Why did they reallocate weekends?

If I remember correctly, a very common point-stretching strategy folks on the DIS would discuss was to book the weekday nights on points, a weekend day on the Member cash discount, and link the reservations.

Or even book a cash resort - back then there were a lot fewer DVC resorts so people would "revisit" the Poly or one of their other favorite resorts on cash for the weekend. We did that twice.

We would sometimes stay offsite for the weekend - one year the weekend was Universal. At least once we flew in late and did a Saturday night airport hotel stay before moving to WDW - then spent Friday at the parks and flew Saturday morning with a Friday night airport hotel stay.

We pretty much always found it possible to do everything we want in the parks with half a day Sunday, all day Monday - Thursday and a half day Friday without having to pay for expensive Friday and Saturday night points.

When we first bought, we would even stay offsite on Friday or Saturday nights, or value hotels. I was very happy when they lowered weekend points.

And those who were around for the initial point shift made with the 2010 point chart may remember that it was either one the dumbest moves made by DVC or one designed to be intentionally super anti-member. I am talking about the BLT issue that was created, not the change as to any other resort that existed at the time.

DVC began selling points to existing members for BLT in Sep 2008 and to all others beginning in October 2008. At the time, the only point chart that existed for BLT was the 2009 point chart, and BLT was not scheduled to be opened until Fall 2009 -- it actually opened in August 2009

Many purchased BLT points between Sep 2008 and mid-January 2009 in reliance on the 2009 point chart. That included many who purchased enough points to mainly reserve rooms Sun through Thurs. At the time, they were still unable to even make reservations with the points they bought because that was not even allowed until after Jan 2009.

Then, in Dec 2008, DVD announced that the minimum add-on purchase by members for BLT would be changed from 25 points (like all the other resorts) to 100 points effective Jan 15, 2009. Many rushed to do add-ons relying on the 2009 charts before Jan 15. Then in the third week of Jan, just after Jan 15, DVCM issued the 2010 point charts that included the change to BLT raising the points needed for the weekdays (Sun to Thurs).

In essence, DVD initially sold points to all those who purchased from Sep 2008 to mid Jan 2009 using the 2009 BLT point chart that purchasers relied on, and then, before those BLT owners could even make reservations, DVCM raised the points needed for Sun to Thurs. Moreover, DVD just before that change, decided to take away from all those BLT purchasers their ability to purchase a mere 25 points as an add-on to correct the problem by raising the minimum add-on to 100 points.

Needless to say, there were many complaints made by BLT purchasers to the two changes. There were also lawsuits threatened, including because the DVC Membership Agreement that was part of the POS expressly provided that DVCM could make point changes up or down only if there is first evidence involving the resort showing fluctuations in use day demand during a given calendar year. In other words, it cannot create a new point chart increasing or decreasing points needed per night at a DVC resort absent actually having at least a year's worth of reservations at the particular resort on which to base the decision, and, obviously, no such evidence existed for BLT when the change was made.

There were apparently no actual lawsuits filed. Instead, in mid-Feb 2009, DVD reversed its 100 point add-on minimum, returning it to 25 for BLT, and deals were made with members who were pursuing the issue to be able to purchase even less than a 25 point add-on, apparently as low as even 10.

That’s a lot to swallow. I need to re-read that a couple of times.

Wow.

Actually, the current point charts are very similar to the original allocations when DVC first opened in 1991. Weekend points were high, and it was not uncommon for member to spend weekday nights, then transfer to a value resort for the weekend nights, and back to DVC for the following week. Even thoguh the minimum buy in at the time was 230 points, those weekend points took a big chunk. We added on 115 points and stopped moving.

Ah, I see. So it's news from thirteen years ago. From this thread, it sounded like a recent change. Thought I'd missed the release of the 2025 point chart or something, lol.
Oh my! I thought the same thing. I just came back after a two-week stay (GFV and OKW) and thought I missed a whole lot of threads LOL

I saw an 8 points BLT contract for sale once.

We purchased in 1993 and were told the points were higher on the weekend to discourage members who live within a reasonable driving distance to book weekends.

LOL, sounds like it didn’t work out the way they thought - everyone was discouraged from booking weekends!

DVC Members, maybe. :) But a lot of cash guests book weekends or long weekends. IMO, there was a lot more breakage back then, which does profit Disney. AFAIK, the 2.5% cap for breakage, has always been exceeded.

So weird because we booked 10 days in May. I noticed some resorts (studio rooms), have 4 point difference between weekdays and weekends and some only have 1 point difference. So strange how they come up with this. OKW was 10/14, AKL was 12/14, CC 15/16, poly 17/20

Its because of different typical booking patterns at the individual properties

And the need to keep the total number of points the same from chart to chart for a particular resort. Those points have to go somewhere.

I think the need to balance and the small number of value studios at AKV (compared to the much larger numbers of standard and savanna) is why the value studios ended up costing so few points. They couldn't charge more for them, because that would mean something else would have to be reduced by that amount and there were too many of those "other somethings" to make the total points balance.

Reallocating points to balance demand patterns can't be an easy job - especially because so many DIS DVC members watch the changes like hawks, and aren't afraid to challenge DVCMC when things don't seem right (according to the POS & MSPOS documents). Very glad we have those folks watching out for us!

True. Keep those eyes open to DVC and their ways of messing with point charts/totals.

We always do long weekends, even now that we're retired. However we avoid Epcot like the plague on Saturdays and even the Springs sometimes on Friday and Saturday. The flights are cheaper midweek and Saturday.

Right. No way I will do Epcot from Friday-Monday.
