Hotel near Las Vegas Airport?

I'm full of questions today . . .

We plan to fly into Las Vegas and begin our two-week western trip from that point. Likely we'll arrive in the evening, which -- because we're coming from the East Coast -- will feel like 10:00 or 11:00 to us. We'll want to pick up our rental car, then find a hotel for that one night. The next morning we plan to get up, make a grocery story run, then head for our first stop: The Grand Canyon. We plan to "do Vegas" at the end of our trip.

Can anyone recommend a decent but inexpensive hotel near the airport?
Will it be easy for us to find a Super-Walmart (or similar) on the road from Vegas to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon? I say Super-Walmart because we will need to purchase a cooler and a couple other things as well as actual food.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Can't help with the hotel but if recollection servmes me the strip itself is not more than 10 minutes or so from the airport.

I notice you mention buying a cooler on arrival - we went to Texas last year and we took one of our rolling coolers. We packed it with the towels, sunscreen etc, duck taped it and checked it as luggage with no issues. The TSA guys opened it but the beauty of ducttape was they sealed it right back up.

There's a Motel 6 on Tropicana Blvd just east of the strip, very close to the airport and the Tropicana Hotel itself. There might be better choices, but that's a place to start.

Check what kind of deal you can get at SouthPoint Hotel Casino. They are soouth of the airport not near any of the other major hotels, but an easy drive from the rental car facility. They were also close to Target Great Lands (or maybe it was a Super Walmart) as well as a SuperMarket.

This idea never occured to me -- you can check a cooler? Hmmm . . . I want to buy a few necessities for cooler-meals -- a cutting board, a can opener, BUT a sharp knife is the item that's most notable. If I pack a sharp knife from home, can it be in the checked cooler? That'd mean I'd have to enter the airport with a knife -- obviously not in my hand, but in the things to be checked. Will that cause any concern?

Usually I subscribe to the theory of "There are two types of luggage: carry-on and lost", though this will be a direct flight, so chances of it being lost are minimal.

THANKS to all for the hotel suggestions -- I'll check them right now. How about the Best Western near the airport? Anyone have any experience with that place?

Knives, corkscrews and other sharp things can go in your checked luggage. we have a smaller (24 can size) cooler that we use as a carry-on for almost all of our trips. It's a perfect size for our medications, toiletries and the obligatory one change of clothes and then at the destination we have a place to keep our beverages, fruit and cheese cold.

Stayed at the airport BW too many years ago to give it a rating today. Keep in mind that the rental car location is off airport and south of the airport. IIRC, the BW is just north of the airport. As you are heading east from LV, why not look on that side of town for a hotel?

The airport is very close to the South end of the strip, you can get some good deals for Luxor and Excalibur right now.

We just stayed at Mandalay Bay and it was VERY close to the airport. Luxor and Excaliber and beside it. Mandalay Bay is very nice. Not sure if the price will be in your range but I know they have had some specials lately.

There's a Doubletree w/ an Applebees in it on Warm Springs. It's real close and should be cheap enough. It's also in a nice area :thumbsup2

We stayed at the Hyatt Place right near the airport for just 1 nt.
It wasn't luxurious but new, clean, huge room with about 30" flat panel tv that could swivel toward bed or living room area which had a huge sectional sofa. Biggest reg. hotel room (non-suite) I've ever been in.
Best part was price- only $80 thru Hyatt's website and incl. free cont. breakfast too! :thumbsup2
