Disneyland FTW Question...

When we were planning our wedding DFTW was not very flexible as to where we could use for our wedding. Obviously things have chnaged as Cryssi was able to have her weding inside DCA (and ahs gorgeous photos I might add), and so have others that I know.

RangerPooh, I'm sorry to hear that they weren't as flexible for you. But I'm happy to hear that things have changed.

As for the hotels your options are the rose court garden at the DLH and the wedding garden at GCH... Unless there are other options that's about it for the hotel ceremony sites.

I have seen those venues in person and they are lovely.

PPH use to have a location next to the pool...

I have stayed at the Paradise Pier Hotel. It sounds like you're talking about the pool deck. That's a nice area for fireworks viewing.

Then there are the ballrooms too for both ceremony and reception.

The ballrooms are lovely but they're too formal for my family. We're kinda free spirits (boy, what an understatement!).

Inside DCA there's the Sun fountain (don't know the name).

I have seen photos of events that were held here. It's a beautiful location.

You can also use the Animation building.

I have seen photos of events that were held here. It's another beautiful location.

We asked about the Wine Country area and they were wishy-washy, but others have used it since.

I have seen photos of events that were held here. It's another lovely location.

Another location that's nice is the central area looking out over the bay (don't know the name) next to the bridge. It's a larger open site, but I don't know if it's ever ben used before.

I'm not sure what area you're talking about. If I can track down a few photos from my last Disneyland vacation, I'll post a link to them and you can tell me if that's the area that you're talking about. I probably won't be able to do this until the weekend, though.

Here is some info I found that might give you some ideas for locations. It lists site capacities, and has a few pictures that might inspire another fabulous event.

Thank you for the link. I hadn't been on that site in a while so it was good for me to review it again. I also poured over the list to see if any of the events that had been passed my way were listed. Sadly, they were not. But had they been, I would have gladly shared a little info. Even though I can't talk about those events, I can talk about the following event since I experienced it myself. ;)

I was a guest at a private event that was held on the Mark Twain Riverboat inside the Disneyland Theme Park. This was an early-morning event that was held prior to the theme park's opening. Buffet stations were set up on the dock, as were various tables and chairs. But the guests grabbed their food and enjoyed it on the boat instead (myself included). A band played as we sailed around on the Rivers of America. It was a very relaxing cruise and a lovely way to start the day. I have one or two photos of this event. If I can find my photos, I'll post them. It was a simple but memorable event.

I need to note that I don't know if the above event is bookable today, but it is something that is worth looking into. I also think it would be very fun as a late-night cruise. That one would appeal to me more, especially since I am not the early-morning type. I'm more the night-owl. ;)

Thanks again, RangerPooh, for all of the information. It definitely was quite useful to me as I begin thinking about what kind of anniversary celebration my husband and I want for our 25th.

ha ha...um, I have yet to do a trip report...:rolleyes1

Cryssi, I'm hanging my head in shame, too, since I never finished either of my FTW trip reports. But I do have a post all set to go that I hope to add to one of them before the month is through. I made myself a promise last month that I would try to finish at least one of them before the year ends. I've got my fingers crossed that I'll be able to pull it off.

I have a vendor review in the DL FAQ sticky above.

I will look for your review. Thank you for the heads-up.

I haven't really heard of anyone having a ceremony other than the RCG or GCH, but receptions, I know that several people use the Animation building, like Keri said. Actually, that's what we wanted to use, but we had too many guests!

I'm sorry to hear that your party was too large for the Animation building. I hope you were able to find another lovely venue.

The ceremony location doesn't concern me too much this time around. For our 20th, that was another story, but WDW's Wedding Pavilion worked out beautifully for us. (We had watched the pavilion being built and knew we would renew our vows there one day.)

What concerns me this time around (that is, if we choose to do something more than a ceremony) is finding a fun & unique dinner venue. Something a little off the beaten path. The more unique it is, the better.

Apparently now, there are even more in-park locations you can use, too. It kind of stinks for us who have already been married, but I guess they are always improving/changing.

