Last Trip? It was until we met Food & Wine -- Recap 2/12

Two quick "personal" updates and then we'll get to a trip update.

I won't know much on Alisha until she calls me...probably tomorrow (her parents are with her and aggravating her as always). I can tell you what I do know. They think she has bursitis in her hips and tendonitis in her shoulder. I know she was going back to see the joint specialist. She has to go back twice next week for an MRI and a Psych evaluation (Alisha suffers depression at times because of her mother and other family issues; they think this could be part of her pain as the "mood" spot is next to the "pain" spot in the brain). So far nothing serious...which is good. Everything else thus far can be dealt with.

Mark got a part time job today. After we sat down and talked, we decided he would NOT seek out a full time job. He has been doing this for 35 years and with us hopefully moving to Florida in 21 months or so, why start a new full time job. Mark turns 62 in January and he will take his Social Security early. He can make up to $15,000 a year (I have to doublecheck that figure) without them deducting from his SS check. He will be working at Target 20-30 hours a week. He goes for Orientation on November 8 (and gets paid for it). As of now, it is just through the holidays, but they think they'll be able to offer him something after the holidays too. This will work perfect with baseball and will keep him busy and not just sitting around the house (and he gets out of the rest of the painting for awhile).

Now a trip update, maybe even two for my wonderful DIS friends. I love you all by the way.

Finally, we were "home." Well, it's not our home, but it would be for three nights thanks to a friend at work who owns DVC and sold us her points for $5 a point. Yep, I said $5 a point. She was originally going to sell them to us for $8 a point and then she found out about Mark losing his job and insisted on selling them to us for only $5. I was flabbergasted (and got her a really nice gift to bring back to her from Disney).

So anyway, it was about 3:45 when we pulled up. Oh, I guess you want to know where home is for the next three days. Here you go:

And we were staying here:

We parked our car and walked up to the entrance. A very nice gentleman (I didn't get his name) greeted us and asked if we were checking in. I told him yes, and he escorted us into the building and brought us up to Jon. Jon is THE BEST CM I have ever encountered. But I am getting ahead of myself.

I sent Mark off to take pictures while I was getting us organized.

While Mark was doing that, Jon and I were working together and laughing and joking and having the time of our lives. Jon gave me our anniversary buttons and put 31 years on them because he said it was something definitely to be celebrated. He told me our room was ready and I had gotten my requests of a top floor and the Sunset Savannah. He asked if that was what I still wanted. I said as long as I can see "giraffes." He said, "oh don't worry, you will." :goodvibes

Jon finished giving us all of our paperwork. He asked me if I wanted to make my FP+ selections while I was with him. I told him I already had FP+. These were done by Disney. Because they extended my AP's and couldn't activate them until we got to Disney, I couldn't make my FP selections. Well, they were having none of that and put in all my requests for every day of our trip. I'm telling you major pixie dust this trip. So I told Jon the story without going into a lot of detail. He then said to me, "Honey, this is your lucky day. Those are all "special" fastpasses. You still get to choose your own 3 selections." I was speechless. Jon said, "I can tell by the number of times you've been here and by how sweet you are, that you deserve this extra pixie dust and I'm glad I am making it happen for you." I just about burst into tears. So Jon and I spent the next 20 minutes adding FP+ for all of our days. We had trouble with one with timing, so we ended up cancelling our Beaches & Cream reservation, but that was no big deal.

After blowing Jon a kiss and telling him that he was my all-time favorite CM ever, Mark and I walked back to the car and moved to the parking garage and got our luggage to take upstairs.

I immediately ran to the patio and after dropping everything and telling Mark NOT to touch anything to see what I could see. And this was our view:

I went back in the room and took pictures so my DIS friends wouldn't get mad at me.

And the reason I always want a one-bedroom villa at AKL--MY BATHROOM

Back to the bedroom

Continued in next post

We got unpacked and put the luggage away. While Mark freshened up, I went to take more pictures out on the balcony (well two balconies...with the one bedroom you have two :thumbsup2).

