We ate HOW much?? 10 days of total gluttony at WDW, with pics! UPDATE 9/2/12!

We are going to go to Cape May. Although after reading about Phillip's reaction I'm thinking that I might want to cancel. I just don't want to take a chance. Especially on vacation.

This is one of the reasons I love reading trip and dining reports. you find out a lot of helpful and good information!!

Yes, definitely a good idea to be cautious with Cape May. I mean, you could always attempt it, but if it were me I wouldn't risk it. You could always go to another restaurant in the Epcot resort area instead if you were looking for that exact location, or you could go to a different location. Plenty of great places to choose from, both in and out of the parks! :)

And here comes California Grill!

We had a 5:55pm ADR for California Grill. We arrived 15 minutes early, and I don’t know why, but I was not aware that you check in downstairs and they escort you up to Cali Grill. So we just took the elevator up to the 15th floor. When we got out, the hostess asked if we checked in downstairs, and I told her no, but she said it was no big deal and she could just check us in right there. She was very nice, and she brought us to the lounge area to wait for our table. We only waited maybe 5 minutes, while I was looking at the drink menu. I decided I had to get a glass of some kind of white wine from California of course! :thumbsup2

We sat down and our server Beckey greeted us. She asked if we knew what we wanted to drink yet but we were still looking. Eric wanted a beer so he looked at that list, while I was browsing the wine list. Ahh, too many choices! Beckey returned after a couple of minutes and Eric ordered his beer (a Belgian variety, can’t remember the name). I told her I wanted to try a white wine, and I normally love Riesling. She said the Riesling was a dry version, not a sweet one. So I took a chance and ordered Conundrum. She said she thought I would like that, it was not dry but not overly sweet, and a light crisp taste. That sounded great to me! She also pointed out the view of the castle, and the view of Epcot from the other side of the restaurant. She explained that we could come back later that night to watch Wishes from the observation deck, and all we would have to do is show our dining receipt. We didn’t end up doing that, but good to know for future reference, I thought to myself.

We had a table in the middle of the restaurant. When I first made the ADR I thought to myself that it would be cool to have a window table with a nice view of the castle, but I thought this was even better because if I turned one way, I could see the castle. If I turned the other way, I could see Epcot. The best of both worlds! The boys opted to sit where they could see the castle the whole time. Cali Grill also has an open kitchen, and this was our view of it:

Beckey soon returned with our drinks, some bread and butter with sea salt, and she had asked me if the boys could have some Goldfish crackers, so she brought them some of those. I was very happy with my wine choice. The Conundrum was just as Beckey had described, light and crisp and not too dry. An excellent choice! And Eric liked his beer so much that he ended up ordering a second one later in the meal! ::yes::

We were ready to order our dinner. Eric didn’t want to order an appetizer for himself because he wanted to be able to eat all his dinner. I felt I had to try an appetizer, but there were so many wonderful looking choices. I opted for the onion tart, which was outstanding! It was topped with tempura onion rings, and the tart itself was creamy and just full of flavor. I swear, I would walk back to WDW for one of those right now! :worship: I made Eric try some (oh yeah, I really had to twist his arm!), and he said it was excellent too. Here’s a pic:

The boys did not want the salad appetizer from the kids’ menu, so they just ordered entrees. Philip ordered the whole wheat pizza made with provolone cheese. I wasn’t sure if he would like provolone but he said the pizza was delicious and he ate it all up!

8cdbe502.jpg

Jonathan opted for macaroni and cheese. They brought him a very large bowl of it and he ate the whole thing, and he kept saying how much he loved it!

I had trouble choosing exactly which entrée to get. I came close to getting some sushi, but then I decided I wanted to eat a meat entrée. I ordered the pork tenderloin, a signature dish of theirs, which is served over goat cheese polenta and comes with mushrooms. The pork was wonderful, tender, and very flavorful. The mushrooms were excellent. While I liked the polenta, I thought it had too much salt in it. I think it would have been better without so much salt, but it was not bad. The combinations of flavors and textures was very good, just as it was with the onion tart. Here’s a pic of my entrée:

Eric ordered the veal t-bone. He loved this! He said it was very delicious and really tender.

