can you get insurance mid year? My daughter is going back to school full time in the fall so won't be covered under her employer any longer. Cobra was way too expensive so is she able to sign up in August or will she have to be insurance-less until January?

Yes. That's what they call a "Life change". Things like changing jobs, getting married, having a baby all fit in that rule that allows you to buy insurance outside of open enrollment.

she should check with the school. some offer student insurance. At UMD it costs about $1500 for the full year and offers good coverage, not an outrageous high deductible plan. Many schhols offer something similar

How old is your daughter? If under 26 she can go right back onto your family policy.

She should definitely check with the school. Some universities require students to have health insurance.

And most have a "preferred" provider. In other words, a group plan with one company for their students.