I now take my little reminder of Cookie with us on all my trips and left her on the bed

And we went to go downstairs to head over to Mara for dinner. We walked as we still had some time to kill before hitting our first park.

Some pictures in the AKL lobby

We arrived at Mara and ordered dinner

Mark had a burger and fries

and apple slices

and for dessert a Chocolate Chip Muffin

I had the chicken fingers and fries

We finished dinner and it started drizzling a bit. So we walked quickly back to Kidani and went up to the room to get our ponchos and then got in the car and drove to our first park.

Up next, drinks, a DIS Meet and Frozen Fireworks

Wow I can't believe how many pages into this TR you are at. So sorry about the sad news you got while on vacation and then once you got back. Hooray on Marks new pt job.

Wow! What an amazing view you got in your room. And I agree that is quite the bathroom. :cool1: for the extra bit of pixie dust you got with FP+. Sounds like a great beginning to a trip:goodvibes

LOL I think I will nickname you two Kellie and Kyle with your burger and chicken nuggets. I think I have stepped back in time. :rotfl2:

You had a gorgeous view of the animals. And I can almost smell the scent of the lobby now. So homesick.

Congrats to Mark on his part-time job!! :cool1: Guys just get too squirrely sitting at home. :coffee: Very happy for both of you that something came along.

Wishing only good news for Alisha. And hoping you get some good news for your mother as well. And sending prayers to your friend Joe.

Kathy, I am so sorry to hear about your mother. I hope she reacts well to the treatment.
And I am equally saddened by the news on your son's friend. I have been following their blog ever since you first posted about them and had so wished and prayed for a good outcome. It breaks my heart to read their updates.
Still keeping my fingers crossed for Alisha.

Great news on Mark! Congratulations!
And more great news on the birth of your great niece. She is a cutie! :goodvibes

Okay, back to your update.
Now, check in sounds like it went perfectly well and I am so loving the pixie dust that you received at check in. :woohoo:
The view from your balcony is just amazing. Not to forget that we so with you, when it comes to renting a 1 bedroom - can't beat the space you get and bathrooms are amazing. :thumbsup2

Must not forget - one of the sweetest things is your little reminder of Cookie. How cute that you take her with her.

That's great news about the part time job! I would love to work at Target as I could spend hours on that store ;) What a fantastic CM you found at AKL, he sounds like a real angel. To get all your FP+ taken care of like that is just magical. Also the $5 a point is unreal so happy for you to have gotten such a deal especially with everything going on in your life. Onto the food, The Mara is one of my favorite QS spots! They have this African stew that is out of this world.

Well first of all, congratulations to Mark on the new job!! That's such great news. :)
Hoping for good news on all other fronts as well.

Oh wow, AKL is amazing and gorgeous but wow, that one bedroom villa is awesome! Love that bathroom especially.

Fantastic view!

Great news about the part time job for Mark. When Denny retires do you think I'll be able to get him to take a part time job???? Please!!!!! Seriously - I hope he loves it there. I don't blame him one bit for not wanting a full time job.

WOW - $5 a point. That is amazing. Even $8 a point is amazing. That is cheaper than owning. Love the 1 BR. I wish we could splurge on that, but I don't think it will ever happen. Boo!

Love, love, love the view and the extra special pixie dust in the form of FPs. :thumbsup2

luvin the updates. Yay for even more fastpasses. :thumbsup2 Congrats to Mark as well on the part time job.

That whole deal with Alisha is heartbreaking. I'm so very hopeful her condition improves.

Finally some good news Kathy (I think you've earned it)!!! That is great news with the part time work. Absolutely makes sense not to go all in if you plan to move. But my goodness, all I ever hear about in the States is Target (we've has them here for about a year, but they're not doing so well) so it almost sounds like a dream job, lol. Congratulations to Mark! Sounds like a perfect situation.

Say... that view looks just like mine at my offsite hotel. Ok, maybe not..

