Rumor: Will The TRON Roller Coaster Be Coming To Disneyland/Disney World
Posted on Thursday, April 6th, 2017 by Peter Sciretta

One of the signature rides at Shanghai Disneyland is the TRON Lightcycle Power Run rollercoaster. A new rumor suggests that budget and preliminary design teams for Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts have been sent out to Shanghai with the goal of bringing this attraction back to the states. Hit the jump to learn more about the TRON roller coaster Disneyland rumors.

Last month it was revealed that a Tron reboot was in development with Jered Leto circling the project. Some people are speculating that the development of that movie may have influenced the decision to bring the ride stateside, but Disney is usually very cautious about bringing rides to their parks based on films yet to be released, nevermind greenlit. Notoriously, Disney almost greenlit a ride based on Dick Tracy before this movie was released and sputtered at the box office.

I’ve actually been hearing the complete opposite: The Tron roller coaster at Shanghai Disneyland is insanely popular and that the ride’s popularity has resulted in Walt Disney Pictures exploring new films set in the Tron world.

And we know that Disney loves to clone their most popular attractions and bring them to their other parks around the world. Not only is it cheaper to repurpose a ride system but they already know they have a winner on their hands. Of course, I’ve felt much of the charm of visiting Disney parks around the world is to experience the unique rides and experiences that make them different. Disney seems to be more interested in having parks with their own identifiable attractions than Universal Studios, who appears to want to clone their entire experience park by park around the world.

So what do we know about this new rumor? And I should stress, this is just a RUMOR as of right now.

WDW News Today claims that Walt Disney World is “planning to build the attraction in Tomorrowland ahead of October 1st, 2021, the start of the 50th-anniversary celebration for the entire resort.” The plan is to put the coaster on the site of the Tomorrowland Speedway, but they note that the former Galaxy Palace Theater space (now cast member parking) is also a possibility. The rumors indicate that the Tron coaster would be replacing the former Innoventions building (now home to Star Wars Launch Bay) in Tomorrowland, although I feel like the newly revamped Autopia would

As for Disneyland, the rumors indicate that the Tron coaster would be replacing the former Innoventions building (now home to Star Wars Launch Bay) in Tomorrowland, although I feel like the newly revamped Autopia would need to be taken out to fit the massive space required for the Tron coaster. Others are claiming that the Tron roller coaster will be repurposed for the planned MARVEL-themed land at Disney California Adventure, but I’m not sure I buy that bit of speculation. Also, I’m not sure the Tron coaster could be re themed into a Marvel ride. Even if you turn the Tron light cycles into Captain America’s motorcycle, it would make very little sense.

It seems much more likely that the Marvel dark ride coaster that Walt Disney Imagineering has supposedly been working on would take up a place in the new Marvel world. Disneyland Resort also has to deal with noise ordinances as it’s surrounded by a populated neighborhood of Anaheim businesses and residential. This is why Disney California Adventure’s California Screamin was designed with special “scream” tubes were designed for ‘ to keep riders’ screams directed back into the park.

To me having two Indoor Coasters next to each other just seems dumb. From what has been said this is just an idea thats being floated around within Disney. There are supposed to be other plans more favorable.

I'd love it if they'd do it...and it would go to Epcot...but I agree I don't think it's the right theme for WDW.

Looks cool though...a rethemed version would be cool. Like I don't know...STAR WARS...please, dear sweet baby Jesus, stop building simulators...

Well on the bright side only one of the four attractions being built at DHS are simulators ;)

Which is exactly where it is in Shanghai. Tomorrowland and Future World are similar in concept though. So it could work in both.

Fair, and I know Future world needs some love, but I'd hate for WDW to think they are good at MK now that they have finished FL2 ... Tomorrowland also needs some love, and the speedway is just an eyesore. Reminds me of something from the 1970s/80s ... which is odd sitting right beside tomorrowland.

Dunno to me it would fit in tomorrowland ... or at least, in what tomorrowland SHOULD be.

There would have to be room...and magic kingdom is already overrrun. Any major development after the current projects that isn't in Epcot or AK would be stupid.

Think about it: which parks have the highest overhead and need to attract more volume to generate revenue?

Hint: I just told you.
