Today’s run was a little nerve wracking due to my own paranoia about others in the area. It was also ridiculously windy. I had to do this run on the track, and one side of the track felt like I was working just to not be pushed backwards. I'm looking forward to running in daylight again!

Today was supposed to be a practice nutrition strategy day, but after what happened last week I skipped the pre and post run meal.

It was cold and windy, so I admittedly skipped my post-run stretch because I just wanted to get in the car and go home. Not the greatest choice, but I often end up skipping the stretches on the 2 mile runs due to a lack of time, so I didn't feel that badly about it.

It was a rainy Christmas morning, so I started a little later in the morning. The rain started out very light, so I was hopeful that it would stay that way. My first 2 miles were pretty dry, but the rain got heavier and heavier in the last 4. Regardless, I was proud of myself for doing it!

5 min post run stretch outdoors

Today was the first semi-nice weather run I've had in awhile. It was windy at times, but it didn't impact me as badly today. The weather was a kind reminder that my Heat Acclimation Training begins this week!

Week 20 ✅

Monday, December 27, 2021
Not running related, but I decided to start a program on the Peloton app today to end the year. I stopped riding the bike as my training miles increased because I wanted to finish the plan effectively (without putting too much more on my legs), but my use of the app has been limited and I want to change that. I started a 4-week core strength program tonight, and wrote it out in my planner to ensure that I complete it in the new year.

5 min Core Strength class ✔

Today was my first day of heat acclimation training. I wore three shirts, but it ended up being colder than I anticipated. I was warm, but not as warm as I expected to be.

Today was my last M Tempo run. I didn't sleep well last night, and it was dreary and rainy all day, so I really wasn't looking forward to this one. With the weather and the need for heat acclimation, I ended up wearing a long sleeve shirt, my really warm UA jacket, a rain jacket, and a hat.

Today's run wasn't perfect. The warm weather brought a lot more people outdoors, so I had to change my route a couple times to try to keep my distance. My headphones died halfway through the run, despite having charged them (or so I thought) last night. However, none of that bothered me too much because I spent most of the time thinking about my accomplishments this year.

While 2021 was challenging, it was a year of growth for me. I'm so proud of how far I've come, and thankful for those that helped me along the way (both negatively and positively, because the negatives still contributed to my growth). I'm 5 training runs away from my first marathon. I can't believe I'm going to be a marathoner! :goodvibes As disappointed as I am that we're going into 2022 with continued covid challenges, I'm looking forward to celebrating this year's work at Marathon Weekend, and hoping to be able to do so as safely as possible!

2021 ✅

Happy New Year!
party:
Today was a rainy day, but it worked out because I wore my raincoat which was perfect for heat acclimation... What was really nice was that it basically went from rain to a very light drizzle within my first mile, and stayed that way for the rest of the hour. It started to rain again as I was doing my post-run stretch, which was fine with me!

My plan was to do the rest of these runs in my favorite spot, but I didn't get out of work early enough for this one. I ran this one at the local track again. Because it had been so long since I ran on the track, I felt it in my legs today as I started. It was really cold today, so I was thankful to only be running 3 miles!

What should've been the easiest run of the plan probably turned out to be the hardest. We got snow last night, which made conditions very difficult. Snow, slushy roads, and incredible winds made this one very uncomfortable (even dressed for heat acclimation). I actually wore a winter coat since it was only 1 mile, and I was still cold.

I skipped my walks because it was way too cold. I couldn't focus on pace because I was fighting against winds, so I just focused on a "feels right" mile.

2022 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend Recap
party:
Saturday, January 8, 2022
After finishing up packing last night, I woke up pretty early today for my flight for marathon weekend. As excited as I was, I was admittedly nervous about going with the recent rise in cases. I had already planned to be as overly cautious as possible, so I was resolved to go and readying myself to accept circumstances outside of my control. My flight down was uneventful. After arriving I made a quick walk-through of the airport Disney store to see if there was any chance any race items had been returned (no such luck), picked up the rental car, and headed straight to the expo.

I arrived a few minutes after opening and headed straight to the merchandise building. I was fully aware that items would be sold out. A fellow DISer offered to purchase some items for me on the first day of the expo, so I really just went to check out what was left and see if there was anything else worth purchasing. For reference, the only other race weekend I've attended is Princess and I've always arrived on day 1, so this was my first last day of expo shopping experience. I was shocked at how little race merchandise was left. Very little displays were up, with very limited amounts of items and sizes! I ended up picking up a general runDisney tank, and a men's cut Marathon finisher shirt (I wasn’t crazy about it but for some reason while standing there I decided I wanted a finisher shirt and the women’s that were left were way too small).