Oh wow, one of my favourite things is hearing stories about great CM's. And boy does Jon qualify!!! Plus the fact that he actualy said "pixie dust" makes me like him even more. Such a beautiful story. Now that's how you start a Disney vacation.

Oh my GOD that room is wonderful. Plus... GIRAFFE!!!!

Good for Mark with the PT job! Hopefully it works out and he can keep it up after the holidays. Maybe there is even transfer possibilites when you move to Florida? Plus yay for Target Discounts (he should see if this extends to the Disney gift cards.....juuuuust sayin')! I have been thinking of getting a PT job there just because I feel my entire paycheck goes to them!

I will keep Alisha in my thoughts still. I am hoping for some good news on her end. Seems like you are all in an "up" trend so I am sending some positive continuation vibes that way!

That is good news about Mark's part-time job. I hope this is the start of some brightness in your life!

:goodvibes

Wow! What amazing pixiedust: pixie dust from Jon! :cheer2:

If you haven't done it yet, definitely send a letter/email to Disney and if you can, especially the resort general manager. It really does make a difference when guests compliment a CM who showed them special kindness.

AKL/AKV looks like an amazing resort. I have only been to the lobby of the lodge on the way to Boma, but I am always impressed with how beautiful it is. The rooms are incredible too. Love your pictures!

Speaking of pictures- are these all taken with your new camera?

:thumbsup2

I hope Alisha gets the relief she needs.

Congrats to Mark with his PT job! I worked for Target as seasonal help years ago and it really was a good job. I thought for retail, Target took care of their people. The discount is nice too. :)

Jon really is the best CM ever! What awesome pixie dust! Way to kick off your trip.

Jill in CO

Oh boy, you have me tearing up with your "stuffed Cookie" :littleangel: on your pillow picture. How I wish we had one of Simon and of Holly for Cass. :sad1: That is so sweet. I can still smell his scent on his blanket and every time I do, I burst into tears. Don't know what I will do if the scent ever goes away.

What a beautiful view from your room and congratulations on the pixie dust! Nothing like having a permanent smile from ear to ear on your face for the rest of the day - as if you weren't already beaming from just being at Disney to begin with. As soon as that plane touches down and that first palm tree is spotted... hello perma grin!! :teeth: There's nothing like it.

I'm thrilled for Mark securing a part time job and SO agree that he has "done his time". I feel the same way about my Mark, but as he says, "he'll retire to his grave". Live to work and work to live. My sympathy to you about your mom. You are all in my prayers. I'm sure Alisha will be just fine once the right medication is figured out. I know it can be frustrating. Sounds like she needs a hug - bless her. And, oh my gosh, what an adorable baby!!! I just want to pinch (gently) those little cheeks. Love her! Had to snicker at your, "dysfunctional family" comment. Can relate to that, yup.

Looking forward to reading more, especially since you've said it may be one of your best trips yet. Wow!

So sorry to hear the news about your Mom, Kathy - I will keep her in my prayers for a full recovery and that she goes through treatment well. So sad to hear about your son's friend - praying for his wife and family. Such an adorable grand niece! I agree with everyone - what a perfect name!

Such great news about Mark - I agree that working part time seems perfect especially since he will be turning 62 before too long and can still work part time and coach. Things happen for a reason (which I don't always understand but they do). I'm 61 and interviewed for Disneyland Reservation Agent in March this year but was put on a wait list then turned down. Well yesterday I received an invitation to come in for another interview. I think the position is part time but CM's I've spoken with say you usually get a min of 38 hours plus commission. So maybe things will work in my favor this time around.

Loved that you got the best CM ever for your stay at AKL! You and Mark truly deserve tons of pixie dust! Such a beautiful room and the view is amazing  Can't wait to read more! You guys are the bomb (as my grandson says lol He says it's a good thing lol)!

