Does Disney Cruise Line Have Plans to Purchase Abandoned Cruise Ship?

It's an interesting idea for DCL. It would let them jump into an additional market where they do not currently have a footprint at a lower cost and customer base not used to or familiar with Disney's current fleet. Yes, it is a large ship but it was designed with a different market in mind. Why not take a gamble with it? Could be low risk and high reward.

And, if it doesn't work, you're stuck with a ship you can't use or sell.

Can you imagine 9,500 passengers at one time at Castaway Cay? If the ship could even dock there. Now, for the Asian market, it might work.

I'd pass as well. I already have my issues with Disney Wish, even though I'm going on it again (for kiddos not me, I prefer Dream). Larger ships in my opinion have lower quality main dining food (specialty is okay), the layout sucks (waiting for an elevator is like waiting in line for slinky dog dash), and sea days are horrible.

Adding this ship, DCL would end up doubling their fleet from 4 to 8 ships in a very short amount of time. Would be worth a gamble since the ship has already started being built and inflation/costs have risen since the initial order from the bankrupt company. Just a matter of if they can "steal it" at a fraction of the cost.

I love how we all know what the "asian market" likes in cruise ships.
I sailed on the Norwegian spirit which was a ship originally built for the Asian market and the railings on the stairs were lower and the so were the ceilings, so as a tall person it was noticeable. Maybe that’s how they can fit more people if they make the deck height lower they could probably fit an extra deck vs one made for the American market.

The Global Dream II was reported to have been heading towards being scrapped for salvage earlier this summer. It's also apparantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's Oasis class ships.

Disney might be able to take possession of this ship for a fraction of it's original cost and scale back the interior to better meet Disney standards. Perhaps two cabins become one in the resulting layout, turning this into a 4,500 person ship.

I'm curious - why do you prefer the Dream over the Wish? Aren't they, basically, the same size?

I definitely like the Dream/Fantasy better than the Wish. It is not size for me but the layout. It is totally different than the other ships. i am not saying it is bad....I actually decided I did like the ship after 5 days but I do prefer the other ships.

The main thing I associate with the so-called ‘Asian market’ (usually meaning Chinese by my understanding) would be a casino on board and I’d personally prefer Disney to not compromise on that point. The family atmosphere onboard is one of the reasons I only sail DCL (even as a single adult) as I appreciate the focus not being on drinking and gambling. It would be quite a shift if Disney did decide to go that route.

The size alone doesn’t reduce my interest if there’s a commensurate amount of activities onboard to space people out.
