third. I just love the décor on the Magic. Voyagers promenade is wonderful too, but the Magic is outstanding.

Kids Pool
This is where I decided I won’t go back to Disney. I don’t do well sitting in the hot sun, and was only able to stand 1 hour a day at the Mickey pool. My daughter would have loved to stay longer, but it got to hot in the burning sun for me. I liked the fresh water pool, but the Mickey pool was also very crowded. On the Voyager, the kids pool was in the shade. I sat for hours every day watching my daughter swim. I could have sat there all day, it was very pleasant. There were plenty of chairs, lot’s of shade, a slide for little kids, and a slide for bigger kids. The only drawback is the saltwater, but my daughter didn’t care. The kids pools on Voyager were also less crowded than the Mickey pool. I was comfortable, my daughter was happy, it was a win win.

Buffets
I thought the food on Disney and RCCL was comparable. I thought the buffet on Disney had more selections than on RCCL. The exception was a night when they had the same food as in the dining rooms, which was nice if you wanted to dine casually.

RoomService
On the Disney ships, the food never changed, always the same items. On the Voyager they offered a different menu every night. The service was comparable, quick and friendly, but the variation in food on the Voyager really sold me.

Dining Rooms
This is MY OPINION, not necessarily yours. I loved the gorgeous 3 story dining room on Voyager. I liked being at the same table every night. Our servers, Robert and Maria were exceptional. I had much better service than on Disney. Our head waiter, Ashton, was fantastic. On Disney I spent a lot of time waiting for my Diet Coke refill, on Voyager I hadn’t even finished my glass before the next one arrived. Robert served my kids at a faster pace than the adults, so they were never just sitting there waiting. Robert and Maria and Ashton were friendly, wonderful, just the best.

Service at Lunch and Breakfast
The servers that handed out the utensils at the Windjammer learned my daughters name the first day. After that, she was always greeted by name by 5 or 6 staff as we headed into the buffet, and this is on a ship with 3000+ passengers. Drinks were brought to our table constantly. The servers stopped and chatted, and taught my daughter a ton of magic tricks. I really appreciated the service we got at the Windjammer knowing the servers were not getting a tip from us. They were wonderful. On Disney I never had this service at the buffet.

The Spa
I had a massage onboard Magic and also on the Wonder. They were great, and did not push products on me. I had a pedicure onboard the Voyager, again they were great and did not push products on me. I think the spa’s were comparable. Unfortunately on Disney the spa is below the basketball court, so it was noisier on Disney.

Food availability
I really appreciated the Voyager having the Promenade Café. I could always get something to snack on whenever I was hungry. On Disney there were times Room Service was the only option.

Kids Clubs
My 5 year old daughter, 12 year old son, and 13 year old son, all said they preferred Voyagers kids program. If an activity was in the compass, the activity was done. Quite often on Disney we would see an activity listed, and it ended up not happening. There was more individual attention given to the kids, since there were less kids than on Disney. My daughter loved the pirate parade, the space aliens, the pillowcase makings etc. She did not miss the Disney characters at all. I thought the kids clubs on Disney looked better than on Voyager, but my kids didn’t care about how things looked, they cared about the activities, and they loved it.

Johnny Rocket
Johnny Rocket was great. My teens loved it and spent a lot of time there. This was not an option on Disney.

Tendering
I loved Disney’s ship’s because we never had to tender. I hated having to tender at Labadee and Cayman Islands on the Voyager.

Adults Only Areas
I loved the hot tubs in the solarium on the Voyager. They could easily seat 20 people each. They were never full, and I really enjoyed them. Also enjoyed the padded lounge chairs in this area. The solarium area is very pretty, and has a great pool. The Disney adult area was ok.

Casino
I enjoyed waisting $20 on the video poker machines. I usually gamble in Vegas, so I thought the payout schedule on the Voyager was pretty bad. Disney does not have a casino, so I did enjoy having one on Voyager.

Bingo
Ok, tell me why Joey Fontaine from the group N’Sync should win the jackpot? Can you believe he won it on our cruise. He was really excited about winning though. I didn’t win anything on bingo either on Disney or Voyager. It was fun participating though.

Private Island
I enjoyed both Castaway Cay with Disney, as well as Labadee with Voyager. The best part about Castaway Cay was no tendering. There were also nice showers right at the dock to get the sand off your feet. On Labadee I enjoyed shopping and barganing. If I had my choice though, I prefer Castaway Cay.

Shows
The ice show on Voyager was fantastic. I also loved Dreamscapes, which reminded me of Circque De Soleil (excuse my spelling). The shows on the Voyager was not really for kids though, so Disney did better with Kids shows. I also loved the show on Disney done by the kids at the end of the cruise. The Love and Marriage show on Voyager was hilarious though. It was one of the funniest things I ever saw.

