OT: Elf Capades 2009..... post your ideas/past elf pranks here! :o)

aww...I want little kids again just so I can do this!! At 16, 13 and almost 10 years old, my girls are too old to really get into this.

My son is 11 and I'm thinking about trying it this year. I hope he'll like it. I totally expect to get some eye rolls and "oh mom's" out of him, but secretly I think he'll love it.

I guess if it flops after about a week I'll save my effort and stop. My main problem is figuring out how to get the stuff done, he stays up as late as I do on the weekend. ;)

George, Donnie and Marta come back the day after Thanksgiving...the kids are already asking when will they get here!

Somebody please explain this, what is going on? Do you literally have an elf figure that you set up with these props or do you just leave the messes and they never see the actual elf? Is this just for fun? Where do I get an elf?

My DS is 11, but this sounds like great fun I've never heard of it before. Would he just be unamused and totally bored with it? I'd probably have to do some really gross/disguisting pranks to get a smile out of him. :rotfl:

We learned about the elf last year and gave it a shot. We did it for the two weeks before X-mas (this year Murry will be arriving earlier). DD11(12 is a few weeks after xmas) & DS4 (this year) loved it. DH & I enjoyed it too, DH is already asking when Murry is planning to arrive-he may be more excited then the kids.:lovestruc

I found the Elf on the Shelf set (an elf and a book) on sale at Carleton Cards before xmas last year. Our Elf arrived with a letter (I wrote-I also told them since Santa can't be everywhere all the time, special families get to have an elf visit them) from Santa (DD plays along) that said we needed to name our elf and read his book. At our house Murry's job during the day is to sit quietly and watch what happens. At night, after we've gone to bed Murry comes to life with a little X-mas magic and reports back to Santa how DD & DS are behaving. The next morning Murry hides in a new place with the mailbox (I had found a Crayola mailbox at Goodwill-just by sheer luck!) and has little token presents for DD & DS from Santa.

Some people have their elf/elves be tricky/naughty during the night. Personally I didn't want to deal with the mess, so Murry goes to the North Pole every night to report to Santa. When he comes back to our house he takes the mailbox, puts small gifts in, and hides somewhere waiting to be found.

For us, the kids get gifts from us and Santa at X-mas, so these are little gifts, last year I didn't spend more than a dollar/kid/day. Some days I didn't even spend $1 altogether. Some of the things Murry brought last year, Disney themed tops (toys), Disney yo-yos, puzzles (all from the Dollar Tree), snowglobes & candy (all $0.39 w/ Walgreen coupons), flashing cups (those were a splurge $2.50), cars for DS (that I had packed away from the after holiday sales the year before), socks, lip gloss, ($1 bins at Target). One night he did bring a game for the wii for family night (that was alittle more, but it was for everyone and I got a great deal on amazon). I'm sure you get the idea, I could go on and on.

Anyway this year we are a little better prepared. I've been specifically shopping all year for the elf. Got some great after holiday deals last year (Party City was a gold mine for me-all year!) and at the Target toy clearance over the summer.

Hope that explains it a bit and not confused you more.

We don't have an elf we have a snowbuddy (a snowman made out of an old tube sock). The kids in our school make them in Kindergargten at the beginning of December. Then one night at school they "come to life" and start doing things around the classroom. The biggest thing they did was built a snow house (decorated cardboard boxes) for the kids to play in. Well snowbuddy came home a few weeks before Christmas and we had him doing homework, reading books, having snacks. DS (9) is in 3rd grade this year and is looking forward to when snowbuddy comes back. Last year DH set up the video camera in night mode to capture snowbuddy doing stuff at night. We tied fishing line to him and made him "walk" across the room.

I love some of the ideas here and will have to use them for this year.

We used to have a myspace page for our Elf but I am thinking about switching it to a Facebook page...made by our "Elf"!! Anybody interested in doing the same and being "facebook friends" with our elf, Snowflake??:goodvibes

I'll have to remind our kiddos about our elf. We are in Disney Dec 2-9. Maybe I'll arrange for him to arrive when we get home. I need some new ideas for this year.

I was just thinking about this last night. I got the elves from Macy's that someone else mentioned. Their names are Mirrus and Razzler. We did this for a short time last year. I think my dd will enjoy it more this year. I need to start getting ideas...thanks for everyone posting. Love the elf pee and poop...that is a riot.

Well I have 4 kids ranging in age from 4-15 so our elf has gotten into some naughty trouble too. Went out with barbie and ended up in vegas- some photoshopped photos to prove his party night. :rotfl2:

Also left photos of him riding the dog one night.

Now what I did last year but need another idea I think - is he is in a location that he freezes in when someone wakes up- (so they find him all over) last year he stayed there all day until night time. This year I need to find a way that I can move him. (The kitchen mess he made making candy cane pancakes was hard to clean without moving him)

He was really fun last year I hope it's still fun this year. My then 11 year old was too "old" to believe but I caught her trying to figure one of them out and just couldn't and seeing that maybe look in her eyes was worth the whole thing!

