Just booked my first RCL trip, help a DCL girl out.

Just booked a ‘last minute’ Christmas cruise on the Symphony. Wanted to go DCL, but the dates/prices didn’t work out for us. We are very familiar with Disney cruising, but this is a first Royal trip, tell me all the things I need to know, I don’t even know what to ask lol! I have 2 teens, so thought they may enjoy some of the more active things onboard. Excited to get back on any ship, as we’ve had 3 covid cancelled trips the last 18 months.

Your question is a bit hard to answer. We are DCL Platinum and RCL Diamond+ so we are familiar with both lines. However, we are older so I can't answer about things teens might like.

In general, we book RCL because the price for similar itineraries is significantly better. We usually book a suite on RCL for the price that a standard balcony cabin would be on DCL.

Both lines have good main dining rooms. DCL ships have 1 or 2 up-charge restaurants while RCL ships have at least three. RCL ships also have a casino. Each line has stage shows and smaller venues with entertainment.

Hope some of this helps

Thanks for the reply, I don’t even know what to ask, it’s so new for us lol. We booked 8 days with 2 adjoining balconies and it was still $1000 cheaper than one room for 6 nights on DCL. with My husband is worried about not knowing what is and is not included. Also wondering how the teen programming is compared to DCL, guessing you can’t answer that one. We are hoping it won’t be as crowded due to covid sailing restrictions, feels a little overwhelming to think of such a big ship. Grateful for any insider tips of what to do or how to best use our time onboard.

Yes, its likely that the ship will feel less crowded. Its hard to know just what the occupancy levels will be when you sail. Current sailings appear to be at less than 50% capacity.

It is a huge ship. That has the advantage of having lots of things like an ice skating rink where you could watch an ice show or actually skate yourself. It also has an Aqua Theater with spectacular shows. There are two interior "mall" like areas with shopping on the lower level and specialty dining on the upper levels. There is also a "boardwalk" area with some casual restaurants, shops and the aqua theater.

You may also wonder about balcony staterooms. Be aware that they have some interior balcony rooms which look out over the interior mall areas or over the aft boardwalk area. These staterooms do not have a view of the ocean if that is important to you.

Once you are on board you'll realize that even though its a huge ship, there are individual neighborhoods that make it more manageable.

yes we were sure to get an ocean view balcony, we prefer a little quiet too lol.

do you know about online check in, it says it opens November 8, do I have to stay up til midnight to get a good port arrival time? And the pay in full date isn’t until late November, can I check in if not paid in full?

Long time Disney cruiser switched to Royal for two reasons the kids grew up and the price difference between Disney and Royal.
I like the Dining better. You can book early or late or book My Time Dining.
We like My Time because you can book a different time each evening. If you have a port day and want to eat later it’s great.
Before covid you pre booked the shows. Now you can’t book until you board this makes coordinating dinner and shows a little harder. We don’t sail until early December so I’ll let you know how this works out. You can also just show up at the dining room but that’s kinda like showing up at the most popular restaurant in your town at 7pm on a Saturday night😂 you will wait to be seated. So I suggest making reservations.
The buffet was open for dinner but has been closed on most ships. I think?? I saw it’s coming back on some.
You will need to make reservations for the larger shows. The Broadway type show (Hair I think) and the Aqua show (great water and dive show a must see!!)
At this time you can’t make reservations until onboard. But keep watching your cruise info through the app to make sure this doesn’t change before your cruise.
So it is different but a lot of nice different things. Have a great cruise. There is life after Disney 😊😂💕

Kids need to get a waiver signed to do the active things. When we went it was up on the top deck by the Flowrider. Parents need to be there. It was easy but took a few minutes. Once it’s signed your good for the cruise.
No free soda. You have to buy the soda package

Yep, this is what made us decide to try, I still tear up at Sorcerer Mickey at dinner, but not sure they would. Sigh….how does the MDR food compare to Disney, we are not looking to do many upgrades to speciality dining.

My husband stayed up. The earliest was 12 noon. He was able to get this time. Our friends sailing with us didn’t do it till the next day early afternoon and got 12:30.
Our check in was October 21
And this is what is available now

Main Dining Room food about the same but the dining room is much quieter😂 For two reasons less kids and if you do the My Time because everyone isn’t seated at the same time it’s not as hectic as Disney.
I liked the buffet better. More choices and in the afternoon they had a great selection of bread and cheeses

Boarding is not as crazy as Disney. Not as many people want to get there first thing.
Disembarking is terrible. My only real complaint. They send you to different areas of the ship to wait until your group is called😡
Customs lines were long and slow. But if you payed the porters you got a shorter line.
We haven’t sailed since Covid so maybe it won’t be so bad.

I hate the buffet on Disney, I make it my goal to never set foot in there, then again I’m not much of a buffet person in general. We are booked with early dining now, but I may switch to my time.

If I can go to bed early and still get 1230 I’d be happy, I’m up at 5 for work, I’ll just try to log on then.