But, remember, those who are getting married there now are probably paying more money than you did. Hey, just thought I'd give you a little something to smile about. ;)

I'm glad to hear that things have opened up a bit. Progress is good!

(Although what the earlier brides were able to have was an DL photo session all over the park. They had restricted it to just the castle, then eliminated it altogether).

I don't really know too much about DL's photo packages. I really enjoyed my WDW Magic Kingdom bridal portrait session. I'm sorry to hear that a comparable one does not exist in Disneyland.

Right now Disneyland's Fairy Tale Weddings department is working on creating a set of "cheaper" in-park weddings than the $65,000 Sleeping Beauty's Castle extravaganza.

Lurkyloo, I'm glad to hear that. It's all about supply and demand. And from what you just mentioned, it sounds like the demand for an extravagant in-park wedding isn't what they had hoped it would be.

When I called in July to ask about having a small wedding in New Orleans Square, they told me they were working on an "intimate" in-park wedding package for 20 or 25 people - for a mere $25,000. And that's just the ceremony site fee. The reception, decor, entertainment, food, etc. all costs extra. They seem to think $25,000 is reasonable because it's the site fee for a Magic Kingdom wedding, never mind that WDW will let you have 50 people there.

That's a pretty penny for a site fee. Was this pricing for an early-morning event only, or is an evening event available, too?

It seemed like they hadn't even considered using New Orleans Square until I asked for it - I'm kind of sad, because that's where I really wanted to get married, and now all these other people will get to use my idea!

Think of it this way... You were a trailblazer. :flower3:

I guess there's always a vow renewal...

Yes, old married folks still enjoy romance every now and then. A vow renewal is one way to keep the home fires burning. ;)

I would love to do a Disneyland vow renewal someday! That's where DH and I pretty much rekindled our romance 10 years after we broke up in high school. It holds such special meaning to me...

Here's hoping that they start offering lesser, and I mean LESSER, expensive packages for those kinds of things someday!

Scarlett873, it sounds like a DL vow renewal is in your future. What a sweet story you have.

I hope less expensive packages are available soon, too. The more folks who can have a DL wedding/vow renewal/commitment ceremony, the better -- because it will give us more trip reports to read here on the Dis! ;)

Oh Janet - I am so excited that you are planning again!!! I can't wait to see what you do this time, your events are always awesome!

I am so excited that you are planning again!!! I can't wait to see what you do this time...

Allisonswonderland, you are too kind. And your signature photo just reminded me that a Mad Hatter Tea Party is still something that I would love to do some day. I think it would be an absolute hoot! And from the photos that I saw of your event, I know it would be beyond memorable, ~sigh.~

Okay, I promised that I would dig up a few photos from the private event that I attended on the Mark Twain Riverboat inside the Disneyland Theme Park. Click here to go to my on-line photo album.

For this event, the guests had to meet in the lobby of the Grand Californian Hotel at 4:45 AM (that is where everyone was staying). Yes, you read that right. 4:45 A.M. Disney Cast Members were waiting for us there, and they escorted us to the Downtown Disney monorail station.

Since the theme park was closed to the general public at that early morning hour, security was tight. After we produced our event credentials, we were allowed to enter the monorail station. We walked up to the platform and stood there for several minutes. Everyone was excited about attending the special breakfast event inside Disneyland that morning.

The first monorail didn't leave the station until around 5:30 AM. It felt strange for me to enter the theme park in this manner for a private event, but I must admit that it also felt kinda fun. Whenever I have attended a private event in Walt Disney World, I have either entered on foot or via private transportation that took me directly to the event's venue. I've never arrived via a private monorail ride. It was a first for me, and I'm sure many of the others as well.

When our monorail arrived inside the theme park, Disney Cast Members were waiting for us. They escorted us to the Mark Twain Riverboat dock. The walk took a few minutes, and it felt odd being inside the theme park so early in the morning. The place was empty except for the event attendees and a handful of Cast Members who were preparing the park for the day.

It was 6 AM when we arrived at the riverboat dock. I immediately noticed that tables and chairs had been set up on the dock. I also noticed the buffet tables. They were filled with hot & cold breakfast foods and hot & cold beverages. Disney had set out quite a spread for our event. Everything looked lovely.

