:welcome:to the October 2022 exercise thread!

If you’re returning, we’re excited to have you back! If you’re new, welcome to the team! Here’s how it works:

Each person chooses a time goal and posts minutes towards that goal as they exercise. You can post daily or just catch up when you can. You decide what movement counts towards your goal - which can be a nice round total for the month, a specific number that means something to you, or a calculation based on a target number of minutes per day. Since October has 31 days, here are some common conversions:

15 minutes/day = 465
20 minutes/day = 620
30 minutes/day = 930
45 minutes/day = 1395
1 hour/day = 1860

In honor Hocus Pocus 2 dropping on Disney+ yesterday, we'll have some trivia from both the original and new movies (and maybe the book and/or merch.)

One of the special motivations of our Disney challenge is color changing! Page one will be updated with individual and team color changes as we make more and more progress.

10% - Billy Butcherson Blue
25% - Halloween Orange
50% - Sarah Sanderson Purple

75% - Binx Black (temporarily replacing our usual pink category)
90% - Mary Sanderson Red
100% - Winifred Sanderson Green

We’re officially starting this challenge October 1st, but if you don’t find the thread until later in the month, you’re still welcome to join!! There's no better time than the present to start toward your goals! Just post your goal and I’ll add you to the list. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions and to check out old threads to see what’s been going on.

25 minutes for me last night (25/600).

And our first bit of Hocus Pocus trivia:

🎃 (from IMDb) - The original 1993 film was actually released in July, not at Halloween. This was likely to take advantage of kids being off from school and to avoid competition with The Nightmare Before Christmas, Disney's other Halloween release that year. It grossed only $39,514,713 for that release, but became more and more popular over the years as it aired on television every Halloween season.

Good morning, all!

25 minutes for me yesterday, for 60/600 and Billy Bucherson Blue!

Doug Jones plays Billy in both the original and the sequel, and the moths that flew out of his mouth in Hocus Pocus were real, not CGI. :scared1:

Hocus Pocus was the first Disney movie to work with CGI, which was used to animate Binx’s mouth when he speaks. However, CGI was still a new tool at the time of its release. The same year, even Jurassic Park mixed CGI with practical effects, digitally animating just four minutes of dinosaurs and using animatronics for the rest. Computer animation just wasn’t advanced enough to handle many of the effects in Hocus Pocus. Gardner's team had to make real, physical effects work for the majority of the movie...While the moths Billy coughed up were real, there’s no need to worry about the dangers the insects faced while sitting in Doug Jones’s mouth. Precautions were taken to ensure that no moths were harmed in the making of Hocus Pocus, as an animal wrangler would carefully place the insects in the mouth rig with tweezers while a representative of the Humane Society supervised. (screenrant.com)

In a 2018 interview with Bloody Disgusting, makeup and special-effects designer Tony Gardner said that the actor wore a "mouth rig" a latex pocket attached to dentures that blocked off Jones' throat to make the moths come out "There was a small hole in the very back of the pocket so that Doug could cough some air through it ... An animal wrangler would place several moths in the pocket with tweezers, Then the stitches would be glued shut, and we'd run out of frame so that they could get to the shot as fast as possible," Gardner said. The team total stands at 730 minutes, or just over 12 hours. According to this calculator:

https://www.walkingenglishman.com/walktime.aspx

we could walk from Salem to Boston and back in that amount of time.