Debarkation
RCCL, please learn from Disney. Disney is much quicker and better organized.

Conclusion
I don’t think you can go wrong cruising on either one of these ships. I give the edge to RCCL because my kids preferred it, and because of the shaded kids pool area. People who love the sun may prefer Disney. All 3 of my cruises were fantastic, and I would not hesitate to go on either one of them again.

Rita,

Thanks for the detailed, fairly presented comparison. I think a lot of people are looking for information just like this :)

Good morning, Rita.

With Voyager, a generic Welcome Omboard.

I have only been on the Disney Western cruise. The Eastern Caribbean doesn't interest me. Nor does the Voyager's Eastern Religious cruise...

it is great to read your report , if we had to choose wwe would pick either RCCL or Disney ........
we maybe going on the Brand new ship from RCCL that is coming out in AUG. besides the Transatlantic crossing this will
be the first cruise for the ship... and it is out of boston
so no airfare ..... goes to Canada ..... we just would like to be on the ship
www.vacationoutlet.com to see pictures of new ship

I was SO happy to see your post! Having only been on one cruise - a 7 nighter on Disney, I've been hesitant to try RCCL... now I definitely will. I was just SO afraid that nothing would compare to the "Magic" of Disney.

One question tho - does the spa on VOS have anything like the heated tile lounge chairs on the Magic?

I'm curious to find out if the Voyager has as many daily family games and trivia contests. My family spends their day going from one activity to another. We do all of these together because the kids are older and they don't really attend many planned teen activities. Also, are the shows at night for all ages like the main shows on Disney ships. We are not much for laying in the sun so activities and shows are very important to us.

We were seriously conemplating sailing on the navigator of the Seas, another of the Voyager class ships...however, we found out that there is no nursery for our DS, 2, only stateroom 1 on 1 babysitting. Unfortunately, that was enough to forego a trip on that ship until DS is old enough to go to the regular childrens programming...

I'm so glad to see your report about the Voyager of the Seas since we are going August 17!! As with any of the "mega ships" I do expect debarkation to be a problem since the VOS has a passenger capacity of 3,300 vs. Disney's passenger capacity of 2,400 and these numbers don't include the crew!!

Thedisneymom: I think most older kids would really like the Ice Skating show, and some would like DreamScapes. There is a family talent show which was a lot of fun, and you can ice skate together as a family as well as roller blade and rock climb together. There were more family together activities on Disney, but it did not bother us, since our kids wanted to do their club activities. I only saw my teens for excursions and dinners.

TootyJane: Try to get to the terminal before noon. I don't care what the documentation says, get their early and you will be able to get on quicker. I would try for 11am. I hope your cruise is as wonderful as ours was.

Candleonwater: I did not see any tile chairs like Disney has, but instead I think you would really enjoy the lush and beautiful surroundings in the adult only solarium. I felt so decadent sitting in the hot tub on a star lit night in the middle of the ocean.
Also if you have a spa treatment you don't have to listen to the constant pounding of the basketball's like you do on Disney.

I forgot to mention, I think there is more movement on the Disney Ships than on the Voyager class. I do not have any of the after effects of movement now that I am on ground again. My sense of balance suffered for a week after being on Disney. Not enough to be uncomfortable, but enough to mention.

I don't think you can go wrong with either Disney or RCCL Voyager class ships. They are beautiful, they cater to your needs, and I can't wait for my next trip. Hopefully we will go on RCCL Navigator or Adventure.

Rita...Thanks so much for such an in depth report, it was really appreciated and enjoyed.

Thx
Joanna

We have seriously thought about going on RCCL Navigator of the Seas and actually almost booked instead of DCL BUT the only draw back for us is that we hate to drive to Miami- it is 11 or 12 hours away for us. I am spoiled by driving 7 hours and being home before dark on the day we get back into port! Do you think that RCCL would consider moving 1 of these ships to Port Canaveral for me?!!!!
:jester:

i think that they do have a ship out of Port Canaveral called Soverign of the Seas. It offers three and four day cruises.

We too have been thinking of trying the Voyager since I have older teens now. Do you have to pay for the extra activities like Ice skating, rollerblading, etc or is it now free? How was the movie selection on the Voyager and what did you teens end up doing the most? Just hanging out or activities.

Rollerblading, Ice Skating, Rock Climbing etc. was all free. It was no problem getting ice skates etc. The only thing is: WEAR LONG PANTS if you want to ice skate. They will not let you ice skate unless you have socks and long pants. I knew about this before we left, so we all brought long pants, but there were many that had to go back to their stateroom to change.