The guest list was small. I didn't take a head count but I think there were less than 50 of us that morning. Most of us had met during various private functions that had been held over the prior two days. It was nice for me to see my new friends again, but also a little sad since everyone would soon be parting ways.

I walked around the dock and took a couple of quick photos. My digital camera had been giving me trouble that week and I hoped that I would at least get a couple of decent shots out of it. (I apologize for the shots in my on-line album that are a little blurry.)

I eventually put my camera away and got into the buffet line. It moved quickly. And the food that was laid out on the tables was plentiful. I normally do not eat breakfast and thus had a hard time deciding what to put on my plate. I hate it when everything that I see looks scrumptious. But I made a couple of selections and then got myself a glass of orange juice.

Even though tables and chairs had been set up on the dock for our use, no one wanted to eat there. They wanted to eat onboard the Mark Twain Riverboat. We asked the Cast Members if that was okay and they said that it was. I think just about everyone took their food aboard the boat.

I should mention that while we were standing on the dock, we were being entertained by the Side Street Strutters jazz band (click here). They were playing on the second deck of the riverboat. It was a lovely surprise especially since the band is extremely talented. What a wonderful touch to our event.

Once onboard the riverboat, everyone began enjoying their breakfast. The theme park was especially quiet since it was still closed to the general public. There was only one other event going on that morning, but that event was being held inside the French Market Restaurant in New Orleans Square. Even though I knew those attendees were enjoying their event, I wished they could have been outdoors with us in the fresh air. It really was an absolutely lovely way to begin the day.

Shortly before the Mark Twain pulled away from the dock, the Side Street Strutters came down to the main deck. They took their places at the bow of the boat and soon began entertaining us. The riverboat then slowly pulled away from the dock. We were on our way.

As we began traveling down the Rivers of America, I noticed a photographer along the shoreline. I couldn't tell if he was hired by Disney as an official photographer or if he was a press photographer. He waved hello and I snapped his photo before he could take mine.

As our boat passed in front of the French Market, I could see some guests milling about. They waved hello and we waved back. Then I noticed a few more guests a little further down the shoreline. They were shouting out their greetings and then quickly taking photos of our riverboat. It was like we had our very own paparazzi. It was cute.

Our boat continued traveling along the river at a leisurely pace while the band continued to play at an energetic pace. I was thoroughly enjoying myself and so were the rest of the guests. But as with everything good in life, it was over before we knew it.

As the Mark Twain pulled into the dock, we were greeted by the other event attendees. They waved their hellos and asked us how our cruise had been. We responded in kind. It was nice seeing so many happy Disney fans that early in the morning. It sounded like their event had been just as much fun as ours had been.

When we left the dock, we were handed a special surprise. It was a commemorative scroll that stated the following:

"In joyous celebration of the 50th anniversary of Disneyland Park, this certificate verifies and authenticates that the bearer of this proclamation was in fact present and did add to the Magical Memories set forth on this the Seventeenth Day of July in the Year Two Thousand and Five."

The scroll had been signed by the president of the Disneyland Resort. It was a lovely keepsake.

In closing, I don't know if a cruise such as the one that I attended can be booked by others, but it is something that is definitely worth looking into. It is an extremely unique way to celebrate an auspicious occasion. After all, Disney chose it to help celebrate the official 50th anniversary of their most famous theme park. That's got to tell you something. ;)

Janet,
Back in 2003 when we were planning our wedding there were a bunch of high school students there one night who were there for their prom. I asked them where it was to be held and they said that it was on the Mark Twain. So it is possible. Maybe not for the ceremony itself, but perhaps an after hours reception.

RangerPooh, I asked about using the Mark Twain for a private event two years ago. I was disappointed to learn that it wasn't an option. Of course, later on that year I went on to attend a private event aboard that very same boat -- and you've seen my photos so you know I wasn't just whistling "Dixie." :rolleyes1

I have no idea why I was told that boat couldn't be booked, but when I first started down the private event path with Disneyland, all sorts of doors were slammed in my face. It was quite frustrating. Perhaps someone gave me incorrect information somewhere along the way.

