Making Lemonade from Lemons.

Hello! Wow, your photos are incredible! And I love seeing your report from the "Covid" perspective. We leave for Florida 1 week from tomorrow and your pictures are making my family and I even more excited! So cool you got upgraded/switched to the Contemporary. WE got upgraded from CBR to Beach Club and are really excited. I look forward to reading more adventures!

Our next stop was another new experience for us - Mickey's Runaway Railway. As a major movie buff and lover of the old classics, I adored The Great Movie Ride. It was also a favorite of Yia-Yia's and Alex's so I was very sad to see it go. I also took some great photos of the ride over the years...

My favorite non-Star Wars movie...

DSC07427-X2.jpg

Not in Kansas anymore.

DSC07446-X3.jpg

Unfortunately, also not in Orlando anymore. So I wasn't thrilled to hear TGMR was heading the way of the Dodo bird. I had very high standards and expectation for what was going to replace it. We made our way towards the Chinese Theater to ride this newcomer Mickey's Runaway Railway with great trepidation.

20200721-DSC08712-X3.jpg

Because of social distancing and the demand for this ride (it was to be our longest wait of the trip), the line extended well outside the theater. Not too long after we took our position I was greeted by a hello from our Disney friends. He and his family were on another mission (I think Tower of Terror?) but he saw us and thankfully came over. His family of 4 conversed with our matching set for a few minutes and I thought it would be great to take a photo. I asked the gentleman in front of me if he would oblige, but then regretting that under the Covid world social norms we are told to follow. I apologized and gave him an "out" but he decided to go ahead with my request. I'm so happy he did!

We looked like a bank robber gang but it was great fun!

20200721-DSC08710-X3.jpg

We continued to talk and compare notes and realized that Bill and I had planned out the first 4 days of park experience identically. So much so that the kids thought we were in cahoots. They soon left us but with a promise to meet up again! I could tell Val was starting to really enjoy this.

We continued to progress in our line until at some point we stopped moving. They shut things down for 20 minutes or so to clean and sanitize the ride vehicle. This would popup occasionally during the week. Toni was being impatient and wanted to bail on waiting. Sterg was starting to be swayed. After seeing a number of people leave their spot in line I made the argument that we should stick it out and once they reopened things would move along quickly. Luckily for us, I won that argument.

Some outside photos...

20200721-DSC08713-X3.jpg

"Hi there."

20200721-DSC08714-X3.jpg

Surprised it took as long as it did for Sterg to get in the limelight.

20200721-DSC08715-X3.jpg

These masks are not conducive to showing off their $multi-thousand straight teeth their crooked toothed father ponied up for.

20200721-DSC08717-X3.jpg

But I still love them.

20200721-DSC08718-X3.jpg

getting closer...

20200721-DSC08720-X3.jpg

"What's up Pops?" Sterg blurts.

20200721-DSC08725-X3.jpg

Closer still...

SPOILER ALERT - Mickey's Runaway Railway

Finally inside. So far not much has changed.
20200721-DSC08728-X3.jpg

Except for the 6 foot distance markers on the carpet.
20200721-DSC08729-X3.jpg

Entering the loading area,

20200721-DSC08730-X3.jpg

Now EVERYTHING has changed!

20200721-DSC08731-X3.jpg

and we're off into a crazy, zany new world of animated 3-D fun!

20200721-DSC08732-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08733-X3.jpg

The ride vehicles were "trackless" and as much as I liked them in Rise of the Resistance, I thought it fit this ride even better and was very well executed.

Each room you entered was its own cartoon world and what you can't see in these still photos are the movement of the objects and the dimensions. At first your visual sense are overloaded. The colors are bright and things are moving that normally shouldn't be moving. It took me a while to adjust to this new "world" but it was delightful to experience.

20200721-DSC08734-X3.jpg

Mixed in were animatronics brought to life through movement and projections (think Frozen ride), to tell the simple story of Mickey and Minnie (trying) going on a picnic.