I stopped for a few photo ops before going to the next building for my bib. The line was so long! After picking up my bib I went over to the vendor building to get my shirt and take a (very) brief look around. It was uncomfortably crowded in there so I didn’t stay long. Before heading out I met up with the kindest DISer who purchased the items I was looking for. I was so blown away by her kindness (and that of everyone else from the marathon thread that offered! :disrocks:).

After the expo I went to Target to buy some water, and then headed over to BLT to wait for my room to be ready. By this time I started to get a little hungry, so I mobile ordered a kid's meal at the Contempo Cafe and ate it in the car while relaxing and waiting for my room to be ready. Once my room was ready I unpacked the car and headed straight to the room. I had planned to walk over to MK briefly, but I started to get tired and a little irritable, so I decided to stay in for the night. I unpacked my race gear and took a shower, and I started to feel myself crashing. This made me nervous because, of course, my first thought is am I coming down with something? I decided to take a nap and see if that helped. When I woke up I felt better right away, so it had to be the early wake up and the nervous energy!

I did a stretch from the Peloton core strength program I'm doing, and just tried to relax for the rest of the night. I slept off and on, each time checking the marathon thread, the time and my multiple alarms out of fear that I'd wake up too late to drive to the race! I did two separate sleep meditations to try to get back to sleep and get a decent sleep.

Sunday, January 9, 2022
I woke up sometime after 1:00 and started getting ready. I ate my breakfast and checked and double checked everything. I headed out the door at 2:30, walked out to the car, and realized I left my water bottle in the fridge. :sad2: Back to my room I went to get the water bottle, and then I was off to the race!

I was placed in s5 and I wasn’t really in a hurry to get to the corrals, but I wanted to get out early so road closures wouldn’t be an issue. The drive wasn’t bad at all. Once I got there I waited in the car a little to finish getting myself ready. I took the walk over to the stage area and decided to check out the merchandise tent. I was actually surprised by the variety of items they had, because I didn’t see any of those items at the expo the day before. I bought a passholder pin and eventually made my way over to the corrals.

It was nice that the corrals weren’t super congested like I've experienced in the past for Princess. I was able to sit a little distanced from others to stretch and get myself together. My mindset was in a bit of a weird place; I kind of had this "what am I doing here?!?" feeling. It helped that the race started a little early, and there weren’t mini waves to worry about, because once the corrals started being released there wasn’t any time for second guessing. One moment that made me tear up a little was when the race announcers discussed how so many people have gone through so much over the last 2 years, and how we have no idea what our fellow runners have overcome to get here. This whole race experience (from starting to train, to registering, to more training, to race day) was my way to find my way out of a lot of darkness. It was a simple and quick comment, but it rang so true and it felt so good to be acknowledged, even though they'll never know it. After that brief emotional moment my corral was released, and the race began!

My focus was to use this race as my victory lap after completing my training plan. I wanted to enjoy each moment, because you only get one first marathon! I stopped for whichever characters I liked, and tried to get a photo of each mile marker. The beginning of the course was incredibly crowded at times. There were pretty long stretches where you had to walk in the large crowds because the road was too narrow and it was too dark to chance moving into the grass. I missed mile marker 2 because it was too crowded to get over to the left side where it was.

Sometime after mile 4 I realized I never took a screenshot of the weather. In the end I guess it didn’t really matter because I didn't think to take one at the end anyway, but here it is:

Weather Conditions: Clear
Temp + Dew Point: 62 + 59 = 121
Feels Like: 62
Wind: E 4 mph
Humidity: 90%
UV Index: 0
Running Conditions Index: 9

Things to note:
- The hardest part of the run for me was trying not to get stuck in the pacer groups. I have absolutely nothing against the groups, but I use a run/walk method myself, so getting caught between those groups made it difficult for me to run with my own intervals/pace. The worst example of that was with the 6:30 pacer group near AK. The road was just too narrow for me to stay out of their way.

- I tried to keep my watches running, even through my photo stops and a bathroom stop. My apple watch kept auto pausing when I'd stop, but as soon as I noticed it I turned it back on. Almost every time I went to check the timing of my run/walk alerts on the Garmin I accidentally hit the lap button (thinking it was back) which messed with my splits. My mileage started out pretty close, but as the race went on my mileage showed a bigger and bigger difference.

- I did the entire race double masked. My original plan was to wear both in the corrals and then take one off for the race, but I ended up keeping both on. I had trained with one mask, so I knew it was possible. I took it easy and just enjoyed each moment!

- I broke the "nothing new on race day" rule by eating a banana :crazy2: and a Milky Way fun size bar :crazy2: at the food stops. I don’t like either (ESPECIALLY bananas) but I was hungry!

- ETA: I’m not sure if this is typical of the marathon, or because of the distance requirement, but every photo line I saw was MUCH shorter than they’ve been during Princess Weekend. There weren’t any characters that I felt I had to skip due to lines. I’ll be interested to see the comparison next month!

