I love credit cards so much! v6.0 - 2023 (see first page for add'l details)

Question re: Cap One VX cards- we have a personal card and considering the biz one with the new SUB structure. Can you combine the $300 travel credits? E.g. if booking a hotel for $1,000, use both together? Or would you need to make 2 reservations and then contact hotel to link? Thx!

Anyone receive 1099s for Chase UR support points yet? I only had 1 support for both myself and 1 for my husband, so 40K each of us. I think maybe that's less than they send a 1099 out for, but just wondering if anyone had seen anything yet.

I haven't received anything yet but 40k points should be under the $600 that will trigger a 1099 from Chase.

Question about using credit cards:

Are you guys comfortable using them when somebody comes to your house to do repairs?

For example, I have a plumber coming to do repairs. I'm always trying to get frequent flyer miles, so I typically put anything on a credit card if I can. But I'm leery about giving my credit card information to some random person who comes to my house. I mean, he won't exactly be random. I called the plumbing company and they're sending him. But I'm always concerned about identity theft, etc. So I typically pay these people with a check.

Am I being ridiculous?
I would much rather they have my credit card number than bank account number and signature. All they can do with a cc is charge to it which I would catch almost immediately and dispute (on a personal cc you aren’t liable if you didn’t make/authorize the charge under law, business cc’s however are not covered under that law). If they go on to commit check fraud that could really screw up my bank account and cascade from there.

I just need to vent. You may recall that I inadvertently got my husbands first Biz card locked for fraud because I panicked and did the stop payment.

Well... we are going to miss the SUB now because of that and the time it took him to call them and get it sorted. We would have to have over $3K posted before 2/4 and the CL on the card is only $3K to begin with.

At least I got the support points, I guess.

It’s frowned upon, but you can ‘cycle’ the credit. Which means charging $3k, paying it off, then charging another $3k. You have enough time to do it, which is what I’d recommend. The points are too valuable to at least not try. I’m guessing that he doesn’t have another account to transfer credit from? If he does, that would make it easier to meet the MSR.

I have heard that this was frowned upon as well but I have cycled frequently with Chase and never had a problem. I frequently have a zero balance by the time the first bill comes and the SUB completed. :rolleyes1

I’m going to post my thoughts on the Cape Fahn. If this stay were cash I would be very unhappy; however I am going to base my thoughts on the stay being on points.

First, this resort comes across as very penny-pinching. There is saving money, then there is looking downright cheap to your guests and this one definitely comes across as the latter. For example, if you want to take the slippers from the room home with you (previously used — they wash and re-use them and don’t even get me started on how unsanitary that is 🤮), it’s going to cost you $10.00. And they are gosh awful slippers, frankly you couldn’t pay me to take them. Another example, the a/c in the restaurant was off at dinner. This is the tropics and since it was raining outside, everyone was eating indoors, so it was probably over 90 degrees in the restaurant. Massively uncomfortable. Breakfast is not some great spread — I find it very lacking. They have a few kinds of fruit, bread and a toaster, cereal, baked goods, yogurt and some fresh juices. Then a few items you can order from the menu. I asked for a smoothie yesterday and was told they don’t have any. The shaving kits don’t have shave cream, just a razor. I used the shaving kit at both the Rosewood and the Inside House and both had a razor and shaving cream.

The service is what I will describe as very “hands off”. Like you have to find someone to ask for your bill 30 mins after you finished dinner because the wait staff is sitting behind the bar on their phones (this happened the last 2 nights). Likewise sitting by the beach, when you first sit down they bring you ice water and some fruit. Then you don’t see anyone again for the remainder of the day.

The majority of the staff don’t speak English. No exaggeration. It seems a lot speak Mandarin as their second language, but definitely not English. This makes it extremely hard to communicate with them. Even at reception English is not understood. Yesterday I went to Fisherman’s Village, which is a nice place to wander the streets for an hour or so; it’s a 20 min cab ride from the hotel. To get to and from the hotel you have to take a boat (high tide) or huge 4x4 (low tide) across the water. I was told when I got here not to walk because there are rocks and you can cut your feet in this part of the crossing. Anyways when I got back to the “lounge” last night I called for the 4x4 (low tide) and the reception told me to walk across, in the dark. I asked for the 4x4 and he could not understand me. It wasn’t until another couple were dropped off at the lounge that spoke Mandarin spoke to reception and they finally said they’d send the 4x4. Like WTH?

