I could recreate the modem handshake with the best of them. I used AOLHELL for a long time to avoid the high AOL prices ;) I remember getting my first $100 plus AOL bill....:scared1::scared1:

i remember my dad wanting to kick my butt because i had to change the modem number to a long distance one and the phone bill was in the hundreds. i remember having to wait like 15 min for a reply on the prodigy bulletin boards and refreshing constantly. kids today don't know how hard it was to connect and old people can't figure out how to connect. sorry old people although if your old and posting here you've already figured out how to connect. WTG! :::high5:::

:scared1::scared1: I used compuserve for a short time. Man, I remember downloading pics and it would take 15-20 mins per low res image.

Kids nowadays have no idea that we once got interent through slow dial-up and had only "so many" minutes per month.

It is late here, and I have to wake up at 6:45 tomorrow :( Stupid School

LOL!! Wow you have brought back memories of paying for internet by minutes per month. I think every young kid at the time remember logging off and seeing you have spent 208 (or some other ungodly number) minutes online and being like "Oh man I am in trouble". Then you would convince yourself that somehow the bill wouldnt come or that they would make a mistake and the bill wouldn't be so high.

The old days may not be so far away, there's a serious push on by Comcast, Verizon, ATT etc to find ways to make more money off of their internet services. Metering use is one of their great ideas, google Net Neutraility for more info

Twenty years ago in library school, we were taught to preplan our Boolean search strategy before even turning on the computer.

A homeschool family I know has "unlimited" internet service. They use the internet for school work. They were told they are using "too much". Don't know who their provider is.

When I'm feeling nostalgic I set my ring tone to the modem sound. It usually lasts exactly one call.

Now you kids get off my lawn!

my dad still has dial-up at his office

:scared1: My folks still have dial-up but I haven't seen it in an office in years. Anytime I am at their house doing family IT work ;), it takes me back a few years when I hear the phone modem sing it's song when its trying to connect. :thumbsup2
