Walt Disney was an American cartoonist, animator, innovator, icon, and the first to create what we now know of as the theme park. He dubbed Walt Disney World in Florida as the "Vacation Kingdom." So where did Walt Disney go when he needed to recharge? Palm Springs, California - specifically, Smoke Tree Ranch.
Walt Disney measures the spot for his vacation home at Smoke Tree Ranch
Founded in 1936, Smoke Tree Ranch sits in the Mojave Desert approximately 110 miles east of Los Angeles, CA, and still exists today as an all-inclusive resort retreat. Walt Disney built a home at the Ranch in 1948, and enjoyed long weekends and holidays while escaping the pressures of running his world famous entertainment company.

In 2004, Smoke Tree Ranch was named one of the "10 most exclusive hideaways" in the world by the Robb Report. Members of the public have a rare chance to visit this exclusive resort, but you have to be a member of Disney's Official Fan Club, D23. January 23-25, 2012, D23 members can attend the "Smoke Tree Ranch Roundup", and stay for 2 nights in one of the Smoke Tree Ranch cottages. In addition, the event includes access to all the ranch's recreation activities, presentations on Walt Disney's history at the ranch, a film presented by Becky Cline (Chief Archivist for the Walt Disney Archives), and special appearances by Disney celebrities and entertainers.