Inconsistent service. First night no treat left at turndown. Next 2 nights small treat bags left (6 x chocolate covered almonds and last night some chocolate peanut treats). Then tonight nothing. I was here when turn down was done and when I asked he had no clue what I was saying.

This is a first. Went to brush my teeth and housekeeping must have tossed my toothbrush and toothpaste. I have no clue why but I sure hope it’s something that never happens again. Luckily there is a toothbrush kit in the villa.

The Cape Fahn is on a ”private island”, directly across from a super touristy part of Koh Samui. I mentioned previously that you can walk across in low tide because the water is very shallow (it took me maybe 5-7 mins when I went across on my first night). It seems that a lot of people from the mainland resorts like to walk across and stare at the guests staying here (the pool is right on the beach). I have seen several wander right up the private residence, which is adjacent to the pool, just across a shallow water crossing. Yesterday I saw someone lie in the hammock belonging to the Cape Fahn for a good 2 hours before wandering back across the water. There is security, but he is rarely there to stop anyone. If I had an iota of daytime sun by my villa pool I wouldn’t be at the main pool.

I must mention what they call the gym. It is a teeny tiny space. Like if there are more than 4 people in there it’s going to be awkward. It contains 2 treadmills, an elliptical, a recumbent bike and another bike, all from probably 1990ish. There are free weights and a bench press machine. That’s it. Barely any floor space to stretch or do floor exercises and it would be impossible to do so if there were anyone else in the space. The first morning I went and the a/c was off; I had no clue how to turn it on, and inside the gym was as hot as it was outside. But I worked out anyways. Then a man and wife came in and he knew where to find a remote to turn on the a/c, which helped a bit, but I was already 45 mins into my workout when they arrived. Thankfully it has been on yesterday and this morning. They have a weighted hula hoop there, which I really enjoy, but there is no chance you can use it if there is anyone else in the gym due to the lack of floor space. Heck I had to do push ups between the elliptical and one of the treadmills this morning (and there wasn’t much space) because there was someone else there and that was the only space where it was possible to do them without her over tripping me.

On a redeeming note, the bed is very comfortable and the food I’ve had at dinner has been good.

I could go on, but I’m sure my point has been made. I would not come back to the Cape Fahn, points or not. I’d go to the Conrad, or try another island. If anyone wants to visit I’d advise you to temper your expectations. I read some blogs before coming that probably had comped stays (DUH) and was expecting so much more. I need to stop reading blog reviews, especially those that have their stays comped.

That's too bad. The pictures look beautiful.

I don't follow that logic. The bank didn't give a $3K credit line per month; it's an ongoing $3K credit line that would need to be replenished as it is spent down. I haven't had to do much cycling but when I'm only extended a small credit line relative to a required spend, whether it's for a free night certificate or sign-up bonus, then I've never had issues with spending, paying for the charges, and spending again.
Well, that is the logic of the credit card companies, and it (credit limit cycling) has been reported as a factor in Chase shutdowns: https://thepointsguy.com/news/dont-let-chases-shutdown-pattern-bite-you/

Is CL cycling always a problem? Obviously not. Is it risk-free? Also obviously not. Just because it has been fine for you in the past doesn't mean it will be fine in the future, or that it will be fine for someone else with a different financial situation.

As I said, I have done it in the past and won't categorically rule out doing it in the future, but I will also try not to need to, and to use other options (like transferring credit from one card to another) if possible.

Yes, scary stuff. Good lesson not to push the limits on what can look like abuse or money laundering. However, personally if you don't have any other red flags to worry about, cycling your CL once or twice to meet a SUB probably won't be a problem. But there are no guarantees. Technically, churning cc can also cause problems.

taxes, ugh

How is it that every year I forget that project is coming until my first tax doc shows up in mid-January??

