Pittsburgh hotel suggestions and activity ideas

Yes i know that the phillies play in philly. My fault for wording that poorly. My intention is to send them to away phillies games in different cities each year.

Thanks so much for the suggestion. Im adding the wyndham to my list!

I can’t help you with your question. I think this is a good idea. Every other year or more often I would have it be a American League team. Because they only play the American League teams every 6 years away. Except for the Red Sox which is their rival home team they play every year at home and away. Also I would when you can have them go to two cities in one trip if the schedule works out that way. If theres a time when they play the Oakland and San Fran b2b good time to get two cities in. Dodgers and padres or angels. Washington and Baltimore etc. hope they enjoy let us know how it goes every year.

Thanks everyone! I’ve made lists of hotels and activities. You are all so helpful! I really appreciate it!

A walk along the strip on a Saturday morning is a must do. Heretic that I am, I thought Primanti Brothers was a meh. It was ok, but one and done for me. I can say I tried it at the original location.

Well I've lived in the area for over 30 years and have never been to a Primanti's because the sandwiches sound disgusting to me!

People have given you great activity ideas so I’ll address hotels! My husband and I visit Pittsburgh frequently, and I usually Priceline any hotel in the downtown or North Shore/stadium area that is at least 3.5-4.5 stars. I’ve gotten great deals, and the least desirable hotel I’ve gotten has been Sheraton Station Square...and really that’s only bc I couldn’t hop right on the light rail to the stadium. Any downtown/north shore hotel will be either within walking distance to PNC park or the free light rail. We frequent the casino most times we visit and have a beverage, so some nights we’ve left our car there and walked or ubered to the stadium or hotel. Most parking is much cheaper on the weekends in the downtown garages vs. through the week! My favorite hotels are the Residence Inn North Shore, Omni William Penn, and Kimpton Hotel Monaco.

We love visiting Pittsburgh! On our last visit, we stayed at the Embassy suites, which is very close to the stadium. They have valet parking or you can park at a lot around the corner for a very reasonable price. We were walking distance to market square. My son and I ate at the Primanti brothers there and he said it was way better than the franchised one he’s been to.

Other places we’ve enjoyed include:
Cathedral of learning at university of Pittsburgh
Andy Warhol Museum
Carnegie art museum
RandyLand
Bicycle Heaven (I recommend this to everyone!)

I don’t know how much time you have or what the interests are. My three kids are very different so we always mix it up.

We’ve been to the aviary, but we didn’t love that. There are also the inclines.
Bicycle Heaven is a must see for anyone that rides a bicycle. Here's just 1 room of many on 1 floor of many.

How come you didn't like National Aviary?

We love driving down from Buffalo to go to Pirates games. We always book very far in advance and stay at the Residence Inn North Shore or Springhill Suites North Shore. Both have parking (for a fee) and are directly across the street from the stadium. Also in close walking distance to the North Shore area where Rivers Casino is, Burgatory (awesome food!), Jerome Bettis Grille 36, and some others. The area right at the stadium has a few bars and restaurants too.

The hotels are a block from the subway, which we took to Station Square and Market Square. I agree that Station Square is nothing to write home about, but we like the outdoor patio at Bar Louie and enjoy Buca di Beppo because we don't have one at home. Monongahela Incline is right across the street which is a cool and inexpensive thing to do. The hotels offer shuttle service within a close radius, so we used that to go to the Strip district on a Saturday morning which was fun.

We took an Uber to Shadyside which I enjoyed for shopping, but there's some good bars and restaurants there too. Southside Works area is cool too, but would be Uber or driving distance.

I know Pittsburghers are very proud of it but, it's outdated, over priced for what it is, smells, awful over priced food. It's tacky. It's just not worth going to, I was just there. Just my opinion.

Church Brew Works is good. https://churchbrew.com/

Can confirm! This place was awesome, and the flights are huge!

This isn't exactly true. Each team plays a full AL division each season, and they play half of those games at home (two teams, and a split series) and two away (the other two teams, and the other half of the split series). They play each division every three years, but they always play their "rivalry" team (the Red Sox?!) every year. So there are plenty of AL options each year!

As for the original question, the views and experience of riding the Duquesne Incline is pretty awesome! We also enjoyed the Andy Warhol Museum. Primanti Bros. is delicious, there are other good restaurants in Market Square. We went to Primanti Bros. before a day game and it wasn't super crowded. And seeing games at PNC Park is fantastic, and will be a highlight of the trip!

Carnegie Museum on Pitt's campus. Great dinosaur collection and other interesting stuff. It was the museum filmed in Silence of the Lambs.

Before booking a hotel, make sure you are aware that a lot of hotels are valet park. I think the Wyndham charges $35 a night.

I'm a Pittsburgher too! I have been to Primanti's lots of times over the years and the sandwiches are as disgusting as they sound.

Back in the 70's the one in the Strip District used to offer a beef tongue version. Don't know if they still do. IMHO, not disgusting, just messy. :teeth:

Man, I thought the Primanti's sandwich was delicious! We got one turkey and one corned beef and split them and I thought it was perfect! Not TOO much meat, not TOO many fries, just tasty! I can't wait to get another one! I do suggest going to one outside of the ballpark too, though, since they only have limited options there at PNC.
