Just back from BLT 2/25-3/4 Housekeeping Horror

And this is publicly known that they are doing this. So at some point a “bad guy” might get the idea to pretend to be a Disney room checker because we’re all supposed to just let them in.

This is the part that bothers me. No one at Disney thought of this? They are trading one security issue for another. Given their implementation of this policy, it would be very easy for someone to abuse this "must let us in" thing for nefarious purposes.

Is anyone else amused that Disney seems to be shooting themselves in the foot by interrupting guests in the afternoon? One of the biggest reasons mentioned here on the DIS to stay onsite is to be able to go back to your resort for a rest/nap. Especially the monorail resorts. I would much rather drive 10-15 minutes offsite and not have my nap interrupted.

I think this applies to the Epcot area resorts too. I take breaks every single day. I have had excellent experiences at the swan and dolphin resorts the last 3-4 years. No "room check" issues a few weeks ago at the dolphin. I opted out of housekeeping for SPG points. Not sure if security stopped in but I was in the room for the extended periods enjoying the view from the balcony at various times during morning and afternoon and no one knocked or came in.

I love my boardwalk DVC home resort but I may bank points and see how this works out. And I could stay a lot of nights at swandolphin for years if I sold my contract. . .

I agree with this logic. I used my DVC points for my recent stay at a BWV studio, so I decided to send an email to DVC Wednesday evening. A mature lady by the name of Joy from DVC member correspondence called yesterday am to respond to my email. She was attentive and patient. She admitted that this was a new policy and said that member feedback is helpful and appreciated as Disney gauges how the policy is handled. She said the comments are being shared up the ladder to resort management and DVC management. I gave detail of my issue of being surprised by being walked in on after not being able to hear a knock on the door. I also expressed concern for future solo trips or when our 22 year old DD travels with me but remains behind in the room. Her advice:

1. upon check in, ask to talk in person to the "manager on call" at the resort to specify a time frame for scheduling room service/security check. She suggested getting the name of the manager on call that you speak to for the sake of accountability, as this is the way she would do it if she were traveling. She likewise said you can tell the housekeeper who services your room that you want to speak to the housekeeping manager, and inform the housekeeping manager also in person when you want the daily trash removal, so that a) nothing is lost in translation and b) there is continuity when your room is serviced by different housekeepers during your stay.

2. I reported to Joy that I had several observations during my recent trip. Having stayed at 3 different DVC resorts, the handling of the new policy seemed to vary. Her response was that the goal was a uniform policy but that there was additional training is obviously needed and that this is an area where the feedback to DVC is helpful.

3. I inquired whether the new policy was implemented due to heightened concerns after the Vegas shooting. I was told yes, and also as a response to school shootings, etc., and in general to additional security in our current world. I do not think this policy is going away, but that Disney realizes the policy may need tweaking. When I asked, I was told others have contacted DVC about the policy.

4. I told Joy that I observed resort personnel other than housekeepers in the halls (not dressed in suits but obvious CM attire) and inquired if she could verify that personnel other than housekeepers were involved in the security checks. The answer was yes.

5. I inquired how I could avoid resort personnel from walking in on either my daughter or me while showering if we are alone in the room. Joy said if staff enters thinking the unit is unoccupied and hears the shower running, they will quickly leave. She said to make sure my daughter knew to place the room occupied sign up when showering.

I felt good talking to someone and knowing DVC is interested in feedback, and I still was disturbed by number 5 above. I liked Joy and she suggested that I call her directly if I have concerns in the future.

Hope this helps. Please call/email Disney and share the responses.

That all just sounds wonderful! However, #5 did not work for us. We had the room occupied sign up, but security came knocking anyway, and that was AFTER housekeeping was asked to wait a couple of hours so we could rest.

So, I doubt very much if the sign is a deterrent. We found that the only time security came was when we hung the sign up.
Sounds like they are still saying what they think we want to hear.

It seems no one knows what is really being done and the "policy" varies.

I don't think the Room Occupied sign is intended in any way to let CMs know to stay away. I think it's to let them know they should be knocking and waiting for a response before entering.

We’ve already made contact with a resale company to sell. We are using this years points next month because we are taking our daughter and her BF and my parents. My dad is livid about this. I’d bank but I don’t even want to go the next few years once toy story and Star Wars opens. The crowds this year have already been insane, I can’t imagine what’s to come. We are already planning a universal trip for 2019. I already have a list of resorts we can’t wait to try, like swan and bonnet creek once things die down.

