Mickey Head Luggage

I'm glad this thread came up again. I got the silver Donald and Minnie Heys pieces at TJ Maxx--never have found the carry on.
Anyway, we're flying on Airtran. The big one is 1/2 inch too big, and I don't want to pay extra for oversized luggage. (60" for Airtran. My big Minnie is 60 1/2".)
Any way around this? How close do they check? Should I just take a chance?
