TikTok is so stupid.

After having to close all of our school bathrooms (except for three - one female, one male, one gender neutral) after a storm of "TikTok Challenges" promoting vandalism and theft, I have very little respect for the platform.

Again, the lack of respect goes to teens who accept dares and challenges to vandalize or harm.

Social media isn’t going away. To me, it’s more important to teach teens to use it responsibly rather than try to ban it.

Good grief, student vandalism is a tale as old as time.

But isn’t this simplistic thinking? Why can’t we just teach teens about the responsibility of using drugs/alcohol/make business decisions/sign contracts and just let them do it? Why are we discounting the extreme addictiveness of social media, especially for young highly impressionable minds? Teens aren’t using social media to get recipe ideas or keep in touch with older relatives or get book recommendations. There’s a reason we don’t let kids vote and sign contracts and use alcohol. Or book hotel rooms or rent an automobile. Maybe there are also really valid reasons that social media should be banned for those under 18. Or for goodness sakes at least those under 16. I mean sure there will still be use by those age groups (just like under 18s drink alcohol) but at least it would curb it somewhat.

I think the disconnect here is that some people are talking about TikTok in general (which is used by tons of adults) and others are talking about it as if it's something specifically made for kids to do stupid/illegal things (and therefore should be banned/limited).

I absolutely think that parents can/should limit the amount of media their children consume. (None of mine even had a phone or tablet until they were in high school because we didn't think it was good for their mental health.) But, I think it's ridiculous to ban entire platforms/apps/etc that plenty of adults are using in a responsible way just because some kids have used the app in an inappropriate manner. To me, that's like saying that we should have banned landline phone technology back in the day because a few unsupervised kids were using them to prank or bully people.

Not sure why you quoted me and are suggesting that I’m handing over social media and encouraging screen addiction. I believe I said that, teens need to be taught to use it responsibly. Did you need me to specify age limits?

For the record, my youngest child became a teen in the MySpace age. We didn’t let her have one. We didn’t let her get FB until she was well into high school. She started using Snapchat as a senior. A senior who was months away from moving away for college. I’m uncomfortable with bans especially blanket bans. To me, managing screens, social media, etc… are parenting responsibilities and decisions. We supervised our DD’s screen use and access and tried to give access and teach boundaries gradually as she matured.

Funnily enough, her first post college job was as a Social Media specialist at a national shoe company. She still is in marketing which in her case involves quite a lot of social media management.
I'm old so I watch TikToks weeks later on instagram. :D
😂🤣 You and my DH. He’ll share a reel to our family chat and DD and I saw it a month ago on TikTok.

Totally true. We have an ongoing group chat with family and BIL refuses to use Tik Tok but whenever she shares a Reels, I laugh because we Tik Tokers already saw it, shared it and forgot about it weeks ago.

Not a fan of tik tok at all - stopped using social media many years ago. I'll look at it, but I don't use it personally or post things other than here.

That said - it sure is brilliant for marketing things.

The guy that was the chief marketing officer for crocs went to work for Stanley - the thermos company.

Stanley made great product, I still have a thermos that is at least 30 years old been through everything and still works great.

Through some brilliant marketing, and a bit of luck, I believe mostly on tik tok, they have made their 40oz tumbler a must have item. (as I am sure many of you have noticed).

There is nothing special about their tumbler. I have some cheap one from Amazon I have had for several years - yeah its great for Ice coffee and water - keeps it cold for hours. Each of my family members have one - we each only need one.

Yes someone posted a video of their car after a fire and there was still ice in the cup - that seems to be what started it off, just a bit of luck for Stanley. Stanley ran with it though. Gave her a free mug and a new car I guess - best money they ever spent on marketing I am sure.

Through brilliant use of social media they have made theirs a must have item. On Christmas day people posted videos of their kids opening them and getting excited for a tumbler as if it was the greatest thing in the world. Again, its just an adult sippy cup.

They followed that up with special limited edition ones only available at target in limited quantities. Its the same red tumbler but there us a small heart next to the logo. There is a pink starbucks one as well.

People are fighting for them and camping out over night for them - in the cold. Its a tumbler, just a tumbler.

There are people who have every color - like you have to catch them all.

They are selling on ebay for over $100. People are selling taking a selfie with one for $10.

So yeah you can say Tik Tok is stupid, but its working for businesses.

Makes me feel like we are almost not that far off from the screens in Fahrenheit 451.

Yea, I don't get the love for the tumbler. It has a straw, which means if it falls over, it will spill. What's more likely... having the tumbler in a fire and you can take a cold drink after it, or knocking it over/dropping it and the liquid inside spilling out?

Yeah - I have knocked mine over about 4 times in the 5 years I have had it, the straw gets caught on clothes when you walk by it sometimes - very annoying but it's pretty rare.

Mine is just a 30oz off brand one - it still sells for the same 14.99 it did in 2018 - I'm sure the 40z would get knocked over more due to the size.

The straw is another issue - you have to keep it clean and people don't.
Mine came with a stainless steel straw - did a dentist make that - seems like Ill chip a tooth.
Never used it and I keep mine clean by using disposable straws.

Oh and even better they sell all sort of accessories for it. Could you not just buy the knockoff and then put a Stanley case on it?

Anyway - i just find it all very amusing - and of course lots of "influencers" are now jumping on the bandwagon.
Two of the Disney ones that I find amusing have been talking about it and making fun of it, somewhat.