I have rented points at Bonnet creek many, many times. We love that place.
Also stayed at Hilton Bonnet creek and the Waldorf multiple times. All good alternatives.

We've rented out our DVC points this year as I have a medical condition and can't risk having my rest disturbed or I would be unable to function or even worse, end up in hospital.
We bought our last annual pass in 2013 as we were fed up with the decline in quality and having to schedule everything in advance so resort time is important to us. If this ridiculous policy of disrespecting guests' privacy remains in place then we will be selling our three DVC contracts but I'm sure Disney won't care as there will always be more families to take our place! That is the problem with DVC, Disney doesn't have to try to please their guests as they know they have a captive audience.

We have a family trip coming up with 2 - two bedroom villas at OKW and I am a bit anxious after reading all these threads. We were at BWV in January and then SSR in February and had no issues with housekeeping or security checks.

In two weeks we will have my mother in law, for her 85th birthday as well as all us "kids" and our kids. If my mother in law decides to nap I would now not be comfortable leaving her in the villa alone - we had been able to do this the past few years without issue by using the DND. So someone is going to have to leave the pool or park to chill in the afternoons with Nana - of course we are more than happy to do this but we "shouldn't" have to . Alternately sometimes the teens like to sleep in and now I have to tell my sister in law that if her 14 and 15 year olds are asleep in the room mid morning they may also be disturbed and see if she is/they are ok with that possibility.

Ugh - next years reunion may well be off property or perhaps Universal, in part due to this potential issue as well as other issues with our MDE, Magic Bands, FP+ glitches and room reservations.

This is how I’m thinking. With the increased crowds lately, we have really started spending a lot of time at our resort. We only go to the parks a few hours. So if I can’t even have peace at my resort now, I’m done. One of the big selling points of DVC to us, other than the obvious savings, was the fact that I didn’t even have to put a DND sign on my door for at least 4 days. I’ve never in 20+trip had housekeeping in. We book split stays to avoid the complete clean. Now I have to have someone barge in every day and it’s not ok.

I wonder what would happen if you put your own sign on the door saying "there's a baby sleeping between the hours of 2-4, Please come back later".

Next time our GC is with us I may do that.
And then the guy with the arsenal puts up a similar sign and works on his guns during that time frame. Or the people making the porn film in the hotel room just work on the film during that time so they aren't disturbed. You just need to get used to the fact that there is no privacy any more at WDW resorts. The new door sign just requires that the CM knocks before entering. It is not a privacy sign by any means.

I don't need to get used to it - I don't like it so I just won't go! End of story.
There are plenty of other places to spend my money where they will respect my privacy.

I absolutely don't get the "too bad, so sad, deal with it" thinking I see from so many. There are plenty of places that don't do this. It sucks that Disney is treating people like criminals for having the nerve to want to be left in peace.

^Yes, this. I’m okay with increased privacy. I’m okay with them wanting to pop into the room once a day. I am not okay with the concept that they can dictate when this happens, with absolutely zero regards to our preferences as customers. I’m paying a rather tidy sum to stay on-site, with the aims of having a relaxing, hassle-free vacation. If I have to add an element of stress of knowing that we are subject to being interrupted and barged in on at any moment, I may well opt to swap it for the element of stress of driving to and from the parks by virtue of an offsite stay.

We have April & May trips booked and paid for, so I’ll give it a chance - but honestly, the worry of this policy being an issue is already affecting my vacation enjoyment. I am renting a room to handle my R&R needs... expecting to be disturbed by unwarranted banging on the door on a daily basis does not serve those needs. JMO.

Remember when you could walk into the MK without going through a metal detector and having your bag searched? Remember when you could get on a plane without taking off your shoes and belt? Remember when it didn't matter if you had a bottle of water in your hands as you entered the airport? Same difference. You either adjust to the times or don't go. I'd prefer that Disney set up cameras in the hallways, around the parking lots, etc. But it would be a lot of cameras and somebody would have to watch those cameras all day long. Or start profiling people and stop punishing the innocent people.

Just curious . . .Has anyone at a value or moderate tried napping with the curtains open? I mean, if we're going to have to nap fully dressed anyway in case there's a knock, I may try leaving the curtains open so they can look in the window and see what's going on in the room without having to come in. It's worth a shot, I guess. If I need that nap, I'd rather have people walking by see me sleeping than someone knocking on the door because they can't see in. It won't solve the shower/dressing issue, but even a small victory would be appreciated.
