So, when traveling I like to take pictures with iphone. When I cruise I turn it on airplane mode. Would that work in Japan to? Also I'm guessing at least once I'll want to use internet, still deciding if I will bring laptop or iPad, do hotels have wi-fi, etc? Coming from USA if that helps

You can turn roaming and data off on your phone if you want. Basically the same as airplane mode, should work fine. As for wi-fi, it's going to depend on your hotel. The thing to remember is Japan IS NOT like the US. Free wifi is incredibly difficult to find, and in some cases (for example, Starbucks), you need to register a login ahead of time before you can use the network.

not looking for free wifi, we would pay, haha mom is addicted to the internet so guessing she will want to use it once in hotel if they have it. I've lived without it cruising for two weeks, so I can deal 8 days

Hotels and Starbucks will have free wifi. You could also rent a mifi device then you can connect to that wherever you go. If you're devices are unlocked or have an iPad with 3G you could always rent a SIM card and pick it up right at the airport. The company is bmobile and I highly recommend them.

Disneyland Hotel,Ambassador and MiraCosta have FREE high speed internet. There is a ethernet cable in the drawer and it plugs into a port on the floor by the chair. If you have any problem they will send someone up right away to help you. Also if the ethernet is a problem they will bring you a mini wireless modem router on request. You are in for a treat as The Tokyo Disney service experience is unlike any other on earth.

You have to check with individual hotel for wifi availability. Each hotel is different. Some have it in come common area(s) while some have it in all rooms.

You might find it handy to have internet access in case you get lost while out and about, or just to look up info while you're exploring.

I've used eConnect Japan http://www.econnectjapan.com a couple times with good results, if you're looking to get a SIM.

Luckily Japan is trying to encourage tourism and one way to do it is free internet.

There is free wi-fi service now provided by NTT all around Tokyo.

I personally haven't used it as I didn't find out about it until recently as I used Starbucks and 7-11's wi-fi in Japan in the past. Recent trip I used T-Mobile's free internet connection service through Docomo.

Let us know how the wi-fi service works.

You can rent an internet device very cheaply from Global Advanced Communications. I've also used Rentafone Japan.

Internet in Japan is not as readily available as in the US.

Thanks so much for posting this. We are here now and it has been very helpful. It worked at a lot of the train stations we went to. We used facebook messenger to "text" with our japanese family to find meetup places in tokyo. Having this app combined with our free wifi at the hotel we had adequate internet service.
