Virginia, Maryland and District of Columbia tags are also designed to hang from the mirror.
I am most familiar with Virginia, since that is where I live. All tags have an expiration date on both sides in LARGE numbers, done with a felt-tip pen including going over a hologram stripe. The date is then covered with plastic so it cannot be changed. Also, the month and year of expiration are hole-punched on the edges. One side also has the name and birth date of the person to whom it is issued, but you are allowed to cover it up so it is not visible but it must be shown on request to a police officer.
The temporary tags are red and valid for not more than six months. The permanent tags are blue, but are issued with a five-year expiration date and can be renewed.
Of course, it is also possible, with a permanent disability to get plates. With plates it is a good idea to also get a hang tag for use in temporary situations.