We were so stuffed, definitely couldn’t even think about ordering dessert. We decided we would go to the Contempo Café and get some cupcakes to bring back to the villa. Sure, by then we will be ready for something sweet for sure! Eric got a strawberry lemonade cupcake and I got worms in dirt (chocolate cake, chocolate ganache, a couple of gummy worms sticking out of the top, and chocolate crumbs on top). Philip wanted to just share our desserts with us (we offered). Jonathan asked if we could get him a chocolate peanut butter cupcake, so we did. Here are pics of all 3:

The worms in dirt was amazing! It was very chocolatey and believe it or not, it was not too sweet! The cake was moist and fresh too. Eric and Philip enjoyed the strawberry lemonade cupcake (Eric ate most of it). And Philip had some of mine and really liked it.

Our meal at California Grill cost $155.84, including tax and tip, after the TiW discount. We saved $23 on food and $7.20 on drinks with the TiW card. This meal was worth every penny. However, Eric said it’s not a place he feels we must go back to on our next trip, like he felt about Yachtsman Steakhouse. I could go back next time, or try a different signature, like Flying Fish or Artist Point or Jiko. I’m up for anything! But it would be nice to go back to Cali Grill and just get appetizers and sushi. We saw some of the sushi there that other people around us were ordering and it looked amazing. HUGE portions too, definitely enough for me for a meal along with an appy!!

Unfortunately, when we got back to the villa and started eating our desserts, Jonathan didn’t want his cupcake (not like him at all). It turned out that he was sick and threw up 3 times. My poor baby. I posted the story on my TR for that day. I don’t think this was anything from Cali Grill though, I just think he was either sick with a virus or he had too much that day with the heat at MK and everything (even though he drank tons of water). He was fine the next day and none of us got sick, thank goodness! I stopped eating my dessert once he was sick, and I never finished it. Eric ended up finishing it a couple of days later and he liked it. The next day, he ate the cupcake Jonathan never ate and said it was delicious.

Next up: Chefs de France lunch and a little visitor. Stay tuned… :happytv:

The food at Cali Grill looks wonderfully yummy!

It looks like the mac an cheese has gotten better since the last time we were there. Chris, my DS, absolutely hated it. I tried it and it was pretty icky. LOL!

those cupcakes look absolutely yummy!! Especially the peanut butter chocolate one.

I'm sorry that Jonathon got sick. Poor little guy.

Looking forward to more!

I'm actually surprised you didn't get any type of fish here! The sushi is amazing and you should definitely come back for it next time. This is one meal i'm really looking forward to, I must say. I haven't had sushi in over 8 months and it's something i'm really craving and can't wait to start eating again. I'm so excited for Cali Grill!

Thanks for the suggestion on the wine. That's another thing i'm looking forward to having as well :thumbsup2

Such a great idea for the waitress to bring out goldfish crackers for the boys, while you guys have your 'grownup' bread. They think of everything!

Great reviews. A few places I need to try.

I totally agree about 'Ohanas.

Hey Bangzoom, sorry I have not been on your thread. Yesterday was Midori's first day back at school. I will catch up now.

The Plaza is one of our favorite rest. It's like sitting in a up scale soda shop and the view of the Castle. I love the Potato soup there with the bacon, cheese and green onion garnish. The Ruben Sandwich at Disney is awesome too. I remember the fireman. He is so kind to all of the children.

Cali Grill looks like a whole lot of fun. Onion Ring Tart and the Veal looks awesome. We have never dined there.

I'm looking forward to going back to Cali Grill. This time I think I'm gonna get a flatbread for an app and sushi for dinner. The banana napolean dessert was yummy too.

