We are booked for a January 2019 sailing on the wonder out of Puerto Rico. We have done 2 cruises out of PC, so this is new territory for us! Just looking for some recommendations on hotels to stay pre-cruise. And anything else anyone wants to add about these sailings.

We sailed out of San Juan several years ago. We decided to go down and spend several days before the cruise in Old San Juan. We fell in love the the area!!

If you are just flying down the day before the cruise (I would NOT fly down the day of the cruise - even with our all aboard time was around 9 or 10PM!!) Pick any old chain hotel - no big deal.

If you are going to spend a few days before or after the cruise, I would find someplace in Old San Juan. We stayed at the Sheraton (OSJ) on the waterfront. But lately (before Maria) it was not getting good reviews. We've stayed at Casablanca (yep, just like the movie), many people like El Covento - but usually its pretty expensive. Look up hotels online and read reviews and find someplace that meets your needs.

What we have done while in OSJ....
  • Visited both fortresses - El Moro and "Christobal"
  • Kayaked in the bio bay in Fajardo (wa cool)
  • Went to the rain forest (El Yunque) - surprisingly enough - it was very wet and rainy - Sept / Oct time frame (tropical storms and hurricanes out in the Atlantic)
  • Food walking tour of Old San Juan - was a GREAT way to get an overview of the area!!
  • Night tour of OSJ
  • "Architectural" of OSJ
  • Bacardi Rum factory tour
  • walk around a lot!
Have fun!

It was one of our favorite cruises. We went this year right after the hurricanes. Our first choice hotel was closed so we took what was open. Our first choice has now rebuilt, the Embassy Suites. The one near the airport. We ubered around and it was great.

We were there January 2018 and enjoyed the Marriott Resort Stellaris Casino. It is just off Old San Juan on nice beach, CVS nearby, nice restaurant. We liked the taxi driver from the airport and got his phone number to call whenever we wanted to go to Old San Juan or to port. Seemed like either was ~$15 per trip.

You don't mention a price range you're looking for, but I hear great things about the Ritz in San Juan. :cutie:

Just an FYI, the Ritz sustained a huge amount of damage with Maria and Irma. In February we stayed at the Marriott Isla Verde, which was just down the street. We tried to walk over to the Ritz for dinner but security stopped us when we got there and said it was closed. From their website it has looked open do I was kind of annoyed. Idk what state they’re in now but it might not be transparent from their website.

We like the Marriott a lot, though the next time we want to stay at the Condado Plaza Hilton

We stayed at the caribe Hilton. It was fine. We took rideshares into and from OSJ. Where they could drop off ad pickup changed each day; taxis pay a lot for their licenses and aren’t happy with the newbies, so it was a bit tense. We took taxis (on a zone system and you know what the cost will be before you get in) from the airport, to the port, and to the airport.

If I ever make it there again I’ll stay at Hotel El Convento.

We went in January 2018. We stayed at La Terraza de San Juan. I wanted to be in OSJ. We walked to the forts from our hotel. That was really all we had time for. We loved it and want to go back and spend some more time in Puerto Rico.

I've stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort and it was wonderful. Right on the beach and staff was great! However on my next trip to PR I want to stay at Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan. It's a beautiful hotel that I visited for drinks during my last visit. I would also suggest that you consider visiting the bioluminescence bay in PR. I did a kayaking tour which I scheduled myself since it was after my cruise and it was amazing. I believe that they are tours that offer motorized boats in case you don't want to kayak.

Thanks for that, DietCokeMommy! I actually even went to the Ritz Carlton San Juan's website and saw nothing to indicate what you have shared here. So thank you!! :thanks:

We did this cruise and then the repo to Port Canaveral in Apr./May 2017.
We flew out the day before the cruise, the day after our son's wedding. Thankfully they chose a Friday night wedding or we wouldn't have been able to cruise.
It was our 30th anniversary trip so we looked for a special hotel. We found The Olive Boutique, it was amazing a small boutique hotel with eclectic decor over looking a lagoon. The room was beautiful and the patio amazing with a lagoon view. It was as big as the room.

We loved San Juan and want to back and spend more time there.
The cruise was amazing, some of the most beautiful ocean water we have ever seen, the color of the water took your breath away.

Have fun.

Have you done other Disney cruises from PC and if so how do you think this cruise compared??

If it's the January 14th cruise, we are booked on this as well! First time for us out of PR as well. We're actually heading down 2 days early to do some visiting in San Juan so I love the suggestions above. I also looked at hotels for January and was quite surprised at the cost for 2 nights. With all the hidden resort fees and taxes it was almost an extra $1000 CDN for us :crazy2:! I'm guessing maybe because of the San Sebastian street festival that starts on January 17th? I'd rather spend that on excursions so we were able to find an Airbnb right on the beach instead that we have booked for now....although I will definitely be looking at some of the above suggestions as well.

I've looked at the bioluminescent bays as well and I heard that since the hurricane, there hasn't been much to see in terms of bioluminescent activity and that it was disappointing. I know my daughters would absolutely love this but I'm hesitant to book for this reason. I also read that you see more activity (or is at least easier to see) when there is a new moon and unfortunately when we're there, the moon will be about half. Has anyone gone recently and can comment on this?

Either way, walking around Old San Juan and the forts look amazing and my hubby and I are definitely interested in the Bacardi Rum factory (although I can't imagine my girls will be quite as excited as us about that tour. :P)

We are booked on the January 20th cruise. I agree, All the added pre and post travel costs can really add up! I’m loving all these recommendations as well. We were booked on the same one last year, but changed to PC after the hurricane happened. We definitely want to walk around OSJ and the forts as well.

Have you done other Disney cruises from PC and if so how do you think this cruise compared??
We had done 3 Disney cruises from PC prior to our Southern Caribbean cruise. It was actually my favorite cruise so far. It was definitely the most relaxing and I love the Wonder. There were also a lot less kids on the ship because of the location and time of year I'm sure. But, the kids that were on there were fabulous and my daughter made some really amazing friends. Our ports were Antigua, St. Lucia, Curacao, and Aruba. We really enjoyed all of them. It was nice leaving from San Juan because we got to see and experience something new. Also, whenever we sail out of PC, since we have to go through Orlando, we feel like we need to do WDW and/or Universal while we are there and that takes away a lot of the relaxation of the vacation. I would love to do another Southern Caribbean in January. Maybe 2020. We have too many trips booked for the next 9 months already to do it in 2019.

I will say the actual port in PC was better than San Juan. We had to wait in line outside for quite some time before entering the terminal, but it wasn't too terrible. It certainly wouldn't deter me from going on a cruise from there again.

We did the Southern itinerary last January on DCL. We stayed at the AC Hotel by Marriott San Juan Condado. Beautiful hotel with nice rooftop pool. We were only there one night. It is about two blocks from the beach (told by the Hotel, we did not get a chance to get to the beach).

We ate dinner at a small local place directly across the street. We walked about a block down to a small bodega type place that also sold wine. We picked up our wine there.

We took taxis from the airport to the hotel, from the hotel to the port and then from port back to the airport. Very easy. There were four of us (2 couples) and the taxis fit us and luggage easily.

I am excited to hear that! I agree on Orlando hard to travel all that way and not do a WDW day.... I am excited to see and try some new things. I think my kids are disappointed there is no Aquaduck and the great mouse detective ship game. So hoping they find some other things to love and they forget all about those!