If the Mark Twain Riverboat is indeed an option in the future, I probably would want it for an evening event. My guess is that isn't do-able. After all, Disney uses that boat during the Fantasmic show. I don't know what safety rules are in place for after the Fantasmic show. For example, must the river remain free & clear of all boat traffic for "x" number of minutes or "y" number of hours? A rule like that would probably throw a late-night cruise into the Neverland territory.

I know that in the past, the Liberty Belle Riverboat in Walt Disney World had been available for booking. I remember reading about the Dobo's 50th wedding anniversary celebration. One of their many events was held aboard the Liberty Belle. Their guests took some sort of reception cruise prior to dining inside the Haunted Mansion attraction. It sounded divine.

So, I am hopeful that both riverboats are available for an event. I will inquire about them if I go through with my plans for a FTW vow renewal in either Disneyland or Walt Disney World. It would be nice to know what the options are so that I can share that information with others.

By the way, thank you for sharing your information. It gives me a glimmer of hope. :flower3:

Oh Janet - the Mad Hatter Tea was a total blast, but I kept the characters a suprise from everyone, except my mom, so that was even more fun....I did that with Mickey and Minnie at my wedding too and everyone went absolutely crazy. You should definately have one.

Hi there! Yes, the new wedding packages inside the parks will be held in the early mornings prior to park opening. Better start resetting your internal clock now :rotfl:

Allisonswonderland, I love the idea of keeping the "theme" of the party a surprise. That is what I did with my FTW Welcome Party. I also kept, believe it or not , the carved pumpkin a surprise from my husband. How in the heck did I do that, especially since my Event Manager had requested a recent photo of the two of us for the culinary artist? I honestly can't remember right now -- I think I need to read my old trip report!! But I do remember handing the camera to one of my kids while we were heading to our car. I don't remember the flimsy excuse that I gave to my husband for that photo. What I do remember, though, is that he bought whatever my story was hook, line, & sinker -- just like I knew he would (after 20 years of marriage, he was pretty easy to predict!).

Here is the photo that was snapped:

And on the night of our Welcome Party, here is what my husband saw:

It really went over really well with everyone and I'm so glad that I had kept my husband in the dark. *insert evil laughter here*

You should definately have one.

I would really love to have a Mad Hatter Tea Party. Your photos were lovely (and I remember another bride who had a Mad Hatter Tea Party -- her photos were equally as lovely). It looked like such a fun event. And this evening I actually was uploading some photos that my daughter had taken during her last visit to the Grand Floridian's Wonderland Tea Party: click here. She had quite a few photos of the Mad Hatter -- way more than she had of Alice in Wonderland. I think you can say that my daughter loves the boys. ;) I'm hopeful that we'll have a Mad Hatter Tea Party like yours in our future one day.

Lurkyloo, I am sorry to hear that. I am so NOT a morning person. My husband is, though, so perhaps I could hire a stand-in for me. I wonder how much Sleeping Beauty would cost that morning? Oh, strike that. I'd have to hire Cinderella. The only Sleeping Beauty in my husband's life is me -- and I'll be snoring away inside our hotel room at that early morning hour. :lmao:

I guess if we choose to renew our 25th anniversary vows in Disneyland, we're going to have to find another option for the ceremony. I know that the Tower of Terror in Walt Disney World had a wedding ceremony quite a few years ago. I think it was for Valentine's Day. And I think the couple "took the plunge" for their ceremony (but I seem to remember them having a "real" ceremony elsewhere earlier that day). I'm not sure if it's been done at Disneyland/CA Adventure yet, and I'm not sure we'd go that far, but for 25 years, I'm thinking we might need something kinda unique. When you start racking up the years, one anniversary seems to melt into another. Only our 19th & 20th anniversaries stand out. For our 19th, we dined on the set of "The Haunted Mansion" movie; and for our 20th, we dined inside the Great Movie Ride. How in the heck do we top that? Or should we just say "forget it" and order a Happy Meal at the local McDonald's and call it a day? I'm starting to think that might not be a bad option. ;)

Janet I can just picture you having your party on the Mark Twain. If it's possible it would be a fantastic evening setting.