After the race I took my "I Did It" photos and headed back to the car. I showered and ate (too much) in my room, and then headed to MK for some medal photos. It was crowded and I didn't want to do too much, so I decided to try out the DVC Scenic Selfies game and then headed back to the room to relax until my flight.

The flight was delayed by a few hours, but I headed to the airport around the same time anyway just in case. Luckily I did because after returning the rental car I checked again and the flight was moved up an hour. TSA was incredibly light (I want to say the posted wait time was something like 3-7 minutes), so they didn't even have the precheck lines open (which was kind of annoying due to the added security procedures, but I had plenty of time so it was no big deal). Once we boarded the plane we were told there were a large number of empty seats, so it was nice to not be cramped with other strangers for my return flight/nap. I slept throughout the entire flight home (with my pro compression socks and crocs on). Getting up was a little bit of a challenge, but nothing major.

I got home late and went to bed, and felt good enough to go to work the next morning!

So what was my favorite moment from this weekend? Reaching the finish line and completing something I started so many months ago for ME and my mental and physical well-being. For the first time, I cried at the finish line! This race experience was my most memorable one yet!

I had such an incredible time at this marathon. I have to thank @DopeyBadger for taking the time to create my training plan, and for offering support and guidance through even the silliest of questions that I've come up with. I felt good immediately after crossing the starting line, and that was entirely thanks to the training plan experience that you provided me with. I felt completely prepared and never doubted my ability to finish once I got out there. Words cannot express my sincere gratitude! :thanks:

So what's next?
- Princess 5K, 10K and Half
- Springtime Surprise Challenge

I haven't done any running since returning. I've felt pretty good recovery wise. I felt the most sore on Sunday and Monday after sitting for extended periods of time. Every once in awhile I feel a slight pain in the back of my right knee, but nothing crazy or debilitating. @DopeyBadger I look forward to your thoughts on what you think I should do as I begin training for Princess and Springtime!

Thank you to everyone that has read this far and offered your encouragement and support. Each of you helped play a role in my accomplishment!

I'm a marathoner! :jumping1:

Congrats! It’s wild that your total mileage gave you almost a whole extra mile. Mine was over too when I raced and it was a little disheartening haha.

Congratulations marathoner! It's no small feat to complete the training. So glad you got to enjoy that victory lap!

Congratulations! You really nailed it just like you wanted to. I'm glad you had such a great experience!
Thank you!

Yes, the mileage thing was disheartening for me too, especially when I hit 26 and still had so much farther to go lol

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU DID IT!

I completely agree about the lines for characters on Sunday. They were soooo much shorter than I was anticipating. They were quite a bit shorter than they were on Saturday for the half too! Part of me wonders if because we were more toward the back if it was because people were worried about being swept if they stopped for pics, or if it was because there were so many no-shows in general. Either way, it was nice to have so many shot waits for pics.

Good points, I didn’t think about it that way! I thought since we couldn’t go right next to the characters it made the lines move faster, but those reasons also make sense. It was great to be able to stop for whichever photos I wanted!

Congratulations! Way to go! Great recap and a great race.

For the next two weeks (starting next week) only very very very easy running. Do about 50% of the volume you did at peak, and try to stay under 45 min for any single day. Princess is so soon you will not be close to peak fitness, but you should be in reasonable shape by SS.

Thank you! I couldn't have done it without your help!

Just to make sure I understood correctly, my peak week was:
639397

So starting this coming week, my goal is to run about 14 miles @ E/LR each week for 2 weeks (staying under 45 min a day).

Yes, but focus on the duration more than the mileage. So you want to do about 3:20 hrs of running this week. At 5 days per week, that would probably be something like 30+30+45+30+60.

Finally back with my post-marathon update! I scheduled these runs on my usual 5 days/week, trying to keep it very easy and 30-45 min each run.

5 min post-run stretch indoors

The rest of the week was a disappointment. This weekend called for bad weather, and I was scheduled to get my booster. Without a treadmill, my runs were basically cancelled. I decided to get some Peloton workouts in, and got back on the bike for the first time since I started increasing mileage for marathon training:

Friday, January 28, 2022 = 30 min strength class
Saturday, January 29, 2022 = 20 minute low impact cycling class
Sunday, January 30, 2022 = 30 minute cycling class, and shoveling. LOTS of shoveling.

I'm still not 100% yet, and getting back into cycling was tough, but I did another 30 min class today to keep moving. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about running this week because the track is COVERED with snow, I'm not sure what the local parks will be like, and the roads aren't safe in the best of times, but even more so now with the huge piles of snow everywhere. The local streets are very narrowly plowed. I know I've said this before, but I really need a treadmill... :sad2:

ETA: I just had a thought and I might try another local park tomorrow after work to see if they’ve at least cleared one of the parking lots. If I can make it there after work with enough time to run before they close it could work, and it probably won’t feel much different than running circles around the track…
