June 2011 No Buy Thread- Keeping our summer spending in check

Random question of the day!

If your car was worth $2500 and you had recently put $600 of repairs into it, how much more would put into it before calling it quits and getting something else? My check engine light is on for the 4th time in a month. It is almost 12 years old with 128K miles on it.

I recieved an old car from my parents last summer and haven't put much money into it so I really don't think I can help answer that question...

I guess...if I were you and I felt like I SHOULDN'T be spending anymore on an old car, then I probably would have already made up my mind. Stop wasting your money and invest in a good new car?

I was kind of absent yesterday, but today is a no-buy, woohoo! I'm pretty sure tomorrow will be a no-buy too, depending on how strong my will-power will be in NOT getting that Iced coffee from McDonalds I always get on Thursday nights...

Ah, yes ....king cake! My local snowball stand still has king cake flavor. :thumbsup2 It's quite sweet, and tastes approximately like a king cake!

Do you commute to the city? You're not affected by the flooding are you?
I'm glad to hear you are doing better with your budget over time! I also am, although it doesn't look like it right now! And you're welcome. :thumbsup2

That snowball sounds heavenly! We have avoided the snowball stands lately but maybe I can loosen the purse strings in the next week or so. I commute to Baton Rouge, and kids' schools are there too. No, we're not around the flooding thank goodness.

I fell off the wagon the last few days, have not checked this thread or stayed up with our tracking, just caught up on everything though. So far I'm still within budget (although getting close to our max for eating out, which is scary since it's just the 8th!!) and I've had 4 no-buy days!

Went and ran errands today. It was so hot out that I treated myself to an iced coffee from McDonald's, yum. We also got a Jersey Mike's sandwich to split for dinner as it was just too hot to cook.

I had a dentist appointment today. Fortunately, my dental insurance paid for the visit in its entirety. I didn't even have a co-pay. :thumbsup2

Tomorrow is not going to be a $0 Day. I am taking my car to the service shop; I got a recall notice a few days ago, but I was waiting until my oil life % got low enough that they would change that when I took it in. So, I'm going to have an oil change and who knows what else. It's likely they will recommend rotating the tires and possibly an alignment. Probably the air filter, too....:sad2:

I do not know how you deal with Baton Rouge traffic! It's miserable! I'm glad to hear you are not where the flooding is.

A snowball sounded fantastic today, but I NEEDED a $0 Day!!

Yeah....I know how it feels when they offer you all this stuff for your car..It's hard to turn down when you don't know THAT much on cars and can't really check on your own if you need to get any service on it so you just get it when you're there anyways. Maybe you'll get a free car wash out of it? I know Toyota offers that.

hmm.... what did I do today? I got my Allure Beauty Box. I think it was worth it. I knew it was coming, and I did not remember everything that was in it, so as soon as I looked at everything, then I went to Walgreens with my coupons to get the other stuff I needed. Met a couple friends for a quick dinner at Chik- fil- A, which I hated . I have never been there before. I did not like their chicken.

Finished up by using my $10 gift card at Publix for pop, and paid the 70 cents overage.

I just saw a commercial for an oil change special - $9.99 for an oil change including tire rotation!

It doesn't include the disposal fee or the tire reset if needed, but that is a LOT better than what I would pay without the special! :woohoo: I will go to the dealer to get the recall part taken care of (should be free, right?) then go to this other place (Tire Kingdom) to do the oil change. I'll note any alignment issues or air filter needed, etc...but will probably decline at this point in time.

Boy am I late at getting started here. Page 7 already.
May was another failed month for tracking. As was April.:confused3. Although I stayed within my budget. Just no time to get on the computer....So, here I am trying again.

06/01 -0- Not a cool day today. Tornados ripped through my hometown and other surrounding towns and city. Only 4 miles from my home, and we got nothing.
06/02$38.00 $12.00 for lunch w/friend. $26.00 supplies for friend that has no electricity. (batteries, extra flash lights, tarp, ice,). Spent the day in town locating family and friends. Thank you God for keeping them all safe. The total loss of life was only 4. I know 4 is still to many, but, this could have been so much worse.
06/03-0- Today was just a numb day.
06/04 Approx. $30.00 on food and water. Spent the day in Springfield volunteering were ever needed. Sadly the town I was born and raised in refused our help:scared1:I think they were just overwhelmed. We don't get tornados up here. Today was an AWESOME DAY!! We just picked a house that looked like they needed help. With chain saws in hand we just jumped in.
06/05Approx $60.00 $25.00 fastfood and water. $25.00 Bought some groceries for one of our new friends. $10 ordered pizza for dinner tonight. But I got to use a $10.00 coupon. :banana:Back in Springfield for the day.We are very Blessed to have met some increditable people. This experience has forever changed my family and I.

I typed a huge post here yesterday and as soon as I was listing my days my computer crashed! So - here is a condensed version of my story. We haven't been on a budget in a long time. We all of a sudden had a ton of huge bills come at once (2X ER, dentists, taxes, tires, camp, etc) and we are also trying to save to buy a house. This past weekend I went on a Girl Scout overnight trip and came home to realize we had somehow managed to spend over $900 in 5 days!! :scared1: And that's not including the overnight - it was free, I didn't even have to pay for food.

So, here I am. Not including those first days in my budget, starting Monday the 6th. We are trying to keep our overall spending to $2,000, not including regular bills or the big expenses like the tires. I try to break it down by the week. Oh, I also don't track DH's spending money of $50/week - he already hates the budget enough, I'm not going to grill him on where that is going. I do track when he uses the debit card though.

Wish me luck, because we are not used to doing this and already, only 4 days into it, DH wants to have a party here tomorrow night! :rolleyes1

Here is our general weekly budget (we are loose on it though)
$200 - Groceries
$100 - Gas
$100 - spending ($50 each)
$100 - any extras that come up - I don't mention this part to DH though or he'd go over even more!

1-5 - $942- tons of stuff, some needed, some not

6 - $145- groceries

7 - $13 - Target (b-day present)

8 - $0!!!

9 - $23 - vet
$14 - DH mailed a present

Hi everyone! I'm new here and really need to join!! After three years with no car payments, we just got a new vehicle so that payment really changes our budget and I really need to watch things and try to figure out how/where to SAVE money so there will be a Disney trip in the future!!

DH said whatever we go underbudget I can put in our vacation fund. So far what has helped it to STAY HOME!!:lmao: Seriously....not driving by Old Navy and seeing their sale signs in the windows doesn't allow me to stop!

We are already very money conscious people...love Dave Ramsey...don't eat out hardly, don't have cable...etc...so there is no bill we can cut out.

I may need some hand holding! Thanks!:lovestruc