I loved reading and seeing the pictures from your party at the GMR. Thats my dream if we do a VR at Disney.

There was someone else who did a VR with a Mad Hatter tea party that looked amazing - they really went all out. If I had unlimited funds, I think I would love to do that either as a welcome party or as a farewell brunch. Does anybody remember those pix?

D&R love Disney, I think it would be a lot of fun, too. If the riverboat is available, I will add it to my list of venues to consider.

I loved reading and seeing the pictures from your party at the GMR. Thats my dream if we do a VR at Disney.

I hope you have a vow renewal in WDW or DL. I think it's the perfect location for celebrating a wedding anniversary. But, of course, I am partial, so perhaps you shouldn't take my word for that. ;)

As to the Great Movie Ride venue, it really was an awful lot of fun. One of these days I hope to share video of it. Disney's Streetmosphere characters were a hoot & a half. I crack up every time I think about how much ambience they added to the event.

There was someone else who did a VR with a Mad Hatter tea party that looked amazing...

Lisacope, I've seen lovely photos of the tea party from a few Dis'ers (UnderTheMistletoe, Allisonswonderland, etc.). I agree – their parties looked wonderful, ~sigh.~

I have also seen photos from a Mad Hatter Tea Party that was held in Disneyland. This party was thrown by Disney for the Wedding Industry. I don’t believe there was one bell or whistle that wasn’t used. What kills me is that photos from this event never made their way onto Disneyland’s official Fairy Tale Weddings website. What an absolute shame. The photos that I saw were of a beautifully laid-out dining table. The chairs surrounding that table were happily mismatched. And overhead were strung colorful, paper lanterns. The venue was outdoors on the lawn (Grand Californian??) and it looked quite festive.

I also remember seeing photos of a “tea cup” that was used as a prop for photo opportunities. Note: This “tea cup” was similar to the ride vehicles on the theme park attraction, and therefore the guests could sit inside and have their photo taken with a character or two. And as to characters, the following were in attendance: Alice in Wonderland, the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, Tweedledum, and Tweedledee (I think the Queen of Hearts may have been there, too). It truly looked like one helluva of a mad tea party.

I should note that it appears that a couple of photos are on the Disneyland website, but you really have to look to find them. Click here and then click on the slide show link for “Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.” Photos # 19 & # 20 (Great Lawn Reception Table Settings) look like they might be from that event. Also, click here and then click on the slide show link for “Entertainment.” Photo # 15 (Entertain Guests at a Mad Tea Party) and photo # 16 (The Mad Hatter Entertains Guests) might be from that event, too. But it’s a shame that a webpage doesn’t exist with all of the photos from that event. In my humble opinion, it would be a wonderful marketing tool for the Fairy Tale Weddings folks. It would show potential clients exactly what Disney is capable of producing in the way of outrageous fun.

If I had unlimited funds, I think I would love to do that either as a welcome party or as a farewell brunch.

I hear you. I think it would be a very fun event for the guests.

Janet, here some pics simialr to what you mentioned (or atleast I'm assuming it's them as I haven't clicked on the links yet), just posting them for others. HTH.

RangerPooh, thank you for the photo. It shows the mismatched chairs beautifully, which I thought were a very playful touch for a "mad" tea party. Having chairs like those at an event would add to the cost since they'd more than likely have to come from a vendor, and probably not just any vendor, either, since they're not your "typical" party chairs. But I think mismatched chairs are the way to go if they're not too cost-prohibitive.

Again, thank you for sharing the photo.

Your welcome. Back when I was planning my wedding I had a couple of great MHT pics but they seem to ahve disappeared ove the years. I can tel you that when we were planning we wanted to do this as our reception and were quoted what we thought was relatively high $10k+ (as the mins at the time were only $5k. This was due to all of the mismatched chairs, cups, sauces, teapots, lantersm, etc were purchased for each individual event and were not typically stored. Therefore the extra cost for the event. But this was when they had just started promoting it back in 2002. So things may have every well changed since then.
