Official DISNEY Cake Chatter Thread - Part II

This was probably asked already, but has anyone ever ended up with a terrible cake at Disney World, and from where? I know there is a few bakeries to choose from.

I've gotta get my DH to take a look at this thread for some ideas -- we're celebrating my big 4-0 at WDW in February and he said he'd like to order a cake (we are traveling w/ friends and family members so there will be a bunch of us there).

I was thinking of ordering one for my son's birthday and I wanted to make sure I order from the best place. I read somewhere that someone got a not so magical tasting cake somewhere on Disney property, I just can't for the life of me remember where.

Well, the cakes available inside the theme parks are pretty much supermarket grade, if that helps (whipped cream frosting, sprinkles, bad screen prints, etc.). The only way to get a fancy cake with fondant and more flavor choices is to order from a resort restaurant/Private Dining. Even then, only AKL, CR, GF, BC & YC, and BWI have bakeries that can handle these requests—although you can sometimes get BoardWalk Bakery or the CR to deliver a cake to another resort.

We will be celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary in a few months at Disney. Our first night there we are taking the kids to Hoop-Dee-Doo dinner show. I would love to order a cake. Does anyone know how this works? I saw the cake ordering number I need to call, but where does the cake come from for this location? I would love to get a Donald/Daisy topper, and I didn't see one of those on the picture list. I appreciate any info you have.:goodvibes

I ended up with an awful looking and awful tasting one from AKV/AKL -

I had been told that they would do three dimensional lions and it would be "Lion King" or "Animal Kingdom" themed. The icing and cake was pactically tasteless and even with four adults and three children available we threw half of the cake away.

Okay....so I just got off the phone with Pat from the GF to order a surprise bday cake for my mom while we are at the GF in July. I wanted a chocolate cake with custard and raspberries as the filling. She told me that she doesn't know if they will have raspberries for the cake....possibly only strawberries UGH! Mom doesn't like strawberries! Now what....do I just settle for a maybe on the filling for a $100 cake or do I change my plans. BTW....she told me that an 8" cake was $77.00 and it would be $35.00 for a chocolate pluto on top....does this sound right?? She also said that an 8" cake was perfect for 6 people....I actually wanted a 6" cake but she said it only feeds 4 - I just don't want lots of extra cake.....what do you think?? 6" or 8" cake

I'm telling ya, Pat is soooo flighty.:sad2: She's very nice but not very helpful. It's amazing that she claims they don't have raspberries yet every cinderella slipper dessert (from a GF restaurant) I've seen on this thread has raspberries on top of it! I wouldn't settle on a maybe for them, especially if you know your mom doesn't like strawberries. Is there another cake filling she'd enjoy? Also, if it's just the 2 of you, I'd go with a 6" too. I ordered an 8" cake for my DD and there were 7 of us and still it was way too much cake. It was covered in fondant with a Tinker bell chocolate statue, total cost $100. So I guess that's in the ballpark of what she quoted you then. I was thoroughly frustrated with the ordering experience because it seemed as if Pat was changing her mind and making stuff up as we talked! If I hadn't have been so annoyed, I'd have found it funny!

I second that — you do NOT need an 8" cake if you don't want leftovers. We had 6 people eating a 6-inch cake and still had half a cake left. (And I like my pieces BIG! :teeth: )

Donald & Daisy Duck-ITA with the others. Our 6" cake was way too much for the two of us, as we ate on it for over a week!
And as for the raspberries, just tell her you want the raspberries, not the strawberries, and keep it at that. :)

The extra for the chocolate Pluto sounds right though. ::yes::

I've learned from this thread that Persistance does pay off.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I will stick to the 6" and insist on the raspberries....I will let you know how it goes tomorrow :)

Little Lulu I cannot believe I didn't notice this earlier...the cake in your signature.....I printed out 8 different pictures of cakes to bring into work to get advice on the design of my mom's bday cake and yours was the #1 choice among everyone!! How is that for coincidence!

I have been looking at the beautiful cakes being made at WDW but I have a question. Is it just me or is there a LOT of frosting on those cakes? When there's a picture of the inside, it looks like the actual cake layers are very thin and the frosting is like an inch thick. I have recently begun making cakes and can't imagine using that much frosting! :confused3 So is it just me? Anyone feel like they got too much frosting?

If you're asking from a baker's standpoint, I don't think there's such a thing as too much frosting. I always ask Publix to double the filling, & sometimes the frosting depending on the cake. If you're making one for someone other than yourself, it would probably be safer to ask them how much frosting they want. I wouldn't be happy if I got a cake with a lot more cake than frosting. We like them about 1/2 & 1/2, but leaning toward more frosting than cake. Just a thought.

I called private dinning for BW and told me they could not color my little cake but could do the piping. I was told they are $25 at BW so still not so sure. I was then offered the podium cake of course no design and told me no decorations unless I get a 10 which I will not do. May just get a white chocolate figurine and strawberries.

EWWWW!
The green frosting on the side looks like diarrhea.:scared1: Sorry.:rolleyes1

OK ... Now I am totally confused??? We are dining at Chef Mickeys on DD's 9th birthday and I have been planning a custom cake for ages. I finally called today. I called the main cak hotline number and selected Option 7 for the Contemporay etc. I spoke to somebody in Private Dining and said I wanted a custom cake for my DD. I thought I would get to choose what I could have on top. I wanted Thumper and Miss Bunny. To start with she had never heard of those so I said they were from Bambi so she starts to look up Bambi (not what I wanted) and said I couldn't have that either so I had to think on the spot and went for Pluto. So now I have got a cake with a stick on transfer thing of Pluto - so not what I wanted!!! I wated something my DD would remember that was a bit different, not a cake that looks like I have collected it from the local supermarket??

What should I do now - am I expecting too much?? I have seen cakes on this thread that look like they are kind of unique???

I'd call back and ask for the Chocolate Pluto Topper. You can see it here http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=35722677&postcount=182

Lots of times you can have these painted as well, I've seen Mickey and Tinkerbell both hand painted and they are very pretty.

(You'll also see on that post that this Pluto came from the Contemporary, so they definitely had it at one time)

For some reason, they are not understanding that you don't want a standard cake with a screen print. Maybe if you mention "fondant" they will get what you're going for. Call back and tell them you want to speak directly with the pastry chef. They should give you his email and from there you can describe what you want.

I want to do something special for my DD's (21/2 & 9mon) and DH b-day. I was thinking about princess and pirates. We currently have ADR @1900 Park for a party of 10. I would love your advice and ideas.