You are just too sweet.
 Back at ya Kathy! Glad your Mom is responding well :thumbsup2 Sorry Alisha has to deal with drama..that ALWAYS affects how we feel. I had to separate from my parents to stay healthy and sane. Bless her that she has fab in laws that are the bestest :lovestruc

:cool1: for Mark! My MIL works at Target and woohoo for her employee discount. He will get all the hours he wants until January guaranteed! I hope he gets a great group of coworkers!!! :dance3:

I LOVE CM Jon!!! As much as I love your villa!!! He was wise enough to recognize how awesome you & Mark are...and  love little Cookie :lovestruc

Wow I can't believe how many pages into this TR you are at. So sorry about the sad news you got while on vacation and then once you got back. Hooray on Marks new pt job.

Thank you so much.

Wow! What an amazing view you got in your room. And I agree that is quite the bathroom. :cool1: for the extra bit of pixie dust you got with FP+. Sounds like a great beginning to a trip:goodvibes

It was a great view and that bathroom is out of this world (I may have more pictures later); love the Jacuzzi tub. It was a great start to the trip.

LOL I think I will nickname you two Kellie and Kyle with your burger and chicken nuggets. I think I have stepped back in time. :rotfl2:

:rotfl::rotfl: yes, we were kind of boring that night.

You had a gorgeous view of the animals. And I can almost smell the scent of the lobby now. So homesick.

Love that smell in the lobby.

Congrats to Mark on his part-time job!! :cool1: Guys just get too squirrely sitting at home. :coffee: Very happy for both of you that something came along.

He's quite happy about it. And it gives him a reason to take a break from painting, cleaning the garage, etc. :rotfl2:

Wishing only good news for Alisha. And hoping you get some good news for your mother as well. And sending prayers to your friend Joe.

Thanks, Linda. I'm actually going to see Alisha tomorrow. Markie is coming to Chicago to recruit and Alisha and Rolo are coming to hang with me. :)

Thanks, Karin. She's now on a blood thinner because her heart is a little wacky and they don't want her to develop a clot. I hear you; I'm always afraid what Amanda's next post will be.

Great news on Mark! Congratulations!

I'm happy he got something. And he is good at sales and with people so this is perfect for him.

And more great news on the birth of your great niece. She is a cutie! :goodvibes

Yes she is. :)

Okay, back to your update.
Now, check in sounds like it went perfectly well and I am so loving the pixie dust that you received at check in. :woohoo:

It was wonderful.

The view from your balcony is just amazing. Not to forget that we so with you, when it comes to renting a 1 bedroom - can't beat the space you get and bathrooms are amazing. :thumbsup2

It's not something we can afford every time, but do love that bathroom.

Must not forget - one of the sweetest things is your little reminder of Cookie. How cute that you take her with her.

Awww...thanks; I still miss her every single day and I've had that for several years and she just has to be with me now.

Sent from my iPhone using DISBoards

Thanks, Lori. I understand he will be getting a discount too. :) Jon was an angel and I let him know it. Mary, the gal I work with, is very sweet. Mark was going to get the African stew but he decided he was in the mood for a burger. We will be sure he tries it next time.

Well first of all, congratulations to Mark on the new job!! That's such great news. :)

Thanks, Wendy. We are happy.

Hoping for good news on all other fronts as well.

Me too!

Oh wow, AKL is amazing and gorgeous but wow, that one bedroom villa is awesome! Love that bathroom especially.

It's such a gorgeous resort.

Fantastic view!

I was like a little kid when I saw my giraffes.

Oh, congratulations on Mark's new job! That is fantastic! And who doesn't like Target?

I'm glad Alisha is getting some answers. I hope they are able to help relieve her pain.

Okay, LOVE your view at AKL. Someday I'd love to stay there. Such a beautiful place. I can see why you like the bathroom so much!

What an awesome awesome CM. That's a great way to start your trip.

Looking forward to your first park visit!

Great news about the part time job for Mark. When Denny retires do you think I'll be able to get him to take a part time job???? Please!!!!! Seriously - I hope he loves it there. I don't blame him one bit for not wanting a full time job.

Mark and I are both too active to not do something. Denny might find it boring being home 24/7.