20200721-DSC08735-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08739-X3.jpg

Plenty of detours along the way.

20200721-DSC08740-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08741-X3.jpg

Things were happening everywhere you looked!

SPOILER ALERT - Mickey's Runaway Railway (CONT.)

You are submerged in color and light and music and action while your brain is scrambling to make sense of all of it. We're not quite sure what we're experiencing here but we do know we like it!

We even had a near miss with at tornado! This was an awesome effect. The tornado was "real" with video mapping over-laid on top.

20200721-DSC08749-X3.jpg

And speaking of submerged, Mickey and Minnie ran into some trouble here. It's hard to explain but the 3D effect worked great and you felt a sense of danger as their paddling couldn't stop them from heading over the falls,

20200721-DSC08752-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08753-X3.jpg

and end up here...

20200721-DSC08754-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08756-X3.jpg

The movement of all these fish was captivating. You wanted more time to take it all in.

20200721-DSC08758-X3.jpg

but alas, the quick moving vehicles kept us on a brisk pace.

Next up -

20200721-DSC08760-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08762-X3.jpg

We all thoroughly enjoyed Daisy's Dance Studio (especially Toni)!

20200721-DSC08761-X3.jpg

As you can see in the mirror, Toni was very much following instruction, Sterg not so much. Val was trying to figure out what exactly was going on (as were most people) while I, of course, was capturing photos. Again, I wish we had a little more time with Daisy.

20200721-DSC08763-X3.jpg

Now what? Looks like our favorite mouse couple are in trouble again!

20200721-DSC08765-X3.jpg

SPOILER ALERT - Mickey's Runaway Railway - Cont.

Not looking good. Let's see if we can help.

20200721-DSC08766-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08767-X3.jpg

Do the make carousels in here? See what I mean by zany?

20200721-DSC08769-X3.jpg

"The Smasher" definitely NOT good!

20200721-DSC08768-X3.jpg

Wait, what are you guys doing in there?

20200721-DSC08770-X3.jpg

And why are we getting closer??
20200721-DSC08771-X3.jpg

Another "3D" effect that worked in giving you the illusion of impending flattening of your skull.

But we along with our heroes escape!

To a much nicer place. There's that carousel.

20200721-DSC08772-X3.jpg

With Goofy behind the controls we should have know this was going to be nutz-o!

20200721-DSC08774-X3.jpg

Happy ending!

20200721-DSC08777-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08779-X3.jpg

and birds chirping!

20200721-DSC08784-X3.jpg

I can tell you coming off that ride, I was definitely not thinking about how much I missed The Great Movie Ride. Mickey's Runaway Railway is so different, so much fun with an excitable pace and a great display of the next/new generation of Disney's ride technology. Sign me up for 100 more rides please!

UP NEXT - dancing out of Hollywood Studios and Dinner at the Poly!

I started reading your report this morning. I was scrolling along and then I saw your picture of Wally! My son played lacrosse with Wally Jr. at Cabrini and they were roommates there. Your description of Wally was spot on! I could just hear his big, booming voice making fun of your Disney obsession! On another note, I am enjoying reading your report and looking at your pictures which are gorgeous!

I reminded Sterg and Toni of the days we would rope drop DHS and dash to the TSMM fastpass machine (which had a 10 minute line), grab fastpasses then hope to get in the standbye line with less than an hour wait.

I remember those days! Good times! My family thought I was crazy 🤪

Actually after a few seconds of juggling my camera and pulling the string on my gun I realized the absurdity of it (plus I was losing to Val) and put down the camera until the end.

Good idea, you definitely need bth hands on that ride!

Toni fell asleep on my shoulders dressed in her Ariel Bippity-Bobbity outfit after a long day in the parks. We were in the Great Movie Ride Queue for our last ride of the night.

DSCN1020-X2.jpg

Aw, sweet 🥰

I miss that area still.

and I loved the singing in the rain umbrella!

Definitely the color pic ::yes::

Heck, I even managed to get in a shot!

