Need opinions: Teens sporting question

When was that? Because things have changed a lot.
They have. I've been out of youth sports for over 10 years. I shot an e-mail to a Coach who is still active.
The big traveling/team sports teams for baseball, soccer and football not affiliated with high school have all folded in the last five years here so high school is the only option.
But this is an area with a huge decline in the number of kids. I've lost track of how many schools have closed in the last five years. He says that is the biggest factor. The other biggie is parents just not willing to pay what non-school programs cost. And a little political infighting too.

@NotUrsula -

We are just a rec program so the seniors get introduced at the yearly recital in March before their solo. The show is group songs with learn to skate USA groups and all skaters over a certain level get to do a solo. In terms of high school, the high school team is coached by a teacher from our high school. She personally gives out the US Figure Skating Achievement Certificate at senior awards night for all skaters from our school (which has been 1 senior a year for 3 years) though the sports director would if she couldn't make it. Our high school also gives the team a yearbook page, announces competitions and wins etc but the skating team doesn't count for most sports scholarship or for gym exemption. It is kind of funny that as soon as teachers who don't know my daughter hear her name they know she skates. As my youngest has met some high school teachers they hear her last name and immediately ask if she skates. She starts high school in the fall. I like that your seniors get a solo. We have to audition. Last year DD was very disappointed when she only got a duet but went to speak to our (now former) skating director who gently explained the selection process and she was ok. I was really hoping they would change it with the new director that all seniors got a solo if they wanted one but I don't see that happening now.

@Nancy O I don't feel like you've spread drama and I think it has been handled well. Thank you :flower3:

It depends on who you ask. (And I agree there can be some infighting.)

Like i said, not an option in my immediate area. The clubs all folded.
How large is your "immediate" area? I find it hard to believe there's no soccer, baseball, or softball clubs within about 15-20 minutes.

None. But the other issue there is those programs have borders or high schools they draw from as set by their national organizations, so if you don't live in the right place or go to the right school, you can't be on their team.

Really? A quick Google search came up with 4 or 5 soccer clubs in the Sacramento area, all seemingly going strong.
Yes, but I live in Carmichael. We used to have 4 clubs just in Carmichael

These came up in a search for "Carmicheal Soccer clubs"

Here's baseball & a quick google search:

And from https://www.maidull.org/travelball
The following is a list of teams that may have local Roseville representation and may even host practices and other events at fields also used by Maidu Little League.

  • 54s
  • Paragon
  • Oorah!
  • Golden Spikes
  • D1 Sports Academy
  • NorCal Scorpions
  • Golden Era Baseball
  • Roseville Sun Devils

First two are rec. My daughter played in the Carmichael Soccer Club
Cap Valley is the only open one on your whole lsit.

Scorpions and Maidu are in another city and county

One is still more than 'none'. We only have one in our town. But there are 6 others within a 30 minute drive.

What, 30 minutes from Carmichael? So none of your HS baseball, softball, or soccer players play club. They all only play HS?

Kids in our area (Mississippi Gulf Coast) that want to play travel for the competitive level and the college exposure will drive an hour to find a travel team. DD has kids who live 45 minutes away on her team. There are 2 teams in my town. I am sure we have several between New Orleans and Mobile that they could choose from.

I am mostly familiar with soccer, but I know there are travel softball, baseball and volleyball teams.

I would imagine that most areas (that are not very rural and spread out) have options for kids to play club ball.

Carmichael to Sacramento is only 12 miles. I would wager a guess that there would be several club teams in the surrounding areas that would be easy for people to get to.

What sports have these rules for clubs?

If kids are serious about their sport, they don't just look in the immediate area for club teams. We have two good friends (and know of many more) whose children, 2 different sports, go where the good teams are. Both of their children are living in host homes in other states and doing online high school. This seems to be especially prevalent in hockey, or we we just know a lot of hockey parents. But we know of many other families whose children are living out of their house during a particular season of various sports. Luckily, the area has many nationally ranked club teams since it seems to be a magnet for athletes so kids come here. For instance, the local soccer club is run by a hall of famer. When we lived there, we had more world record holders of different sports as neighbors as we did anyone else. But other sports, they go out of state. It has been very interesting to see how this out of state network works since it seems local team parents open their homes to their out of state teammates. One friend of ours was hosting 3 team members until her athlete got better and moved out of state to a better team.

"Survey of coaches about offseason sports

How much have offseason club sports and training changed the high school sports scene? The Star Tribune asked metro-area coaches to describe how their sport has changed in the last 20 to 25 years with regard to the offseason. In survey responses from about 140 coaches, here’s what they said:

• Most varsity athletes in volleyball, soccer, basketball, hockey, softball and baseball spend as much time on their sport during the offseason as they do during the season.

• Volleyball and soccer lead the way when it comes to varsity athletes playing with offseason club or organized teams. But more than half of those who play hockey, softball and basketball also play for nonschool teams as well.

• Offseason training with specialists working on skill and strength development is most common in hockey, where about 60 percent of boys’ and girls’ players participate. In other team sports, many average about one in three athletes who train this way for part or most of the offseason.

• With no club teams to speak of in football, the high school experience appears least-affected by offseason team play. But nearly one in three players working out in some fashion to support their development for the high school varsity team."

I think Little League has the residency rule. I don't think it's wide spread though (other leagues than Little League).

The statement I quoted wasn't clear to me about what sports he was referring to.

Same here - technically, we have one 'non-travel' soccer club in our town, but the majority of bigger clubs draw from a much wider area. One of my younger son's teammates comes over an hour twice a week for practices.

Little League. American Legion too. Little league used to be by strict map borders, now they are by map border of school you attend. We have open enrollment here, and some parents choose to put their child in the school closest to their work, not their home. American Legion is by school you attend. Soccer was within borders, but none of their websites list borders. Cal Ripken appears to still be by specific borders. PONY appears to be by where you live. The USSSA team was by try out, and if selected your parents had to put $7,500 down to cover estimated travel and hotel expenses.

They have borders for players. Like I said, this coach said most of the clubs has folded.
