How in the heck do you shoot in raw or better yet, find the dang raw photos... is there a trick???

I am shooting in LARGE+RAW and I've yet to find the RAW format/photos... they are all JPG which BTW come out beautiful... but I'd love to know for the future how to find the RAW photos...

on my Rebel the RAW files only come when you are using the "creative" modes, the automatic modes come out as JPEGs no matter what

I've been using the manual settings as much as possible. (In my sig line they were all shot in manual settings, 3200 speed)

Are the RAW's in a seperate folder on the camera by chance? I have honestly not seen one RAW photo yet come off this camera.

In a manual setting go to your menu in the LCD viewer. At this time you can either choose RAW or RAW/JPEG among other options. When you open the pictures from your media card on the computer, only the JPEG will show up if you chose the RAW/JPEG option. You need to download software from your camara or a plug in to open the RAW pictures in your editing software.

I'm farily new to this, but that is how I understand it.

No wonder I've never found them! I just hook the camera up to the computer, go to MY COMPUTER and open the 20d folder and drag the folders over... I never loaded my software b/c I use Photoshop.

Rachel, I havent loaded my software either since I use a card reader and Elements. I just shot in RAW/JPEG for the first time last weekend. When they came up on my computer the JPEG thumbnails were fine but the RAW just showed up as an icon. I assume if I load the right software or plugin, when I retrieve the photos in Elements the RAW will show up at that time.

Edited to add...here is a plug in that some recommend. I have not downloaded it yet, but am considering it. Have to check to see if it's compatable with the 20D

Canon raw files have a .crw suffix to them. Try downloading the Microsoft Raw Image File Viewer, found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8E-B10D-4CE4-A141-5866FD4A3286&displaylang=en . This will allow you to open raw files within Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

If your are going to shoot RAW files then you are going to need software to convert them into image files. There are several options. You can use Digital Photo Professional (should have come with your camera), RawShooter (www.pixmantec.com ), Bibble (www.bibblelabs.com ), or Capture One (www.phaseone.com ).

They are each a little different. Some people like one over the other but they all produce excellent results. Each one has a trial version that you can try and Pixmantec even has a free version (with less features). Give them each a shot, see which one you like, and enjoy shooting RAW!

I was sure Photoshop dealt with RAW photos. I did go and download the upgrades. Of course it's a big program so it's a pain to open just to bring in photos.

If you just load the Canon File Viewer Utility software that came with your camera, and download your shots to that, you'll be fine. I only shoot RAW with my 10D and the File Viewer Utility allows me to view and correct the RAW files before I convert them to JPGs to be saved (I find the exposure compensation tool particularly helpful). I always keep discs of my RAW files, as a sort of negative. That way, I can create as many 1st generation JPGs from them as I wish, with as many different changes as I wish, and always have that original RAW file to go back to, if I want to start fresh. The File Viewer Utility is pretty simple to use - give it a try!

Oops! Sorry I left off Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. The newer versions all support RAW (beginning with Elements 3 and Photoshop 7). There are also other programs out there that do it too that aren't quite as popular for their conversion abilities. BreezeBrowser comes to mind but it just repackages the standard Canon SDK to allow RAW conversions.

But, I would really urge you to try one of the programs that I mentioned above (including Photoshop and Elements) to really see the potential of using RAW. The File Viewer Utility that comes from Canon isn't much more than the standard conversion software that takes place in your camera but with a little more control. By using one of these other conversion programs you'll see that you can really push the quality and exposure limits of your camera. Plus, I think they're more fun...