The only direct flight we could get home is an evening flight, so maybe we will just try to be last off the ship…I read somewhere you wait in your room now until your group is called.

I wouldn't stay up until midnight just for a good port arrival time. I'm not even sure what time RCL turns over their days in the IT area. From what I've seen their IT people are probably the same types as Disney hires. ;)

Don't know about the PIF question.

I just got off the Odyssey of the Seas and can definitely confirm that you there are about 30 or so disembarking groups and you can stay in your room until your group is called via the TV or the intercom if you choose to go to breakfast. Your group number is determined by ship area and by plans after getting off the boat (people with RC transfers to airports or RC excursions will get debark times corresponding to early/late flight departures or tour times). I live in Florida so I don't quite know the ins and outs specifically relating to flying. There were 1500 people on our sailing and disembarking was SUPER smooth and not crowded at all. It was a breath of fresh air compared to my October Dream sailing where everyone lined up in the foyer waiting to get off. Disembarking begins around 7am or so and continues until around 10:30 but they usually call groups early.

The RC app is your best friend. It'll be how you reserve spots in the Headliner shows and some of the rides. Unlike Disney right now, RC is still providing paper "Navigators" (called a cruise compass). The state room attendant didn't provide us with one until we asked for him to. You can also nab one at the Guest Services area. The main dining room does NOT have rotations. It's the same dining room every night. They have digital menus but they were very happy to provide physical ones as well.

Bathrooms aren't split bathrooms like the Dream class ships if that's what you're used to.

Be prepared for what you want to drink. There are three drink packages: soda, refreshment and deluxe. All three will get you a refillable cup you can use at the Coke Freestyle machines (a WONDERFUL improvement than the DCL stations imo). Refreshment will add bottled water, specialty coffee (NOT starbucks) and alcohol free mixed drinks. Deluxe gives you all of that plus alcohol.

The cruise planner site has "up to 35% off" sales all the time but it MIGHT NOT be the same percentage every time. It's good to keep track. You have to pay for all of your cruise planner activities UP FRONT but you can cancel it and get a refund at any time.

Crew on RC has been AMAZING and helpful. On my Adventure sailing back in June and Odyssey, they were so helpful and nice. I had app issues reserving the VR experience. I went to GS and they called the VR folks up and got us one of the last spots. They are firm about washing or sanitizing your hands and wearing a mask but they aren't mean about it.

In my opinion, the beds on RC have been way too firm for me (6'3'' male, 250 pounds). I've had to ask the room attendant to put a couple of extra duvets under the sheets to soften it up. Bring a topper if you're concerned. I'm 100% a side sleeper.

PLEASE BE SURE to keep checking back on your cruise fare. RC has been running a "Cruise with Confidence" promotion where if the cost of your room goes down AT ANY POINT (even during sales and even if you've paid in full), RC will give you credit for the difference. For example: I made a reservation on the Symphony earlier this year for the week after Thanksgiving. RC had a WOW sale earlier this year, I had my TA check for a price adjustment and I saved 300 dollars. RC just had another WOW sale last week. I asked my TA to check again and I got another 300 dollar credit. It's amazing and worth stalking your rates. It's not guaranteed to go down but you don't have to pay more if it goes up. Again, it's up to you to monitor the cost and contact them. It's not automatic.

No kids though so I can't answer any of those questions. I hope this helps!!! Have a wonderful time!!!!

Great info, thank you so much!! We just booked with that great sale last week, was able to get 2 connecting rooms for less than Disney, so we will still have 2 bathrooms. My daughter is excited not to have to sleep in the bunk bed. Do you find the drink package worth it? I’m usually a 2-3 adult beverage a day gal on vacation, could take or leave the soda, may drink a speciality coffee if offered, but could also live with the basic brew as well.

I'm glad it helped a bit! Going from DCL to RC is definitely a change but not necessarily a bad one!

The drink package is very subjective. I'm not a big alcohol drinker and when I did the math for the Deluxe package, I think I'd have to drink like 4 alcoholic drinks a day to make up the cost. That wasn't worth it to me.

I usually get the refreshment package because I nab several bottled waters a day with a few to carry around or keep in the room. I have one specialty coffee a day (by specialty I'm talking about espresso based). And even though I'm not a big soda drinker either, the Freestyle machine still has sparkling dasani, powerade, vitamin water and minute maid drinks so I filled up on those a few times a day. This one was worth it for me in addition to a soda here and there.

The regular soda package, despite including all the Freestyle drinks above, wasn't worth the cheaper price to me because of how heavily I leaned on the bottled water. I must have grabbed at least 4-5 bottle water a day. The water fountain water is fine for a lot of people.

The drinks included with the cruise fair is non-bottled water, juices, basic teas and brewed coffee (from the large carafe things). If those are good enough, then it might be more cost efficient to buy the alcohol a la carte.

I've seen this website before and it might be helpful for you! https://realworldmachine.com/travel/cruise/royal-caribbean-beverage-package-calculator/
