Does Disney Cruise Line Have Plans to Purchase Abandoned Cruise Ship?

I think existing funnels stay, two funnels possibly added to almost the far back of the top deck there, basically rubbing up against the edge of the deck. These could be suite rooms. and then two at the front of that top deck where the water slides start. That would be my guess.
Yeah but 2 funnels on the aft of the ship just makes no sense, and doesn't really line up with their artist rendition.

I wonder if they plan to cover over the open to below parts, kind of like how MSCs World Europa is, to make more use of top deck space. Then they would have a full top deck for funnels, deck parties, etc.

For those that don't know what I mean by this, here is a picture of Europas Promenade, the back part is open to the sky, but a majority of it is covered

I've done Tokyo Sea. :fish:
Excellent!

Pardon my small joke. For those that don't quite understand, I was referring to the fact that there are 12 Disney theme parks around the world. Four at WDW in Florida, two at DL in California, two in Paris, two in Tokyo, one each in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

And for those that try to include water parks in the count - sorry no. :teacher:

Is there time for Disney to alter the amenities and interior design for the ship so they can be similar to what the other ships in the Disney fleet have?

Definitely time. This ship isn't sailing until 2025 and it was already 75% completed when they bought it. Meaning they've probably got a year of planning to do and then a year or so of building.

Lots of time though the original design included split bathrooms and a very Disney layout of the staterooms. The design was a bit bland but nice. I would guess the staterooms don’t change much probably art and some smaller details.
I’m interested in what looks like a new front with a curve and huge windows the design has a clear one but the global dream was flat in front with portholes. In the photo of it in the dock it looks like the portholes weren’t cut.
I had also assumed the “ship within a ship” concierge like area was under the pool for it at the front, but lots of those rooms now have solid balconies.

A German news site, Capital+, has revealed that Disney Cruise Line paid 40 million euros ($41,262,637 USD) for the Global Dream, which, according to the site, was 75% completed when construction was abandoned.

According to the article, the intended price of the largest cruise ship in the world was set at 1.8 billion euros ($1,856,818,651 USD). Although Disney appears to have acquired the ship at a massively discounted rate, the article does state that they “offered the highest purchase price.”

Additionally, DCL is likely to spend around 1 billion euros ($1,031,565,917 USD) to transform and complete the ship.

I figured the cost to Disney it would be costly....

Lose a billion plus on Disney+ in just one quarter, spend another billion plus on buying and fitting out a ship, then spending nearly another billion on BAMTech.... I think Chapek knew his days were numbered.

This was just too good for them to pass up.

I was wondering if they would refit the staterooms for install the split bathroom which is a hallmark of all the other DCL ships. At $1B+ for the refit they should have the money to do that.

Ironically, the Global Dream already had split bathrooms. One reason why I thought the initial rumors might have some truth to them. Disney wont need to do much modifications to the rooms themselves (aside from decor)

Thanks, didn't know that. Got to wonder what they're going to do for $1B to redo a ship that was already 75% completed.

A big chunk will be to completely retrofit the engines since the ship was not originally built with the eco-friendly "green methanol" so this might be a big change. I assume they will do significant metalwork on the exterior to make it match the DCL profile, building 6 funnels, and somehow retrofitting the top deck (still wonder how they are going to do this)

Inside, my guess is the have to completely rip out everything...carpet, light fixtures, dining rooms, furniture...everything has to be re-themed. Its not just slapping a coat of paint.

All that said, $1B is a huge sum of money for an already-built ship. To date the most expensive ships ever built were Oasis & Allure at $1.4B each. They managed to built the rest of the Oasis-fleet cheaper. Spending 1B on a ship that already had a complete hull is just mind-numbing. The Global Dream was originally pegged to cost $1.8B to build. This would put final cost to built it at well over $2B (although of course Disney wont pay all that)

My guess is that they wont really spend $1B, that was just a high level estimate to secure funding.

Going to methanol or green methanol (same thing, other than the carbon footprint of the power used to make the methanol), isn't a "huge" conversion process. Why it's where many existing ship are starting to move towards that it in order to meet newer carbon standards. Going to LNG isn't a viable option for existing ships, and does have a big impact in the design of even newer ships. Which is why some cruise lines and much of shipping have opted for methanol, on their new ships. But it wouldn't be a huge cost to go from traditional MGO to Methanol.

I am shocked at the cost to complete... with whatever changes Disney's design team has already planned. Wonder what a forth Titan ship would have cost them in 2022 dollar's?

Disney put the passengers counts for the redesign at 6,000 compared with Wish at 5,555... so not a huge bump in passenger potential numbers. But not sure how accurate those numbers alone are. Global Dream was originally slated to have 2,350 cabins vs Wish has only 1,254... so really should have been a much larger difference in Disney's own potential passenger numbers. Either they are reallocating cabins to other usages? Or fewer rooms will have more than double occupancy - can't install ceiling bunks? Or the number were just calculated differently? Manybe not a huge increase in passengers, but it is a much larger ship overall... very different experience than the Tritons will offer.

Never heard what Disney paid for the Tritons... do know Disney set aside 3.3 Billion when COVID started in order to fund their contracts with Meyer Werft.

I wonder how much the Wish class ships cost
Disney Fantasy cost $940 Million. Estimates are that the Wish was around $1B. This deal is a steal in my opinion. $1.8B ship for the price of the Wish or other triton ships.

Apparently RCCL's WONDER OF THE SEAS was originally built for China too.

Wonder of the Seas, the newest member of Royal Caribbean's Oasis class was built to sail out of China. Because of that, the newest ship in the fleet and the largest cruise ship in the world has some touches that other ships of that class don't offer.

From the Street:

The only change they mention is a second, smoke-free casino. Disney's ship won't have casinos.

I think DCL might have, if the ship stayed in China and Chapek were still around. I don’t see Iger doing a casino though.

The Wish passenger count is 4,000. 5,555 includes crew. Golden Dream will be 6,000 passengers, so 50% more than the Wish.
