San Fran hotels on budget with car HELP?

Thank you very much, I'll check it out. And lol yep, not too bothered by those cons. One of my friends is a drag queen and another used to work in an 'adult' store so that doesn't bother me unless the area feels unsafe. And as long as they don't want me to smoke marijuana then they can do what they want :D Thank you for the suggestions.

Some might feel the area is unsafe. We do not. Of course, when we came home at night we would park in the garage and take the elevator up to our rooms so we didn't have any street interaction except for our short walks to A.Q. and Heaven's Dog for a nightcap or a late dinner. During the day, it is perfectly fine and safe and we spend much of our time on foot. Yelp might be the best place for reviews for these. They do lots of business with the Moscone Center so they're good enough for the convention crowd.

I drive through the area occasionally. It is interesting for the uninitiated. The odd thing is that there are luxury hotels right there on Market Street and just a couple of blocks away things start getting **ahem** colorful. There are quite a few gay bars in the area and precious little informing you of that until you set foot inside. In addition to that, there's the drug deals, prostitution, and just all out weird people and the homeless just hanging out in the middle of the night doing nothing.

And whatever you do, avoid Mid-Market late night. It just isn't worth it.

Here's an entertaining conversation about the neighborhood:

Well - I was starting to think a bit creatively, and there's an option that won't cost you more than what you're already paying for your rental car. This is the Crystal Springs Roadside Rest Area on I-280 (the Junipero Serra Freeway). It is legal to sleep there in your vehicle up to 8 hours for every 24 hour period. I haven't been to this one in years, but sometimes I arrive home tired and will take a nap at the Hunter Hill Rest Area on I-80 for a half hour or so.

We spent 2 nts last Sept at the Embassy Suites in South San Francisco. It's considered an "airport hotel" and has a free shuttle & free breakfast including omelet station, bacon, etc. (We had a very late arrival and just needed something close.) The downtown hotels were so expensive & if you wanted a car handy the parking downtown at those hotels was also big$$$, at least compared to what I'm used to parking in Philadelphia.

Anyway, the room was very spacious, the hotel was clean & we would stay there again. On Fridays & Saturdays it offers a shuttle to downtown Pier 39 IIRC approx. every 30-60 mins. We thought it was a bargain @ $173/night for the AAA parking package. We were staying Fri & Sat nights which is cheaper I believe.

Check out Columbus Motor Inn . . . Free parking, walk to waterfront, on a bus line and near cable car line.

Current reviews on Trip Advisor match our experience from a few years ago. We found it clean, quiet and a great value for the money.
