Thank you!Last time we were there, we needed our Firestick. We were there in May.
I discovered Odd Birds at the Farmers Market a few years ago and now it is a must visit each trip. In fact, last fall I was in Savannah with no real reason to go to HHI and drove all the way there for lunch. The Mexican Chocolate cookie is what got me hooked but most recently I have dreams about their everything biscuits... I will be sure to grab a blueberry muffin when I am there next month!Okay, this is an out of the blue remark, but I'm jonesing for some good pastries this morning and have none. So, that got me thinking about the best places in and around HHI. Here are my Top 3 (though for varying reasons):
Hilton Head Social Bakery
A superb, all-around pastry and light breakfast/lunch spot. They have some great desserts, pastries, quiches, sandwiches, and breads (I especially like their baguettes). One of the best things about them is their proximity to the resort--maybe a five-minute walk from your room and across the marina bridge and you're there. The only real downside to them is they are pricey. For example, their raspberry macaron is exceptional...and costs upwards of $8. Still, this is wonderful spot to find all kinds of treats. They have opened a second shop just down the Wm Hilton Pkwy just before you get to Sea Pines.
Oddbirds Cafe
This superb little joint is located in Bluffton just after you cross over the bridges (driving from the resort). It's located in a little shopping center off to the left of the first traffic light after crossing those bridges. Frankly, I like their pastry and bakery options better than HHSB, and they're less expensive, too. Their biscuits are excellent, as are their quiches, salads, and sandwiches. Of particular note, however, are two items I highly recommend. First, for those with a sweet tooth, the Salty Malty Chocolate Chip cookie is huge, costs less than $3, and is one of the best cookies ever. Soft, moist, rich, and gooey with just a touch of sea salt. You'll want more than one. Second, and the Grand Prize Winner is their Blueberry Muffin--hands down the best I've ever had, and I have had them from Maine to Alaska and numerous points in between on my travels and various duty stations. They are made with browned butter, with a bit of lemon zest tossed in, and chock full of juicy, plump blueberries. They will ruin you for any other blueberry muffins, and I suggest getting to Oddbirds early as they usually only make a dozen and often sell out. They are not open on Sundays, sadly.
Alljoy Donuts
No list would be complete without the best donut joint in town--this place is it. Trust me. I've recommended this little shop in Old Town Bluffton to several people, and every one of them has raved about it...and for good reason. These are the old-style yeast donuts, primarily, though I do believe they have some cake-style ones, too. The sign of a really good donut shop is how well they can make the signature, plain, glazed donut. Let me tell you, then, that Alljoy makes a stunningly good glazed donut. They also have another 20+ donuts of varying styles, one of the best being their Peanut Butter Cup donut--it satisfies both the yeasty donut and sweet tooth candy-lover at the same time. Their Apple Fritter is huge and one of the best I've ever had. So many selections to choose from but, again, their signature glazed donut is worth the drive alone. The one drawback? They're only open from 7 a.m. to 1p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. And get there early for the best selection and lowest crowds.
You might want to also try the pecan coffee cake. It was amazing!I discovered Odd Birds at the Farmers Market a few years ago and now it is a must visit each trip. Thanks for the info! Sounds like I'd better call them in the next few days-there are a couple items currently in the villas I'd love to purchase. For instance, I'd love one of those lamps with the birds, and I'd love one of the shadow boxes that they have over the bed with the birds. Ever since the time they (the Florida construction crew, NOT the HHI CMs) just smashed up Shadows paw prints, I don't trust them!Refurb Update: Just returned & Joe at front desk said that whomever is to approve the refurbed rooms is coming next week to stay in them. If approved, should start immediately. He did say they weren't allowed to see them but hear they are amazing. It's time for DHHIR to get some love. Let's get it going!
Was that possibly Joe Caruso? Tall, medium dark hair, easy smile, and not wearing a front desk outfit?Refurb Update: Just returned & Joe at front desk said that whomever is to approve the refurbed rooms is coming next week to stay in them. Not sure - possibly -- Looks late 50's to early 60's with some gray in his hair but he was wearing his CM outfitWas that possibly Joe Caruso? Tall, medium dark hair, easy smile, and not wearing a front desk outfit?
Nope, not Joe Caruso then. The front desk CMs rarely get out to see anything on property. They'd be allowed to view the rooms if they asked, but usually they don't much explore beyond that front desk area unless they walk down to TMO for a quick lunch. Custodians, housekeeping assistants, and housekeepers on the other hand...well, they've been known to sneak a peek or two or five...Not sure - possibly -- Looks late 50's to early 60's with some gray in his hair but he was wearing his CM outfit
If only disney would releaSe a refurb schedule or test room pictures.Nope, not Joe Caruso then. The front desk CMs rarely get out to see anything on property. Yeah, it's that release thing...If only disney would releaSe a refurb schedule or test room pictures.
Well, Disney is all about hush-hush, there's no doubt about it. I do think people will end up liking the rooms overall even if some of the unique touches go missing.Last week, I asked two women at the front desk about whether they had seen the refurbed rooms. They said they hadn't and that everything is being kept hush-hush. They said that they know nothing. One stated that she just wanted a new uniform because she was tired of dressing like Andy Griffith. LOL!
Beach house shuttle is accessible.I searched this thread for some info but wasn't able to find it. Hopefully someone can help me.
We are no longer DVC Members but when we were we visited DHHR twice and loved it. Hoping to get back there again some day.
I was wondering if the shuttle to the Beach House is accessible? My DH has a scooter.
Also, are the refillable mugs the 50th anniversary theme or DHHR themed?
That's great! Thank you so much for the info.Beach house shuttle is accessible.
Refillable mugs at dhhir are random and seems to be whatever Orlando sends them.
They did have them when we were there 1st of the month.Beach house shuttle is accessible.
