GAC Needed - Chair/Alzheimers?

I've been browsing the board a bit and now I'm confused about GAC's. I took my mother to WDW in Thanksgiving of 2004 and am returning Dec. 7th thru 14th 2005, staying at AKL. (Last time we were only there 3 days and offsite. That was our first trip to WDW.) She has her own wheelchair and Alzheimer's (but does well overall as far as waiting -- I just have to be careful to pick rides that don't surprise her, for example the "mice" in "Honey I Shrunk the Audience" scared her.) She has multiple medical issues and VERY fragile skin. When we were there last Thanksgiving, I didn't have a GAC and there were absolutely no problems -- in fact I was very surprised as she usually got pulled from the line when we tried to wait in line and taken on early. My confusion has to do with whether or not I should get a GAC this time, when we did fine without one last time? Has something changed in the way wheelchairs are handled since Thanksgiving of 2004? And am I right in assuming that the 2nd week of December should be a quieter time than Thanksgiving was?

Any advice would be appreciated as I'd really like to make this trip special for her as it will be her last due to deteriorating health!

The GACs are based on need for invisible disabilities. Normally being in a WC or ECV serves certain needs. However if there were additional needs, such as poor vision requiring up-front seating at a show while the normal WC/ECV seating was at the back a GAC would be needed for that.

Hey, Michelle - you're from my home town! :cheer2:

The way the handled your mother's wheelchair in 2004 was not the typical way they were handling wheelchairs in 2004.
Since around 1999, in most cases the lines are accessible and people with wheelchairs/ecvs wait in the regular line with all the other guests. That is called Mainstream Access (I put a list of the Mainstream Access attractions further down).
The attractions that don't have Mainstream Access don't have wheelchair access in the regular lines, so they have an alternate entry place.
It's possible that most of the rides your mom was able to go on were ones without Mainstream Access or (what we have found happens in the slower times) the CMs handled your mom when you came to the ride right away because it wasn't busy and it was easier for them to just take you in.
Even of the things listed as Mainstream, the "thrill" rides have the longest lines (and you won't be going on them anyway). Most of the quieter rides in Fantasyland have wheelchair entrances because the regular line is not accessible.

The second week of December is typically a pretty quiet time from everything I have read (much quieter than Thanksgiving). You probably won't need a GAC. When we've been at WDW in quiet times, most of the attractions haven't had more than a 15 minute wait and many we were able to walk right on. You can always try things and go to Guest Services and request a GAC if it looks like you need one. But if the lines are short and she's pretty good about waiting, you may not find a problem at all.