20200721-DSC08679-X3.jpg

Finally! I'm the same way, although I'm just the picture taker and not a photographer like you.

We looked like a bank robber gang but it was great fun!

20200721-DSC08710-X3.jpg

Awesome that you got to meet and someone was nice enough to take this!

I could tell Val was starting to really enjoy this.

Yay! :cool1:

I literally just read this while watching Toy Story on a yucky day here in CT, and your TSL pictures make me so happy. I can't wait to get back there!

Also, I totally skipped your last update about MMRR since I'm trying to avoid spoilers until we get there!

Amazing report! I can’t believe you were able to get on all those headliners, some more then once so easily! People used to plan their trips around getting one ride on some of those! Truly wonderful, and your pictures are beautiful. I’m visiting in late November and I hope crowds are like this then. I was very upset about TGMR also, so I have some bitter feelings towards Runaway Railroad but it does look great.

I miss GMR too, but we are so excited about Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railroad! And your pictures and review make it seem that much better. I'm so glad it didn't disappoint.

Loving this! Trying to decide about a September trip, but the idea of the heat and the masks, ugh! Were they cranking the AC in the lines?

Great Photos!! Especially at "Be our Guest" & also the ghosts.

Thank you @DHare!

Hello! Lol.

Thank you! It was certainly an unique trip. Have a great trip! Saw you got the upgrade in your report - Beach Club is our favorite resort!

That's Crazy!!!

Proving once again that's It's a Small World After All!

We were with the Wally and his crew last night and shared this. They were amazed and told me how great your son is and your entire family!

So Funny!

Thank you!

Happy I could add some positive vibe to a gloomy day!

I think you'll really like MMRR.

I binged your report to date and am loving it! Your photos are incredible! :)

Thank you and thanks for reading!

Thanks! Yes, it was somewhat surreal going through the empty parks.

Hope you have a great trip in November. I do miss TGMR and this is something completely different but it is fun!
I miss GMR too, but we are so excited about Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railroad! And your pictures and review make it seem that much better. I'm so glad it didn't disappoint.

Yes, I'm guessing you're going to really like it!

Thank you @DanaHesson !
Mask were no fun but I found myself getting used to them by day 3. Yes, AC was on whenever inside.
Thanks for the updates! I am really enjoying seeing the parks through your camera lens! :wizard: It looks like Val was having a good time, too!

Thank you! Yes, the more the trip went on the more fun she had!

The last time we were in DHS was summer of 2017. Before Toy Story Land, Before Galaxy's Edge and during the time Great Movie Ride was being converted into Mickey's Runaway Railway. We spent 3 or 4 hours in the park during our stay and it felt enough. The park has transformed itself and is now a full day, multi day destination. You could spend an entire day exploring GE or better yet going back and forth between GE and Toy Story Land. Once things get back to normal (and they will), you add in Fantasmic, Beauty and the Beast stage show, Indiana Jones stunt plus fireworks/night time show and it covers all the bases. We had a blast despite those reductions and without enjoying the beauty of the park lit up at night.

Great job Disney! Looks like you spent those $billion well. Here's hoping you get your investment back sooner rather than later!

Toni had such a great time she left the park clicking her heels and dancing!

thumbs up from everyone on the way out.

I got an opportunity to take photos of the Skyliner. I never got a chance to ride in one but Val, Toni and Alex would later in the trip.

20200721-DSC08792-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08795-X3.jpg

Pretty empty bus stop. This was around 6:30.

20200721-DSC08797-X3.jpg

On the way back. Notice the plastic partitions between seats. Every seat had a number on it. I think 1 to 5 (or 6). As you entered the bus you/your group were assigned a number and told to sit in the seats with your number on it. There were also seats designated as "Not Available" to allow for proper distancing. You can see those to the right of Toni.
Standing on the bus was not allowed.

20200721-DSC08798-X3.jpg

We came back to our room and unpacked our delivery from Garden Grocer which included this Covid Stress relief kit. (Actually, the vodka was from the Markplace in the Contemporary.)

