Would you miss Indy Speedway

My kids like it but I don't think it's worth the long lines, and it sure does take up a lot of space. Wouldn't it be cool if they took a small piece of the land and made a small 'Cars-The Movie' ride in Toon Town for the little ones, and used the rest of the land for a great E-ticket ride for Tommorwland?

Or how about something with maybe electric / concept type cars since it is in Tommorwland afterall?

I think I rode those things 2 or 3 times since 1988, and it was only because I had a small child they would not let on because of size. Won't miss the speedway at all, and I am one of those that hates to see old things go away. {Horizons, old GM ride for instance}

As long as they put something good in its place I wouldnt mind seeing it go.

I wouldn't miss it. It has to be one of the lamest rides of all times

It has nothing to do with Disney and was only ever there because at the time the park was built they needed rides, right? Otherwise why have it? At least give it a "Cars" theme to make it somewhat Disney related. I wouldn't mind seeing it go. Plus, it attracts love bugs, which a lot of guests can't stand (though I doubt those of us from Florida who are used to them care...)

This is a favorite of my kids, but I do think it is in great need of an update. My family has always agreed that the cars should look futuristic...Using the Cars movie would also be a great idea. Maybe more of a go-cart feel without those tracks, so you can pass other slow-moving cars...:)

I think they should update it with a Cars theme. Even though I haven't been on it much in the past few years, my kids love it.

It was one of my favorites until I got my Driver's License, then it lost its appeal. Remember, just because you (as an adult) don't care for it that doesn't mean kids wouldn't miss it.

Not everything in the parks has to be "Disney" as you say.

To me "Disney" is The Haunted Mansion, Pirates, Jungle Cruise, Space Mountain. The Polynesian, Advtureland, Main Street USA. None of those are Character driven.

"Disney" to me is about being transported to a different place and/or time. There used to be a nice balance of attractions, shows and rides that involved Disney Characters. Now it seems everything has to be tied to a movie, or television show or character. When did being Disney become about being character related?

I hope I never see a Geico caveman in the parks.

That said, I wouldn't mind seeing it go if they used the space for something interesting and innovative.

^^Agreed!

I don't understand when someone says "at least make it Disney related"

What does that even mean? If Walt created it (which he did for DL) then it's clearly Disney related...and moreso than Cars which was not designed by anyone in the Disney family :confused3

I agree.

The speedway either needs to be updated or replaced.
Maybe they could put in electric cars or trackless cars (controlled with underground sensors) or it could be replaced with a new "E" type of attraction.

My biggest fear is they will close down the speedway and put a meet and greet or another playground where the attraction is just like they did when 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was closed.

What a shame all that land (enough to hold an "E" type ride )is sitting behind
the Pooh playground.
The playground is cute and children like it but there is enough land for a playground and an "E" ticket ride!

C'mon WDW do not replace an "E" ticket ride with a playground.

Just my 2 cents

I agree with Mitros.
We've been on that ride only a couple of times, and that's when friends who we are with drag us on. Any trip on our own and we always skip that attraction. I wouldn't miss it at all.
Yet--I always see long lines. So SOMEBODY must enjoy it (like our friends!)

My DS has always loved it. They have updated the queue, the cars, etc. over the years, as the cars steer and run much smoother now. I guess the past 5 years, we must have ridden it over 30 times with lines ranging from out by the strollers to just about walk on. They could update it like DL's autotopia, but that would change the theming which I think is nice the way it is. Changing the gas power to electric would take away so much from the feel of a race track with the noise, etc. that I think it would a huge mistake, just like changing the steam locomotives to a diesel/electric like the one in AK. If they took it away, I think DS would be sad to see it go. The speedway is Disney. They just haven't made a movie out of it yet.

By not being "Disney" I don't mean that it has to have a movie attached to it. But the Speedway doesn't really have a story or any magic to it, it's just old gas powered cars stuck in lanes on a track. Fun for kids, but no Disney magic involved. At least the Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion, POTC, etc. all have some Disney magic about them, even if there was no movie to go with them, etc. I just don't see any magic in the Indy Speedway as it currently stands. That is why I think it is out of place.

You could put the Speedway in any park in the world and it would not stand out. There's nothing special about it. It has no "pop". If it were updated to a Cars theme at least it might have a small piece of Disney magic surrounding it, and it would still be fun for the kids - maybe more so.

While I agree with you that the Speedway does not have a lot of storyline to it, IMHO, it represents a very basic entertainment attraction that has a lot of history with origins of Autopia at DL. Look at other non-E ticket original attractions such as Mad Tea party and Dumbo, just to name a couple, that may relate to a movie but there wasn't much of "Disney Magic" otherwise. How much of theming and storyline can you give to Cindy's carousel? Walt still wanted a carousel. They aren't E-Ticket rides unlike the other signature rides you list.

1) Maybe it isn't the greatest ride ever devised.
2) But, for the little kids, IT IS a good ride.
3) WDW is for families.
4) IMHO, the more rides for little tykes, the better.

1) As a child its the one ride I remember as a 10 year old, and I loved it. And i probably can quess its the same for many many other preteens. As an adult (43) I still love it because i can ride it with my 9 year old boy.
