Day 3, October 31st, 2016-Part 3- A Burger, A Sprinkle, Lots of Meat & Treats, & a Halloween Party!
'Ohana
'Ohana
Well, my MIL is moved in to her new Senior Living apartment! My DH is still in the midst of transferring his mom & dad's most important items to the new place as we speak, and he's been at it all weekend. His sister & her friend came down yesterday morning from where they live in North Jersey, and spent the day moving stuff out of the house, and to the new place. My DH took off from work, and they moved things from the early AM until early evening, and were right back at it early this morning. SIL's DH drove down this morning to help. Sadly, my FIL is back in the ICU. He almost went into septic shock Tuesday evening, and it was quite scary for a while. With lots of IV antibiotics and other IV meds to stabilize him, he's doing okay at the moment. He went to the OR yesterday to have his extremely infected leg debrided of the infected areas & dead tissue. We're hoping he'll be moved out of the ICU sometime this week.
Okaaay! Let's get back to this Dining Report! So when I last left you, I had just finished eating the most amazing cupcake I've ever had! We took the boat back to POFQ to get ready for our dinner, and then MNSSHP! It's somewhat of a tradition for us to eat at 'Ohana's or LTT before MNSSHP or MVMCP. This trip it was to be 'Ohana! How I found an appetite after that huge burger, fries & cupcake I had for lunch is beyond me, but I did! We had early reservations, 4pm, if I'm not mistaken. Our table wasn't ready yet, so we sat at the Tambu Lounge...
...and I had one of these delicious beauties. I found this to be very spicy, but I loved it! Not sure if it was the Wasabi Blood Mary, which online menus have listed as costing $9,50 or just the plain ole regular one, as my receipt says it cost $8.25, and it was described as just a Bloody Mary. Never the less, it tasted hot enough to be the Wasabi one.
Look how happy I am! I even have on Mickey ears. I must confess this is the very first time I've ever worn Mickey ears. For real. I wore them on two occasions this trip, the MNSSHP, and then the MVMCP! I didn't find them annoying at all, which I thought I would, as I hate things on my head.
My honey is looking pretty happy, too! I think because he's excited for all that good food coming up!
Mixed Greens Salad - with a Lilikoi dressing. I'm not sure what the ingredients are in Lilikoi dressing, but it's pretty good. Has a slightly sweet taste to it. Not amazing, but a tad above average than your run of the mill restaurant dinner salads.
I just happened to find the Lilikoi dressing recipe on Allears. Imagine that!
Ohana Lilikoi Dressing
Ingredients:
3 T rice wine vinegar
1/2 small shallot
1 small garlic clove
1 T lemon juice
1 tt Worcestershire sauce
1 tt Dijon mustard
1/2 tt honey
Pinch of Salt
3/4 C Conola oil
1/3 C pog juice (Passion fruit purée)
1 T fresh parsley
Method of Preparation:
Dressing: Purée the first eight ingredients in a blender. gradually blend in the oil, then passion fruit purée and parsley
Salad
Ingredients:
6 oz Lettuce blind
3 oz Lilikoi Dressing
2 oz Diced Papaya
2 oz Mandarin oranges
'Ohana Pineapple Coconut Bread. I can't tell you how this tastes since I don't eat gluten, but from what others say, it's heavenly. I don't think my DH thinks that highly of it, as he really didn't eat much of it, but then again, he was probably saving his appetite for the really good stuff!
My delicious out of this world gluten free rolls! Had you going there for a minute, didn't I? Yea, these aren't good. They never are. They're really only good for being a vehicle to eat some of that butter, and if you don't eat them quickly enough they turn into rocks, so save the calories and the room in your stomach, and pass on these.
Ahhh, now for the yummy stuff! Sadly, I can't eat any of these. DH loves them though. Usually the chef will make me my own wings, but I don't like them, so I told him not to bother making me any. I mean, I like wings, just not these specially prepared gluten free wings. They're too wet or something. I like my meat dry, well at least my chicken. Nothing grosses me out more than wet fat chicken.
Here's my plate of boring rice and veggies. I have to tell you, about seven years ago we ate at 'Ohana and the chef made me an amazing creation. It probably didn't taste any better than what I had for this meal, but visually it was stunning, and therefore, in my mind, tasted better.
I found the pic! Here it is, from May 2010!
Hey Brandon! Send some of that yummy Szechuan Sirloin Steak this way! I know some folks have said they've had steak that wasn't very tender, and maybe actually even tough, but we must be very lucky, because it is always very tender & very flavorful whenever we've eaten here.
Sweet and Sour Chicken? Yes, please! This is neither too wet nor too fat, as I can cut it into thin strips, unlike the fatty floppy skinned chicken wings!
And my favorite, the Spicy Grilled Peel-n-Eat Shrimp! Yum Yum Yum!!!
Drumroll please! The star of the show, the piece de resistance, we have 'Ohana Bread Pudding - served a la mode with Bananas, vanilla ice cream and Caramel Sauce
Okay, does this look delicious or what? Again, I can't have any. I can have the ice cream, but really, who is here for the ice cream? I am usually offered vanilla ice cream over a dry brownie. I passed on dessert. DH enjoyed this thoroughly though.
Now that we were sufficiently stuffed, it was time to hop a monorail and get ready to PAR-Tae!