Our Elf came to our home last year - her name is Peppermint Joy, or "PJ" for short.
She was SO much fun last year!! Now it's going to be tricky coming up with new ideas for this year.
So far I went to Target and bought in the dollar section a Gingerbread pop-up tent (it says it's for pets) that I thought she could sleep in one night. Target also had in the dollar section a Gingerbread hardcover kids book - so she'll leave that for the kids. You could also do a smores night with it.
Last year she played checkers using the Christmas peppermint patties as playing pieces.
She bought them the movie Elf and was caught on the couch with the remote and popcorn on the couch. Pj also left Christmas kisses in their bathroom sink and was lying in it as though she took a bath.
I found last year Elf cookies (single wrapped) at Walmart and I made it look like she cooked them and left a mess for the kids to clean up.
She used toothpicks one night as fishing poles(with marshmellows attached) and was fishing in some hot cocoa.
She took the van out for a run to Mcd's and left the car parked crooked. Left them each $5 GC's to there.
PJ also was found kneeling at our manger and left them a book about the nativity.
She left a trail one night of candy canes and left them a book about the legend of the candy cane.
Hmmm, what else did she do....she toilet papered their room and was found raveled up in the TP hanging from the celing fan.
She was out by the pool one night on a beach towel catching some moonrays.
She left them money with a note to give the money to the salvation army.
I found an "Elf in training" shirt at Old Navy last year and Pj left that for our youngest. We also found the Elf hats at Wal-mart and she left them one night.

I know they have Elf Kooky pens --need to find those for this year.
Now to come up with new ideas!!! Keep them coming=)

Walgreen's has some of the $0.39 candy coupons this week. You can get the coupons online to, just go to the Walgreen's site and look at the ad, click on the coupon. Anyway the coupons are on the Russell Stover candies and there is another one for Frosty Nerds.

Our Elf usually brings a few pieces of candy, so this works out perfect for us! Hope someone else finds this helpful.

I posted this in last years thread, but I will repeat it here--get a calendar for the month of December (print one out, if needed) and write down what your elf will be doing each night until Christmas. It makes it SO much easier to get things ready, etc., if you have the plans in front of you. I wrote mine in pencil so that I could switch if needed, but at least I knew what I was working with--and if I had any gaps! :thumbsup2

:goodvibes

That's a great idea!!! Makes it less crazy than having to figure something out last minute!!! LOL! :goodvibes

Well, I've filled out my calendar with lots of fun adventures for our elf. Today I found a kid sized snow shovel that she will bring whenever we have our first snow! No, I don't expect my DD to shovel the driveway, but I think she will have fun with it while I am shoveling the driveway! ;)

Other ideas I have:
get into DD's sticker box and be covered in stickers
play Dora Saves the Snow Princess on Wii (or our Winter Sports game)
string Fruit Loops and Apple Jacks for necklaces and tree decor
have a rousing game of Candyland with the reindeer
dress in a tutu and hide in DD's dance bag
build a snowman out of white playdough
decorate all plants in the house like a Christmas tree (tinsel, etc.)

I have more but a lot of it is based on stuff that I bought for this on clearance in January--reindeer socks, peppermint necklace, etc., and our elf exploring the 'new' things here since her last visit--DD got bunk beds, etc.

:santa:

Hear, Hear! You are NEVER too old for a little magic (and mischief!) :wizard: Think back at all the "dumb things" your parents did or made you do and how much you cherish those memories now. Eye rolling is a sign of affection in teens and tweens.... or so I tell myself daily. Besides memories like these will be much more amusing to discuss in therapy when they're 30!

My children are 9, 10, 11, & 12 and this is our first year doing the elf also. My SIL started doing it years ago but her elf is well behaved and it never appealed to me until I saw all the naughty antics others elves were up to around the disboards. Our elf will border on insane, I think.... my kids love crazy stuff. The silliness here is quite inspiring.

Decorating with tinsel inside of the fridge or shower
outlining the toilet in holiday lights
changing kids screensavers to a pic of them sleeping in an elf hat
Gift wrapping random items- spoons, frozen dinners, glass balls on the tree.
Pics of elf w/candycane ski's on.

Since your elves come to life only at night, do you move them during the daytime. For example, if the kids wake up to find the elf playing candyland on the table or floor, do you put it all away and move the elf to a spot for the day? And no playing with the elves, right, so how do you explain that? (I forget what I did last year)

In our case, we do move 'Missy'--we bought a 'sleigh' for her to sleep in last year and it stays in a designated spot so that she can 'rest' during the day. It is also where we leave her water and crackers at night. (And that way, I always know where to find her! :rotfl:) I can't stand to have the messes left around, so I pick them up right away once DD has found her. (Our mornings are hectic, so I don't usually let Missy make 'too' big of a mess!)

I also let DD play with her during the day with a few rules--she has to be careful and she has to be put away in her sleigh at night. DD thinks she will be lonely if she can't play and she just 'knows' that Missy can feel her love and hugs during the day as well. However, you know what parameters will/won't work for your family. :santa:

forgive me for not reading the whole thread... I have to pick up kids pretty soon.

What are your elves... are they like a beanie baby? do the kids actually see them or are they make believe and never seen? this is a fun idea but I am not sure how you are doing this. Also I am guessing your 8-9 year olds and above know this is just a fun Christmas game or not? My daughter (9) informed me last week she knows who Santa is, so I could not see her falling for this.
