im hearing conflicting reports has anyone here personally seen the pyramids, and if so was it safe???

When I mention the pyramids everyone says oh god no

I can't speak from first-hand experience, but FWIW there were some news stories last week that the pyramids are high on the ISIS target list. You can google to find them and determine how credible you think they are.

Ugh ISIS is the worst...

Unfortunately, I don't think it's real safe at the moment.

I have friends whom I met when they lived here in Germany to study at the university, who are Egyptian, and moved back to their home country three years ago. They very much want me to see their homeland and we want to get together again but even they are telling me it is not safe to travel there at this time.

Same here, even the Egyptian beach resorts aren't considered safe at this time.

One of my big dreams has always been to visit Egypt but I wouldn't go right now. I wish that someone would do something about ISIS.

I saw the pyramids when I was in 4th grade. That was in the 1990's and we took a family trip to Egypt. We stayed at a Marriot in Cairo that had once been a palace and even took a small plane to see the temples in Luxor. I don't think it would be a great time to visit them now.
That was a once in a life time trip for sure! I wish I had been a bit older to remember it better. I do recall several occasions when older men offered to trade a large amount of camels to my dad and grandfather in exchange for me! yikes! Redheads are rare there!

I would LOVE to go to Egypt, as well at Dubai and Abu Dhabi... but until that area of the world is safer, I think I will pass. I do hope that I will get there sometime in my lifetime!

I've seen the pyramids, however this was back in 2006ish.

I'm not sure I would go today. We went to several places in Egypt and they were all amazing. We found the Egyptian people wonderful, very friendly and warm.

When we went it was definitely not as tense as it is now, but there was an advisory in effect and tourism was low.

As American citizens, we had to have Egyptian army (I assumed army) guards travel with us to get to some places driving through the desert. Our driver and guard were very nice but it was a bit weird riding with a couple of machine guns.

We didn't feel threatened at all on that trip, which included Egypt, Jordan and Israel (including the Palestinian controlled territories).

We have travelled a lot so are very sensitive to local customs and dress for certain sights.

I too would love to see the great pyramids, but I don't feel it's safe in Egypt. Between the terrorists and the less-than-stable government, I just wouldn't risk it.

We went in 2011 and things were not as bad as they are now. I don't think I would go now. There's a chance of being kidnapped or thrown in prison or having other bad things happen. If I were to go I would stay close to the pyramids and never go anywhere alone or at night. There are still plenty of people going but it's riskier than it had been in the past. When we went it was after the revolution but before the election so it was a window of time where Egyptians were feeling happy and hopeful about the future. Things are looking pretty bleak at the moment and tourism which is the main way people feed their families is down the tubes. There's more desperate people than ever before. And desperate people can sometimes do scary things.

I went in 2010 and had an amazing vacation in Egypt; there's a great deal to see besides the pyramids. My 30 year old niece vacationed there about a month ago; she is single and went on a solo vacation there. There are still tourists visiting the country although not nearly as many as before the revolution. Everybody's comfort levels are different; I would not visit the country today and I'm so grateful that I went before this happened so that I didn't have to remove it from my bucket list.

I went to Egypt in '97. It was right after the attack at the Temple of Hatshepsut. I was afraid, our tour had armed escorts with us the whole time. We saw the Pyramids, Sphinx, 7 day cruise on the Nile, Luxor, Abu Simbel. We only spent 2 nights in Cairo and I didn't go out on my own-which is not usual for me. I LOVED Egypt. It was amazing, stunning, facinating. Check out some of the better tour companies so you have escorts and security plans in case of an emergency. I told people who were worried that I'd rather die doing something fun than sitting on my couch, if it was my day to go.

Some people I work with routinely go for work reasons (and they have done the tourist things) but it's definitely not safe. They stay in specific hotels for Americans that are guarded and it is dangerous for them to be out and about.

I was there in 1992, no issues at all and I felt completely safe. I wouldn't go now, though.

This is true. I just asked my DH if he would go and he said yes. I asked him didn't he think it was dangerous and he didn't think so. It's a beautiful country and God knows they need the money.

We were there in 2010, and it was an amazing trip! Even then, when there was peace everywhere, we had armed escorts; it was just a fact that they wanted their American visitors to feel secure at all times. We saw the pyramids, the Sphinx (which isn't nearly as big as I always thought it was), the temple at Luxur, Abu Simbel, we cruised the Nile for four days, we saw the Valley of the Kings, etc, etc. It was at the top of our bucket list, and we saw it all. The history there, that is carbon-dated back to the Bible Times, will leave you in awe.
