Today is the 25th NALC/USPS national food drive. It is the largest 1 day food drive in the US. If you can please leave non-perishable food in/near your mailbox and your letter carrier will pick it up. The food stays in your community, going to a local food bank or pantry. Last year a record 80.1 million pounds of food was collected, bringing the 25 year total to 1.5 billion pounds. Thanks for your help. If this is against any board rules moderator please delete.

This is really great. Do the volunteer at the food bank a favour and check the dates on what you put out. You wouldn't believe how much we have to throw away because is is years old, people clean out their pantry and send it out. Truly a great thing to give to those in need.

Also, please don't give items that are basically useless to those in need. Fancy dip mixes that require cream cheese or sour cream; cake mixes, strange condiments, gourmet popcorn toppings, oddball delicacy items from Williams-Sonoma, pink Himalayan sea salt, etc.

Besides expired food, people also clear out all those unwanted items they received as Christmas gifts. Or things that looked good in the store but then never used at home.

My bag is out. Rode through the neighborhood a few minutes ago and there were no other bags out to be picked up. :(

The food pantry my MIL works at has something they call the "gourmet box" where they put this stuff. People coming in to pick up regular food packages can also take up to a certain number of items out of here. That way they choose what they can actually use.

We only saw one besides ours.

DD robotics team spent the afternoon sorting and helping at the local post office. They were only suppose to work from 12-3 but were asked to stay later, so 3 turned into 6.

We set ours out and the mailman didn't take it. He put another paper bag in our mailbox. ???????

So we thought he was going to come back around after deliveries were made but he never did.

Wow and what do we do with the money donated .....go out and buy the same canned goods someone donated. Shoppers go out and look for the sales. Money is always good that would pay for non perisihables . Our food back is on the smaller side so there is no big warehouse somewhere, we have volunteers do the work. It's like a mini store so they are not just eating cream corn they can pick a veggie they like. We love the big school food drives it gets through Thanksgiving, Christmas , Easter. and one final one just before summer and the kids are out.

We do an odd and ends shelves too and they can come pick out something on there, if food is close to expiring they can pick out of that box too .

We never give anything we already have. We just go to the store and purchase items specifically for our food bag. I hate when people just donate crap they don't like or don't want any more.

In our area the bags aren't being picked up by the carrier who is delivering the mail. It's being done by volunteers/off duty mail carriers. So it doesn't get picked up the same time as the mail gets delivered.

Our numbers were down a little this year probably because it rained all day. My office collected 30,000 pounds of food, a little more than a tractor trailer full. We usually pick up another 500-1000 lbs throughout the next week. Thanks to everyone who donated or helped.