I'm expecting one because I'm over $600 and haven't received. Got my Chase bank account bonus 1099, but not the credit card points.

me too.

Unfortunately I live in a state that already implemented the $600 for third party payments, even though the IRS delayed it, so I got a1099-K from Seat Geek yesterday that has an error on it. Going to find out how difficult it is to get fixed. I sold some tickets in July and August, but there is a random December payment on it too ☹️

This is his only biz account (he does have a personal). I don't think they transfer CLs between personal and biz tho, do they?

Thanks to many of you who reached out with suggestions about judicious use of credit cycling. I think I have done that once or twice on a couple of my low CL CIC's but... considering we just went through the whole potential "Fraud" issue, I don't want to draw too many eyes to his accounts. Coupled with the fact that he was not thrilled about this venture from the get-go, I feel like I need to mark this as an L.

I did get the support bonus so the whole thing wasn't totally in vain.

I feel like I've let you all down!

There are many dps that Chase unofficially allows 115 days to earn the SUB. My guess is your date is going by the tracker or the date the card was approved. Any chance your CL will open up in time to reach it before the end of the 115 days? I really hate for you to give up on this SUB. This first one is going to be the hardest and all the others will be much easier after this.

Just a warning about a new scam.

I saw on my cousin’s Facebook story that she was selling 4 Taylor Swift tickets to her Saturday night Toronto concert and to message her if interested. So I messaged her right away and she said she wanted $400.00 / ticket, which seemed quite low. She then asked which e-mail I used for TicketMaster, which I gave her. She said she’d put my name on the tickets as soon as she received the $$ and gave me a bizarre e-mail address to send the $$ to (something like bgzvht@gmail.com) — I questioned the odd address and she said that’s the one she used to receive money transfers. I said that I’d send a $5.00 test to make sure she received the money before sending the rest of the funds. She said she’d like at least half. I said fine, before I send please let me know my mom’s first name (I know that I’ve never posted that info on FB). Several minutes go by and I get IDK. I said of course you know, you’re my cousin and you knew my mom most of your life. She then comes back with my dh and dd’s names (both linked on FB); I said please tell me my dad’s first name. Again, nothing. At which point I said I’m not sending any money and I’m going to let my cousin know that her FB account has been hacked.

Please be careful everyone looking for TS tickets. Some people have no moral compass, which saddens me. Hopefully my cousin gets into her account and lets all of her friends know that her account was hacked and no one sent $$ to the scammer. Because it was on her story I couldn’t post a reply that her friends would see.

I haven't received mine and I know we are going to get them.

Probably have $2,000 in support points.

Thanks all for the comments. I guess I'll go ahead and book the other components for our trip and make sure everything is cancelable. My mom is in FL helping her friend after hip surgery (or knee, I can't remember). My sister was upset my mom postponed starting, but my mom is the person who had broken ribs and didn't know it, LOL. She's a tad tough. But her age is showing more and more. And after losing my dad so unexpectedly and fast, you really never do know.

I guess the next focus is a new credit card. I have to figure out my insurance ASAP and then I need to charge my property taxes too. I guess I need to look into the bennies of the Amex plat personal vs biz. I've never had a gold biz personal. And I believe you can't do plat to biz and get SUB on both anymore. I did have an Amex Gold biz I closed. Otherwise I'm not sure what other card to look at. Maybe the IHG cards I can cycle. Or maybe look into Cap 1 (I don't have any).

On the Delta front I would downgrade to gold biz. I cancelled my husbands delta plat biz this fall and now he is unable to get another delta card (all have pop ups). Amex has implemented the family rule with all the Delta cards. I didn’t think it would matter to cancel it because he doesn’t fly that much and I have the cards and am Delta Plat anyway…but now I view it as a mistake. The 15% on mileage flights is also nice.
I totally forgot about the 15%. I might keep it for that. Though I get non-rev on Delta now. When/if the BF and I ever make this relationship legal, I do know that Delta offers their cards to employees w/ no AF! So I may go that route someday too!
