I am in the final throes of booking my Vegas holiday for 10 days! I am eyeing up the Stratosphere Hotel and have heard things good and bad. On the plus side, it's cheap, comfortable and has a nice food court. On the other hand, it's not AS nice as many of the hotels on the Strip and the service can be a bit rough.

Any advice?

It's kind of far north and actually in the City of Las Vegas proper. Kind of isolated from everything else, but there are plenty of transportation options.

If you can, I'd recommend checking out the downtown casinos. It's a different vibe there than the big ones on The Strip.

I agree. You're talking about 2 miles from the Bellagio/Casears main part of the Strip.

One of my sticking point is the $37.50 hotel tax, per night. Seems a little hefty to me.

It may not seem far out, but when you're there it seems like outer space. I'd stay on the strip. In my many trips, I always have. The only I regretted was on the strip, but at the start of it - Mandalay Bay, and it still felt far.

Be safe and have a lovely time!

Is that tax and/or resort fee? We just booked a different place and I think we paid almost $40 a night for resort fees alone, not counting taxes.

It’s very far off the main part of the strip. I personally wouldn’t recommend staying out that far. Unless of course you’re thinking of staying at Fremont street (those hotels are really Smokey smelling IMO)

I guess it depends on what you hope to do, and if you like to walk. Stay near where the things are you want to do.
I Chaperoned a High School Baseball team to a tournament and we stayed at Circus Circus which is near the north end of the strip. We were there 8 days and I walked the strip from Circus Circus to Mandalay Bay several times when I had a few free hours. Took me an hour each way. About 6 miles each way. So to me, the strip is an easy walk if you don't have mobility issues. But I am a walker, and a fast one at that. I walk 2 miles (to Target and back) on my 30 minute lunch break every day, which amazes some of my co-workers who are literally half my age.
I do recall the room taxes being pretty steep, especially since we got such a cheap rate at Circus Circus.

That sounds like the resort fee.

I saw this video a while ago. Five worst hotels on the Strip. I think in the comments the guy said he would rate the Stratosphere at #6.

Check out Desert Rose inn, just behind the Tropicana very nice and in walking distance to the other end of the strip , pool , Jacuzzi, full kitchen laundry. Still can catch the deuce bus and as far as I know there is no resort fees. Gym and very quiet. And near the airport as well. I love using the deuce bus all over.

Don’t. The Stratosphere is in a terrible location. Resonable walking distance to nowhere desirable.

Check out Harrah’s/Bally’s/Excalibur for budget hotels in much better locations.

I stayed there during my 21st birthday trip, roughly four centuries ago. Budget was about the only thing that mattered to me and it was $35 a night, so... The hotel was clean and comfortable and the service was friendly and adequate, though my standards were probably a bit lower back then. Unfortunately, any savings gained by the cheap accommodations were then spent on cab fare to get anywhere. I’d spring for one of the nicer hotels with a better location and stay closer to the action.

Much Better choices like above poster said try Harrahs, or Downtown(Fremont St)

What are you hoping to accomplish? I like the Vegas monorail and would check prices at SLS and Westgate which have direct monorail access right outside the hotels if you want to save money from being on the main strip.

Basically I just want a place to hunker down that's not going to kill my wallet, reasonable quality (not a killer), to see the shows in the evenings and perhaps a Pink Jeep Tour. Maybe - just maybe - splash out a few $$$ on the casino floor (should really try to avoid that though!)

Walking places isn't in my bucket list!

Walking anywhere from the Stratosphere isn’t really about distance it’s about getting to and from in one piece. It was a skeevy, dangerous part of town 30+ years ago. You couldn’t pay me to go down there.

Your wallet won’t be helped if someone decides to separate you from it. Seriously, there’s a reason it’s so cheap. For your own sake, take my word on this, it’s not worth the savings.