OK, this one I will give Disney better score on. We all missed the Buena Vista theater and the first run movies on Disney. My son loved to go to the movies, and he missed it. The movies on the tv last week were older, like Oceans 11. I don't remember the other ones since I didn't watch any of them. I wish the voyager class ships had a movie theater and showed first run movies, but RCCL does not own ABC.

My teens did 1/2 of the activities, and 1/2 the time they hung out at Optix. They went ice skating together as a group. They got to go to the Casino and play with fake money as an activity. (Not sure if I like my kids being trained to gamble, but they had fun). They had a rock climbing activity. They did a treasure hunt. They did stuff all the time. Some evenings I saw them in and out of Johnny Rockets. We would be on an excursion and my kids saw some of the other teens and would all yell, see you at Optix tonight. They had a great time.

My 5 year old daughters favorites were the Pirate treasure hunt and Pirate parade, as well as space aliens. During the treasure hunt they met the captain and got "gold" from him. They went to the pursers desk and got treasure there. They had a break at the ice cream machines for a snack, they went to the theater on their parade. They got to go to the "adult only" areas and hunt for treasure. They had a total blast. They had them painted as pirates with face paint, they got bandanas, and they had their portraits taken like that. They went to some of the restaurants and the servers gave them snacks and more treasures. My daughter still talks about it.

sounds great Rita! My teens would love it....I'm surprised they did not have a movie theater. I assumed every ship did I guess. How many in your family. We are family of 5 and just wondering how much cheaper the Voyager is compared to DCL. We are on the west coast so still have to travel far no matter which cruise we choose but may do the Voyager next year since we're already booked on the Western for this July. We had already told ourselves anyway that this 3rd one was if for us w/ Disney...it's too expensive to keep doing w/ 5 people!

There were 5 of us. My friend Cassie, Myself, my 13 year old son Ryan, my 12 year old foster son Jordan and my 5 year old daughter Ashley. Being a single mom, I usually try to travel with one of my friends so I have an adult to talk to at dinner.

This cruise did cost us less than on Disney. We had 2 connecting balcony cabins on deck 9, and probably saved $1000 compared to Disney.

We flew in from Utah, and we flew in to Fort Lauderdale. We rented a car and stayed at the Hyatt which we had pricelined for $30 per night. Did not know that they only valet park for $20 per night, so the car par was almost the same price as our room.

After Cass dropped us off at the port, she took the car back to the National rental agency at the Miami airport. They took her over to Alamo where she had to wait for almost an hour before a shuttle took her to the pier. When we came off the ship, we waited for an hour and no Alamo shuttle ever arrived, we gave up and took a taxi to the Miami airport National rental agency. This was not good. In the future, we will try to fly in to Miami, and just taxi to and from the airport. That is the quickest option.

The nice thing about having a rental car was that we were able to drive to South Beach. We hit the main beach street there and got to see all the cool Art Deco hotels and buildings. It was really fun to see.

I would put in a fair watcher at travelocity.com for flights between your closest airport and Miami. Hopefully you can get a great deal.

Being this far west, one cruise I have been considering is the Golden Princess out of LA. I think that is a 7 day baha cruise, and it looked great. I saw it on the Travel Channel. I can drive from here to LA in 10 hours, and would save a ton on the airfare. We do the drive to LA at least twice a year to go to Disneyland. (yes we are freaks :D)

Since late dining is considered the thing to do on RCCL, we never had a problem getting the early/main seating for dinner. No wait list necessary. We all prefer to eat early, so this was good for us.
On Disney you will get late unless you book eeeaaarlyyy.

Voyager had a great Gala Buffet one night, and a great chocolate buffet on the last night. I couldn't believe I could eat that much at midnight, and it was great. The Ice carvings, fruit carvings, flowers and artistry was fantastic.

RCCL was a lot dressier than Disney. I had rented tuxes for the boys from Tuxedo Warehouse for $50 for each boy. I was so excited about their great cruise special. The boys looked fantastic, and we got a great family portrait taken. The 8x10 portrait was $20 on Voyager. On formal night everybody I saw were dressed to the nines and looked great. It was really fun to be a bit fancy. The ones who did not feel like dressing up could get the exact same food served in the Windjammer.

Great review! We're going to try RCCL when my youngest is around 5 years old. Too young for the clubs now. Thanks for sharing...

Tina

Great job Rita,
I have found that a lot of people are interested in the comparison of DCL and the Voyager-class ships. I have finalized a comparison also, and will be putting it on my web site this weeekend.

I have posted the Compass Activity sheets from the 8/16/02 Explorer of the Seas Western cruise and the 2/15/03 Navigator of the Seas Eastern cruise. Happy reading !!!

We have had the Promenade view rooms on these ships and they are very neat. It is great to watch the nightly parades from your room and people watch ! We too felt that the 24-hr Promenade Cafe was very convenient. Could always get a snack for us or the kids.