Now that you mention the "ickiness" (is that a word? :rotfl2:) of the mac and cheese at Cali Grill, I am wondering if it just disagreed with him. He was really sick, throwing up on the way home from FLorida too (one week after we ate at Cali Grill though) and we cut our drive home short by one day. I took him to the doctor and he said it had been a virus, and the night he threw up after Cali Grill, something he had eaten probably disagreed with him. Now I am wondering if it was that, because he was fine after he got rid of whatever it was, slept through the night, and was fine the following day. :confused3

I remember looking forward to wine and coffee when I was pregnant! Those were 2 things I wanted to have again so badly. In fact, when I gave birth to Jonathan, we were on "A Baby Story" on TLC, and I said that to Eric in the show while I was in labor (on an epidural of course)! :lmao:

We didn't know what to do at Cali Grill at first. We were considering sharing a couple of appetizers and an entree like we did at Yachtsman, or just doing flatbreads and appetizers and trying a sushi variety. But we thought to ourselves, we always eat sushi at home so let's go for something different. And Eric really wanted to try the veal t-bone. I had read about the pork tenderloin at Cali Grill, and had to try it! I also love polenta. So it fit my taste. And the onion tart looked too good to pass up, and tasted even better than it looked! :goodvibes

I was also impressed with the goldfish crackers for the boys. They were very happy too. Yes, they do think of everything. :thumbsup2

I am so impressed with the chef at The Plaza! And LOVE the mickey shaped grilled cheese!

Yes, Chef Ken was truly amazing. A wonderful person who definitely loves his job and does it extremely well. And Mickey-shaped food always tastes better! :rotfl2:

Thanks! Glad I am helping you choose some new restaurants. I think Ohana is totally overrated and overhyped. I really don't see the big deal, except the Lapu Lapu drink, and I can get that at Kona, which we absolutely love!

Hi there! I hope Midori has a great start to the school year! Here in NY, we teachers go back the day after Labor Day and the kids come back 2 days after us. But we end our school year at the very end of June, so it's all relative.

I will have to try the potato soup at Plaza. I think maybe we will go there for dinner next time and then stay for the nighttime parade, which the kids have not yet seen. Do they use the rye bread with seeds or without seeds for their reuben sandwiches? I don't like caraway seeds at all so I usually don't order a reuben just in case it has seeds.

Cali Grill was very nice. I recommend trying it at least once, for the experience and the food. But we still liked Yachtsman better...then again, we're steak people! :rotfl:

Can't wait to see what they do with CG during the re-furb
As long as they keep the sushi on the menu we want to visit again next year :goodvibes
Loving your reviews!

That's right, I forgot about the re-furb. I can't wait to read about it and see some pics after it's done. It will also be interesting to see if they make any major changes to the menu.

We have a reservation for Cali Grill in two weeks!! You've got me very excited to go there. I will also keep the Conundrum in mind because I like the same type of wine that you do.

By the way, I got my lactase drops in the mail and I've been going nuts. I think that I will need to buy another bottle before Disney! I tested it out on some frozen yogurt (yogurt was as bad for me as milk & ice cream). I ate a gigantic cup full at a build your own sundae place and I even had two different kinds of yogurt. I figured that if I really wanted to give these drops a fair test I had to really eat a lot of froyo, you know?;) I waited and waited for the symptoms to come and while I did have some, it was NOTHING compared to normal. So slight that I couldn't believe it. Soft cheeses like cottage cheese & ricotta are horrible for me too and it completely kept those symptoms at bay. I'm amazed - how did I not know about these? Thank you thank you thank you!:worship::worship:

Yummm!! Everything looks great so far!! I am not all that fond of Disney breakfast buffets in general. I never feel like eating all that much at breakfast so the price bothers me. Guess I'm just a cheapskate. lol.

Looking forward to more!! My grandsons still talk about the 'little visitor' at Chefs!!

Midori - is happy to be back in school. She loves her school, it's a Catholic School and she has been going there since Kinder and this year is 7th grade. WOW time has flown by. I will have to buy her a car in 3 1/2 years.

OH-MA-GA! Thank you for posting a pic of the Onion Tart. Looks delish!

