Two player help

So we just bought the basic starter system for ps3 and Mater. I think we chose poorly for our desires.

Could someone give a brief explanation of when you can't use two players at once? ie, during normal play mode and toybox are there times when it's single player? We have two kids who will want to play at the same time.

Also, do you have to have two characters from the 'world' for two people to play at once in the game play mode? Or can you use Sully and Mr Incredible in Pirates? Maybe this is a reason to get the villians pack as charcters are cheaper and you get a Monsters, Incredibles, and Pirates character for $10 each, basically a good bang for your buck...

We wanted the cars area which is why we got Mater but now I'm reading that we should have got the Lightning and Sally pack to actually get the cars world (It appears Mater himself doesn't unlock it)

When you play Co-Op in the "Playsets" (Pirates, Monsters, Incredibles, Ranger, Cars) you're limited to the characters that populate that universe.

For instance, when you play Monsters University, you can only play as Sulley, Mike, and Randy. When you play Pirates, you can only play as Jack, Barbossa, or Davy. And so on.

Only within the Toy Box can you play multiplayer with characters across different universes.

The purchase you're looking to make is either the "Sidekicks" or "Villains" figure 3-packs.

Purchasing either one will give you a second player from each of the starter kit playsets to enable co-op.

When you buy the Cars or Lone Ranger playsets, you automatically get two characters from that specific universe, so you're good to go from the start.

To access the Cars or Lone Ranger playsets you need the little token from each to put onto the base. (Similar to the token you received for the starter kit playsets.)
