Jayme Closs-Found Alive

John Walsh was on GMA this morning and he said this guy is one of the worst he has ever encountered (and he has encountered many). He also advised Jayme and her family NOT to do any TV interviews or go on any shows like GMA. Her focus should be on healing and getting into therapy and putting her life back together. I still feel so bad for him and what he went through years ago with his own son going missing.

MJ

I strongly agree. Keep Jayme AND her family out of the media so she can heal. They need to be working with a child trauma specialist who can hopefully tell them what is in Jayme's best interest.

Pictures of them are everywhere! I can only imagine how she's feeling! She has to grieve the traumatic loss of her parents and process all the other horrors she's been through, as well as settle into a new home with others, etc. I am really glad she has her dog, Molly, there with her. Molly experienced some of that trauma, too, right along with her, and I'm sure will help her heal. Jayme looks sort of shell-shocked in pictures. They will probably be hard for her to look at some day.

As for him, his father and brother showed up in court yesterday. Not sure where his mother, sister and other family were. We haven't heard much about them yet.

Read the criminal compliant. True evil. An evil that no one saw coming and couldn’t be control. This is a clear case where the death penalty should be swift and immediate.

The media needs to stop focusing on her. Her family needs to get off social media ASAP.

I just wonder, did this guy really have no previous history of trouble? Anyone that can kill others without provocation and feel no remorse has to be off their rocker, unless he just snapped, but that doesn't sound plausible. He planned it out. People that snap just say "what the heck" and act. He didn't.

I agree! Unfortunately, Wisconsin doesn't have the death penalty.

It makes us all feel so vulnerable. Our kids are grown now, but I always felt that kids are very vulnerable getting on and off school busses, the pattern is too predictable for someone who is stalking a particular bus stop or child. Parents need to be very careful with kids at bus stops, especially young tweens and teens. The story is so disturbing, thank God that she escaped the brutal captivity and this nutty monster:eek:

This guy is truly vile, and I do not think we should waste much time or effort on a trial or jail time for him.

I can't help but wonder about the house she was at. One thing I read mentioned that he had a sister and he gave Jayme a pair of his sister's pajamas to wear. If other members of his family had clothes at this house, were they never there? Was it some type of seasonal property? It sends shivers up my spine to think the cops just missed him by less than a minute.

Setting aside the trauma of the ordeal, simply the fact that she lost both parents in minutes while they were trying to protect her and then she had to have been aware in that trunk that she was hearing a lot of sirens, the vehicle was pulling over for the sirens -- and then the sirens went right on by had to have been absolutely the last bit of psychological devastation for this girl to ever hope she would get away or survive.

I was so frustrated while this story was breaking with the people throwing out theories that she must have been partially at fault, perhaps by talking to him online. I know that no one wants to think there is just plain evil in the world and by blaming her it made it possible to believe "well it can't happen to me or my children".

I have a 13 year old girl and this entire story makes me shudder. I truly pray that Jayme's family keeps her away from all of the media around this - but man that is so incredibly hard in today's world of cell phones. I just want to hug her, so instead I'll just hug my daughter longer.

Reading some other things today, it sounds like his parents divorced when he was 12 and he stayed with his father, who worked long hours. Jake was home alone watching TV most of the time, according to an old boyfriend of his sister's. Was it coincidental that Jayme was about the age he was when his family broke apart? Perhaps a time when he last experienced some sort of happiness in his life? Idk, but just a thought.

I also read the whole criminal complaint today and noticed there were no allegation of sexual abuse. Not sure how it works, and/or whether it will come up later, but if not for that, what did he want to keep Jayme hostage for, just to be contained under his bed? Was he lonely and just wanted a companion? @cabanafrau, any insight in terms of the legalities?

I am praying it doesn't come out later, but I asked my dh this exact same question last night.

"Must have been at fault". No, I don't think that's what people, including myself, were saying. People wondered if there was a connection (as did even some authorities, apparently, according to some news sources:

Law enforcement officials haven't ruled out that Jayme unwittingly played a part in the crime).

At 13, she would still have been a victim even if she had been online with someone who came in to take her and kill her parents in order to do so, so not placing blame on her.

We read these types of stories with more frequency now, and sometimes, unfortunately, there is a connection. I'm really glad there wasn't in this case, and I have nothing but the deepest sympathy for Jayme and all of her supporters.

It seems like maybe some people who were more local to the crime had more information than those of us at a great distance away did.

Authorities already made a statement more charges may be forthcoming. That's one of the reasons I wish this case could just fade from the media spotlight, because public attention is most definitely not going to help this girl.

Probably the biggest reason those types of charges would not have been issued at the outset is that a forensic interview by a specially trained professional has probably not been done yet. Child victims in CSC cases are not interviewed by police, but by those specially trained to conduct these interviews with children for a variety of reasons, including humane and those of the legal variety. Clearly this is also a case where the police do not have to press for an interview immediately for time sensitive reasons because this waste of flesh will easily remain behind bars for a long list of other reasons and it is possible to allow the victim some time to reorient herself after significant trauma.

Ah, makes sense. Thank you!

Unfortunately, Wisconsin doesn't have the death penalty.
My state doesn't, either, but there have been some cases here that went that route on federal charges - the Boston Bomber case being one, and Gary Sampson being another.

Massachusetts does not have a death penalty, but Sampson was charged with federal crimes that allow for capital punishment. It was the second time a jury in Massachusetts has issued a death sentence in the last two years: Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev received the death sentence in 2015, though he has appealed.

So there is hope.

He randomly saw her get on a school bus one day. He followed her home to find out where she lived. They had never met before. He tried twice but decided there was too much activity in the house the previous 2 times. He tried breaking in, the father was shot at the front door, the mother and daughter hid in the bathroom and called 911. The perv broke down that door, told the mother to hang up and tape her daughter and then shot her after she complied. He dragged Jayme out the front door, slipping on the father's pool of blood while he dragged her out to his car (which is why the police figured she probably didn't go willingly). He hid her and intimidated her by putting her under a bed for hours at a time, even going so far as to hit her in the head once when she moved a box. She was brave enough to escape. All this was in the local news.

I'm glad she was found alive. I'm sure she had her remaining family have healing to do. I just wish they could focus on the other 55 missing kids across the state and give them a chance to be highlighted and have information on their whereabouts splattered across the media.

I watched the special the other night, and the aunt (who has been on social media and other news sources) took the cameras into her home, showed the presents she had bought for the girl, and basically talked as freely as if she was talking to her best friend. Now I understand that she's under stress, and is extremely relieved, and is mourning the loss of the parents, but I dearly wish *someone* would tell her to go silent. There are so many other creepy weirdos out there.

On a practical note, I hope there are provisions in place for getting this poor girl the help she needs, because her parents are dead. It's almost like a horrible reverse version of winning the lottery. She has a ton of publicity, no knowledge on how to deal with the mundane matters such as guardianship/selling of the family home/medical and psychological care, etc. I read Elizabeth Smart's book, and she had long term issues that took years to work through, and that was with her parents still alive.

And what they should do to this perv, IMHO, can't be put into print. If, for no other reason, than to discourage other copycats in the future.

I'm trying not to judge the aunt, but it doesn't seem from the outside like she's acting in Jayme's best interest. Splashing her all over social media seems like the opposite of what a concerned guardian should be doing. That's IMHO and I'm not a child trauma specialist.

It’s simple—there is evil out there. If one believes in God you have to also believe in his fallen angel. And I don’t even consider myself a religious person. Sometimes there are no logically answers.