Thank you thank you thank you!:worship::worship:

You are soooooo welcome!! How great did it feel to eat at that sundae place?! I found these drops because I googled lactaid pills and saw that they also made drops, but the drops were only available in Canada. I checked local pharmacies and a few health stores to see if they carried any brand of lactase drops, but none of them did...just the same pills under different brands. So I did a google search for lactase drops and this is what came up. The reviews were so good and I decided to buy a few bottles because we were about to go on a cruise and I wanted to enjoy everything. I tested them out with various things...ice cream, soft cheeses, etc. And I did fine with them! For your fro-yo, just use more of the drops if you know it will still give you symptoms with the smaller dose. My gastroenterologist told me that you cannot overdose on these and they are totally safe. Enjoy eating dairy at Disney and all the time!!! I order 6 bottles at a time and went through 1 and a half on the 16-day road trip, 10 days of which were at WDW.

I recommend the Conundrum...it is such a great wine, and it's from California! :goodvibes

Doesn't sound to me like you're a cheapskate, just sounds like breakfast buffets are not your thing. I can eat a lot in the morning, I just found Boma to be overpriced. Like I said, I justify the price of the character breakfasts because of the experience it gives us, especially the boys. For that, it makes it worth the cost for us. We saw Remy in 2010 also and the boys were hoping to see him again. I told him I wasn't sure if he would still be there (hey, you never know), to prevent any disappointment just in case. They were so excited when he came! But I will shut my mouth now until that review... :lmao:

OK, now I feel like I NEED to go right back to WDW and try a Reuben sandwich! Marble rye without seeds? Oh man... :lovestruc

It's great that Midori loves her school. That makes such a difference for students. If they are enjoying themselves, even if it's with an after school activity, they stay motivated and learn better. Is her school K-8, or does she stay through high school? The Catholic schools here are usually either K-8 or high school (9-12). And yes, time flies. My niece is going into middle school already and it feels like yesterday she was born!

OH-MA-GA! Thank you for posting a pic of the Onion Tart. Looks delish!

You're welcome! It was even more delicious than it looks in the pic. :lovestruc

Hi everyone! I haven't posted the Chefs de France review yet, because I have been very busy the last couple of days. Yesterday, I took a full day course to get my CPR/AED certification, and today I had all day doing First Aid certification, which continues tomorrow morning. I'm doing this because my assistant principal said it would be beneficial for me to do this since I am in charge of a show called "SING!" at my school. It's a NYC-area thing in high schools, where students get to write, produce, direct and perform their own musical. They also design and build their own sets and they design and make their own costumes. They really do everything, and I am their coordinator. Having CPR and First Aid certification is beneficial so that in case anyone gets hurt even when they audition, I can assist them in case of anything. Hopefully that will not happen, but in case it does I will be prepared. I am very tired from sitting and listening all day, and not getting lots of sleep (getting up earlier than normal for summer, and going to bed way too late watching TV), but I am learning a lot. In fact, I think every person who works with children of any age, and every parent should take these courses. In CPR/AED training, we learned how to do CPR on adults, children and infants. I told the instructor yesterday that I think it would be more helpful for people to go during pregnancy, than a Lamaze class! :lmao:

Anyway, sorry I haven't updated. I will update by the end of the weekend with at least one thing...so the next thing will be my review of Chefs. I also posted this on my trip report, so you will be reading doubles! ;)

OK, so I couldn't take TOO long without posting another review! :rotfl2:

Hello everyone! I’m here to review Les Chefs de France lunch! :cool1:

We had a 12pm ADR for lunch. We got there a little early, and we were told that they will seat us at 12 when our reservation time was. Actually, they could have been friendlier in my opinion…they were pretty abrupt about telling me this (not what I’m used to from CMs when approaching the podium at a WDW restaurant, including the time we went to Chefs de France 2 years ago). We sat on the benches outside and waited, along with a few other parties who had also arrived early. I didn’t realize that they don’t open until 12, but I thought
they could have said it nicer than they did.