20200721-DSC08799-X3.jpg

Sterg enjoying a drink on the balcony.

20200721-DSC08800-X3.jpg

We made last minute plans to have dinner at Kona at 8:15pm so we scrambled to have all of us shower and get ready in time to grab the monorail for our quick trip.
The only problem was, when we went to get on the monorail we found out it had shutdown for the night! Now does that make any sense? Yes, Magic Kingdom was closed but if you're going to have the resort restaurants on the loop open late you should have the monorail on the loop also open. We were not too happy about that. Plan B was grabbing an Uber which we did.

20200721-DSC08802-X3.jpg

It was nice to be back at the Poly. My favorite trip may have been our 2013 trip when we stayed here. I still like the Beach and Yacht Club better but the Poly remains a very special place.

We explored the new lobby for a few minutes. Still like the old one better.

20200721-DSC08835-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08836-X3.jpg

Time to go upstairs. We had to wait until past 8:30 to be seated so I took a few snaps.

Quick one of Toni. The official record here is that she's holding a drink in her other hand.

20200721-DSC08812-X3.jpg

and we were finally seated.

20200721-DSC08817-X3.jpg

Our waiter at Kona was nothing special. First he was hard to understand and even more so talking through a mask and a plastic face shield; then he was wearing black plastic gloves that were half covered by his long sleeves. I couldn't hear much of what he was saying and felt I had to continuously ask him to repeat himself.

We ordered a couple sushi plates to get us started. They were expensive yet tasty but I got the feeling I was continuously being watched.

20200721-DSC08818-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08819-X3.jpg

Not a fan of the "eyeball" presentation at all.

20200721-DSC08820-X3.jpg

Didn't seem to bother Sterg who ordered a frozen type of drink.

20200721-DSC08822-X3.jpg

Val order some kind of tuity-fruity drink...

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200721205855320_COVER-X2.jpg

And I think this was a Kona version of a bourbon Old Fashion. So far, so good.

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200721205851362_COVER-X2.jpg

I can't remember what everyone else ordered. They were happy with their meal. I order the special - Salmon Steak and frankly I was underwhelmed. It tasted like the salmon was put on a metal plate and thrown in the boiler for 10 minutes. No seasoning, sauce or glaze. Kinda expected more for my $40.

Our incoherent waiter in his hazmat suit did surprisingly agree to take our photo. Perhaps it looked in focus behind the plastic shielding and his thick glasses.

20200721-DSC08826-X3.jpg

Everyone was very satisfied with their meal except me. I had told myself going in that I was going to order the steak - everyone raves about the steak at Kona. Somehow I ended up falling for the "Chef Special" salmon and I was disappointed. I know I talked about this before in one of my other trip reports, but here I go again because it's good advise that I didn't follow that night;

When you go to a steak house - order the steak
When you go to a seafood house - order fish (or lobster)

The point being, go with what the restaurant is know for, what they do best. Kona is known for their steak and I knew that and was prepared to order it but changed my mind at the table and paid the price of regret.

After dinner we decided to explore the Poly before heading back. I of course took some more photos.

This was a sad sight.

20200721-DSC08828-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08827-X3.jpg

Then we ventured outside to the pool area.

20200721-DSC08833-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08830-X3.jpg

20200721-DSC08832-X3.jpg

Not exactly sure what Toni was doing here.

20200721-DSC08831-X3.jpg

We then order an Uber and made our way outside for the pickup.

Amazingly, the Uber driver covering Walt Disney World didn't really know how to go from the Poly to the Contemporary - even with GPS. We spent almost a half hour in his car changing directions and doing Uturns. OK then.
I think we could have walked back quicker.

After that adventure we made it back to the room and called it a night. Our favorite park from last trip was up on deck and we were excited to get to Animal Kingdom in the morning.

Overall, this was one of our best days at WDW we ever had. The next day may have actually topped it.

UP NEXT - Animal Kingdom overload and many more photos and videos.
