Anyone else considering skipping RotR until they work out the kinks and add FP? This process stresses me out.. My new husband is joining us at Disney for the first time so everything will be new for him and he doesn’t care about skipping it this time and my 7 year old doesn’t know what he’s missing. I think we’ll have a much more relaxing morning sauntering in after 9am for our 10am Oga’s Cantina ADR and skipping all the park opening insanity. I’ll keep watching this thread to see if process gets smoother before our April trip but at this point leaning towards skipping it which I never thought I’d say!

The middle ground to this is to take a shot at getting a BG but not letting what you get or don’t get dictate your whole day. As others have said, DHS is extremely crowded now immediately at park opening, so to do any of the major rides in the morning you need a FP or you’ll be facing a long line. With the opening of the Mickey RR ride and the new tiering you should be able to get 3 good morning FPs If you book them as soon as your window opens.

Whether or not to get up early enough to participate in the ROTR lottery is obviously a personal decision. But you can reduce the craziness and stress by getting 3 morning FPs, arriving at the park 30 minutes or less before official opening, and moving to a relatively quiet corner to try to get a BG. Instead of joining a horde going to one of the most popular attractions, you could make your first stop something like Star Tours or the Alien Saucers that doesn’t get a huge line right away.

If you get a low BG number and the ride is operating well, you might be able to fit ROTR around your other FPs and Oga’s reservation. If you don’t get a BG that fits your plans, just skip it. If you approach getting on ROTR as a possible bonus instead of something that is going to make or break your day, you might not feel too stressed about it. Just enjoy the spectacle and accept the results.

Heading over from Tampa now. This will be my 3rd attempt to ride. My first two times were when they opened the BGs with the gates so we were able to get super low boarding groups by showing up early. Super nervous about getting one today.
I’ll have 3 phones going - 2 iPhones and an android. Will report back.

Good luck! I have ridden twice -once with the original way of BG as soon as you get through tap and this new -“park opening” way. Almost the most stressful minute of my life as phone was not cooperating. So frustrating that entire day is based on on minute of the morning and if you manage to get a BG- what time of day it may end up being. I told my daughter that since we have ridden it a total of three times- we are done with it for a bit. That minutes is too stressful and the park is way too crowded at opening now.

I'm surprised by how much worse the a.m. scramble has gotten since I was there solo the week of January 19. That whole week was 7:00 a.m., and except for one morning when I goofed up on starting the app, I got low groups by following the steps outlined here. The app update seems to be the main culprit; hope that gets resolved soon.
Would you please point me to “the steps outlined here” that you feel helped you get in low groups in January? We will be there for late Spring Break, April Fools Day no less! So I have been following this thread for about the last 90 - 100 of the few hundred pages, and read the first page of FAQ posts. When they began talking about one hour return windows....

I have tested from home getting BGs right at open. Seems like it would work 80% of the time to get something if we were actually in the park and not at home eating breakfast! My son has done so too and we have seen the change to Backups happen by 7:01-7:02our time. We have also had the glitches with not all of our party showing up in our F&F list this week and the app stop working for long periods as well. We plan to have all four of us trying from my MDE based on what I have learned so far. Two iphone 6S, a 7 and my sons X will be working hard for us.

Just want to know where on the thread to find the steps outlined for success that you are referring to. Obviously there is still quite a bit of luck involved in what one gets when all are trying at once, but Im looking for clarification on the process to which you are referring. Thank you!

We were in the park at 7:30, got BG 44 right at 8:00. Called us at 2:10, got in line, ride went down until about 3:10, finally got on about 3:55. Ride stopped half way through (not sure since I don't know how much was left lol) and we were escorted out at 4:10. Got a FP to ride later but our day was full with FPs and reservations so we switched it to a ROTR FP for Sunday which was going to be our next day there anyway. At least now we can just walk on without getting up early for a BG. (Or can we try for another one?)
So our take on today was, we got up at 6:30 and got into the park at 7:30, waited half hour with nothing to do. Then lined up and did half a ride (taking up 2 more hours of our day) and what did we get? A fastpass. Used to be you just had to walk up to a machine, put in your ticket and get a fastpass instantly. Ahhh progress.
What we saw of the ride was pretty cool, but to line up 2 hours and just get a fastpass to come back and try again doesn't seem worth it. I wouldn't line up that long for a free dinner, lol
Feel like I'm ranting a little, sorry, long day.

Yes- you can try for another one- at least that is what we did when we were issued a recovery Fp on 1/17. W chose the following Sunday for our recovery FP. We ended up being at the park exactly through the taps at ironing and I gave it a shot and we had BG 133 (pretty sure I remember that number right)- and it was the las BG of the day- so it was our first ride of the day with the recovery FP (didn’t want to take a chance of it going down again like it did in 1/17- and then we left for Epcot. Went back to HS during our two hour window to ride our regular BG but had an hour wait in Que due to ride going down again during day and creating back-up.

Almost time! I'm here with some friends - we left St. Pete at 5am. Can't wait for the sun to get up above the trees - it's really chilly right now!

There's a CM near me giving wrong information to another group, telling them they can only have one person in the group claim a boarding group or else they will "negate" each other. So wrong! I'm biting my tongue to stop myself from shouting over at them to correct him. Ugh.

Can you mobile order the HS Starbucks once the BG mania is over or is it a giant line there only?

Sounds like you probably know the steps. After that it’s just a matter of luck if your plea to the Disney app and ROTR gods is answered quickly enough to get a low BG.

Practiced this morning for our trip next week. I was able to "join" like 4 times before it went to backup groups. I have an iPhone and was nervous about others' experiences but so far, so good. Also noticed that friends that are there got group 36 this morning.

Funny that we had two totally different experiences! My Join buttom never turned red. By the time it did, it was already to backup groups.

Mine wasn't red immediately, went to My Status and could join from there. After that it was red.

From my iPad on home wifi hit Find Out More right at 8 then MyStatus. Button was lit and hit Join. Took 5 seconds tops. Tried it four times before it went to backup group.

I find that from home the easiest way was to open the app 2-3 minutes before 8:00. Right at 8:00 hit find out more button. Usually, the join boarding group would be red already. Once it was not, I hit My status button and I could join this way. Never had issues where my family and friends are not showing (group of 7) but we have FP together, maybe it helps. I am on an old Iphone SE with the updated app. Will be there in three weeks and will have 5 phones (Iphone 5s an 7 on wifi - kids), Iphone SE and Iphone 8 on data and my brother has a pretty new Iphone. All connected to the same account. Good luck