WOW - $5 a point. That is amazing. Even $8 a point is amazing. That is cheaper than owning. Love the 1 BR. I wish we could splurge on that, but I don't think it will ever happen. Boo!

I usually pay $12 a point through a former DIS member (I think Dave's DVC charges $14 or $15 so I know how lucky I am.

Love, love, love the view and the extra special pixie dust in the form of FPs. :thumbsup2

Thanks; it was a great start to the trip.

luvin the updates. Yay for even more fastpasses. :thumbsup2 Congrats to Mark as well on the part time job.

Thanks, Emma. It was an awesome way to start the trip, and I'm very happy for Mark.

That whole deal with Alisha is heartbreaking. I'm so very hopeful her condition improves.

I won't even go into the shenanigans of her mother and sister today. I seriously want to slap the woman. Alisha just called me and the first thing she said "yay...I'm talking to my good momma." Warmed my heart, but also was distressing because her mother is such a.....I will be nice.

I think it will be perfect for him and hopefully they'll continue to need him after season. I'm surprised they aren't doing well by you. We have Wal-Mart too and I refuse to step in those.

Say... that view looks just like mine at my offsite hotel. Ok, maybe not..

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:; we did get Stacy if that helps.

Oh wow, one of my favourite things is hearing stories about great CM's. And boy does Jon qualify!!! Plus the fact that he actualy said "pixie dust" makes me like him even more. Such a beautiful story. Now that's how you start a Disney vacation.

I was blown away by him. Jon is literally the BEST CM ever that we've encountered.

Oh my GOD that room is wonderful. Plus... GIRAFFE!!!!

Isn't it? I LOVE giraffes (Mark gets upset because you can't see the elephants :rotfl2:).

Katie, I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps he can transfer when we are ready to move to Florida. That would be perfect. Looking forward to the discounts. I'll have to check on the Disney gift cards. If nothing else, I guess now I better get a Red card.

I will keep Alisha in my thoughts still. I am hoping for some good news on her end. Seems like you are all in an "up" trend so I am sending some positive continuation vibes that way!

Thanks for the positive vibes!

That is good news about Mark's part-time job. I hope this is the start of some brightness in your life!

Thanks, Dee. I hope so too.

Wow! What amazing pixiedust: pixie dust from Jon! :cheer2:

It still amazes me two weeks later.

If you haven't done it yet, definitely send a letter/email to Disney and if you can, especially the resort general manager. It really does make a difference when guests compliment a CM who showed them special kindness.

It was the first thing I did when I got home (I also wrote about another CM that went above and beyond that you'll hear about later in the trip. I will send an email to the General Manager too...good idea.

AKL/AKV looks like an amazing resort. I have only been to the lobby of the lodge on the way to Boma, but I am always impressed with how beautiful it is. The rooms are incredible too. Love your pictures!

I know you love your BC, but you really should try it sometime. It's simply stunning.

Speaking of pictures- are these all taken with your new camera?

:thumbsup2

Most of them are with my new camera (which I LOVE); a few are from my phone.

I hope the additional MRI's provide even more answers for Alisha and I am glad that at least so far it seems like things that can be dealt with. That must be tough for your family (or at least some members of it) to be causing issues when they should be the ones doing all they can to lessen issues. Will definitely continue to pray for her

Yeah for Mark getting a job! Your thinking makes a ton of sense to me and I would think that those 20-30 hours a week at Target plus the umpiring at times during the year will definitely keep him busy enough but also let him spend time on other things! Congratulations!

What a great start to the trip! John sounds amazing and that really is the Disney touch that you love CMs for - such wonderful pixie dust! (and I agree with John - you definitely deserve to celebrate 31 years!) And yeah for getting your room request and for it being ready :yay:

So, um, yeah, I guess you might get to see a giraffe at some point during your stay :rotfl2:

Oh my, that bathroom is huge! I tend to love all lighting features at Disney, but AKL really hit the motherload with amazing light fixtures.