Once it was noon, we were soon seated. We had a very nice server, who asked about Philip’s allergy, and went to get the chef for us. The chef came out, and he was also very nice, and attentive. He took Philip’s order, and he also took Jonathan’s order while he was there. Jonathan has gotten sick the night before, so I asked the chef if they could make the kids’ chicken fingers grilled but he said they didn’t have grilled chicken, just the breaded one and they also has roasted chicken on the bone. Jonathan doesn’t eat chicken on the bone, so I asked the chef if he could just bring Jonathan a dish of plain pasta, no sauce. He was very happy to do this for us, and we were only charged $2.95 for it (rang up on the receipt as a side dish of pasta). We fully expected to pay the kids’ meal price, and we thought it was nice that it worked out this way instead. Philip ordered the kids’ chicken fingers, but first he ordered the cheese puff pastry appetizer from the kids’ menu. OK, OK…this was really for Eric and I to share because we thought it looked sooooooo good! And oh, it was!

The waiter had also brought over a basket with a couple of baguettes in it. I love the bread at Chefs de France! It really does remind me of when I went to France with my sister when I was in college. They had the best bread that I have ever eaten in the real France, and Chefs de France comes pretty close! Very authentic. I was so into it, I forgot to take a pic though. Sorry guys!
Soon after our server cleared the dish from the cheese puff pastry, our entrees arrived. I had the Croque Monsieur, which is a French ham and cheese sandwich. The last time we had eaten here in 2010, I had the quiche which was out of this world. This time I wanted to try something different, and this did not disappoint! It was hot, fresh, ooey gooey cheesy goodness, with the slightly (yet not overpowering) smoky taste of ham, and delicious bread with cheese toasted on top of the top slice of bread too! It comes with a small salad on the side. LOVED this! :thumbsup2

1db0bea0.jpg

Eric was torn between the crepes (chicken and spinach with béchamel sauce) and the quiche lorraine. I told him how great the quiche was last time we were there when I had it, and he went with that. It also comes with a salad on the side. Eric really liked this and said it was delicious, but he said that he prefers my quiche lorraine. He still enjoyed this though. Here’s a pic:

Here are pics of the boys’ lunches…Philip’s chicken fingers with pasta and the sauce on the side (my kids eat pasta either plain or with garlic & olive oil, never with tomato sauce), and Jonathan’s plain pasta:

Both boys ate everything on their plates! :yay: Jonathan was feeling fine, which was also terrific!

During lunch, we got a visit from this little guy:

0b03123c.jpg

Philip and Jonathan remembered (before this trip) that last time we went to WDW in 2010, Remy came to our table during lunch. When I told them we were going to Chefs de France again, they asked if he would be there. So they wouldn’t be disappointed just in case we missed Remy, I told them that I didn’t know if he was still there, and even if he is I didn’t know if he would make it to our table for a visit. When he showed up, they were VERY happy! Once again, they still talk about Chefs de France at home.

We enjoyed our lunch at Chefs de France very much, as we did last time we were there. Our server was wonderful, very kind and attentive, very nice to the boys too. The chef was wonderful taking care of Philip’s allergy. And the food was amazing, just like last time. This is a place I still highly recommend to people. The atmosphere is also very relaxing…a nice break on a hot afternoon for sure!

This lunch cost us $51.33 including tax and gratuity, after the TiW discount. We saved $8.98 at this meal by using the TiW card. It was worth every penny, and definitely a restaurant I recommend to everyone! We will be returning again, without a doubt. :thumbsup2

Up next…picky New Yorkers dare to try Via Napoli. Did we like it? Were we disappointed? Did we fall in love with the restaurant? Stay tuned to find out! :happytv:

I'm looking forward to hearing about what you thought of Via Napoli. I'm too am from NY, and have been having a hard time deciding between Via and Chefs for an Epcot lunch.

I'm a picky New Yorker too! Well at least when it comes to pizza...and sauce....and bagels!

You were in Baby Story? How cool!
