1957 vs. 2011

I think we're overthinking things nowadays.

Scenario 1:

Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.

1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.

2011 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers. Jack learns to follow the rules about not bringing guns to school.

Scenario 2:

Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.

1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies. Really? Everybody ended up friends in 1957?

2011 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it. Really? I have yet to hear about a SWAT team at our local high school.

Scenario 3:

Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.

1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again. Yes, because every screw up in 1957 got sent to the Principal's office once and was "fixed".

2011 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability. I don't think the vast majority of children with ADD are receiving SSI payments.

Scenario 4:

Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.

1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman. You'd think we'd have a lot more successful businessmen out there if this were the case. My guess is that Billy ended up being a thug at worst, or an average person at best.

2011 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist. No, you should read the threads on the Dis mor carefully. Lots of people on here hit their children and are not in jail. Personally, I don't hit my kids.

Scenario 5:

Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.

1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock. Mark then dies from lung cancer from taking up smoking when he was still in school. Principal is long since dead, as well, from the same cause.

2011 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons. Mark again learns to follow the rules, just like they did in 1957.

Scenario 6:

Pedro fails high school English.

1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.

2011 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English. Really? Where has English been banned from the core curriculum?

Scenario 7:

Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.

1957 - Ants die. Johnny loses a finger, possibly a hand. Maybe goes blind. Maybe blinds a friend. Needlessly puts his own life and those of his family and friends at risk.

2011 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again No, I don't think this happens. Can you cite a few examples? And since fireworks are illegal in my state, shouldn't his father hit him as punishment for breaking the laws? That would make him grow up to be a successful businessman, from what I hear....

Scenario 8:

Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.

1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing. Unfortunately the cut becomes infected and he's in significant pain. Eventually the leg is amputated.

2011 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy. Really? Really? Can you provide one example of where this happened? My daughter's kindergarten teacher hugs her all the time...

See, you cannot make up outcomes to purely theoretical situations and then blame the current generation for those outcomes, when the scenarios NEVER happened the way you are depicting them.

Yes, 1957 was filled with perfection and 2011 is falling apart...I'm guessing your parents in 1957 made a similar list about the problems of 1957 kids versus their own, perfect. 1928 generation. But somehow your generation managed to land on the moon, cure many diseases, and improve the world (while irreparably ruining the current generation, apparently). The current generation will cure cancer, Alzheimer's, fix the environment, and will also improve the world. Just as yours did...

I could go on, but my flight is boarding and I think my point is clear...

Let me guess, you'd sue Starbucks for not warning you the coffee you just bought was hot.

Do you mean hot or scalding, there is a difference. Read the McDonalds case it is not as clear cut as you may think.

I think you mean scalding. Scolding will just hurt your feelings.

Hmmmm, interesting look from the conservative POV. But it's just that...conservative.

First, I can't take credit for this post...just saw it and thought it was pretty apropros. Second, I wasn't born in the 50's, so for you to label me as such is presumptious at best and idiotic at worst. And my generation is NOW, so glad to hear the optimism in your voice about what we will do.

Your point is clear - you are a shortsighted, myopic person that can't stand to think that there are actually problems with all of the affirmative action committees, labels and protection for kids that need nothing more than a swift kick in the posterior, overprotective adults that freak out at the slightest inconvenience that their child has to suffer. Hope your 'princess' enjoys living in her bubble.

Seriously, there have been problems throughout the ages and no one time period is perfect. However, I think the point of this post is to show how ridiculous things are when taken to the extreme.

Take Tylenol for any headaches....Midol for any cramps.

PEOPLE!

Just consider the dead ants for more than a minute. Johnny obviously is a serial killer in the making.

Look buddy, quit trying to inject common sense here. Trouble maker. :snooty:

Read it. Person that got 'scalded' is an idiot for taking it to court. I work in law and can put up with MANY things. Being paid for being an idiot isn't one of them. People like this is the reason that you and I are paying out the butthole for insurance.

Trust me, suits like this are better off never seeing the light of day. Our court system should have shut it down...but then our court system is normally shortsighted too.

1957 - Mary, who has been married for almost a year, becomes pregnant. She doesn't tell anybody because she's afraid she'll lose her job. When she sees the blood on Johnny's knee, she feels ill and passes out. One of her coworkers spills the beans. Mary's male boss yells at her and calls her a ***** for letting young boys see her "in this condition" and fires her on the spot. Which is perfectly legal.

Actually, this happened to my mom in 1963, but I think you get the picture. You can view the past through rose-colored glasses if you want to, but it was FAR from perfect.

I was getting concerned that we almost made it one whole page on the DIS before someone over reacted to a light hearted thread. I'm glad to see that at least on the community board the sky is indeed still falling.

The hunting senario hits close to home.

When I was student teaching in 2002, there was a gifted little girl who was one of my students. When I say she was gifted, she was, she attended the gifted class once a week, did well on all of her assignments, etc, etc.

Well, the school I student taught at was in the country, and many kids went hunting with thier parents on the weekends.

Little girl comes to school on Monday morning and is hanging her jacket up, when she decides to check her pockets first before putting her jacket away. Inside her jacket, she finds a spent shotgun shell that she had picked up off the ground while out hunting with her father during the weekend. She IMMEDIATELY (thinking she is doing a good thing) comes and reports it to me and her classroom teacher (we were getting the bellringer activity ready). Well, all because of ZERO tolerance, the teacher reports it to the principal. Now, even the teacher has hunting experience, and knew the shell was spent/used and wouldn't go off, but HAD to report it. A while later, the principal comes down to the classroom and little girl is sent home for the day thanks to zero tolerance. Also, because of "the rules" she was suspended for three days for bringing the shotgun shell to school.

Poor dear was traumatized when she came back to school. She did not show the shell to any of her classmates, wasn't trying to show it off, she was hnaging up her jacket and decided to check her pockets before placing it on the hook in case any change fell out and foudn the shell. Seconds after realizing it was in her pocket, she tried to do the right thing and reported it to us, didn't stop to show anyone along the way.....

While the classroom teacher had to do her job because of "the rules" she still thought it was crazy for this A+, non-troublemaking student, to be suspended for three days. And yes, the girl's parents were up in arms about the whole incident that they took it to the school board.

We had a kid who was cutting brush on the family wood lot and had tools in the locked box in the back of the truck. Tons of witnesses that the only thing going on was that he threw his tools in the truck on Sunday, locked the box, and then forgot to empty it out when he went to school on Monday. Random search of cars (my daughter went to San Quentin High) turns up the machete and saws. Boy is suspended indefinitely pending psychiatric evaluation. District must pay for home tutoring to provide an appropriate education to the boy. Sixty days later all the psychiatric and police reports confirm that the boy just forgot to put his tools in the barn after doing chores.

And while this controversy was raging, pictures of the school yard with axes left in stumps were in the local paper. On a day when Hillary Clinton was making a campaign speech in the school auditorium.

Perhaps the person was an idiot, perhaps it should not have seen the light of day. Who decides? If it was without merit then it should be thrown out. If the judge finds Merit then it continues.

O' also thanks for the info. I didn't know I could pay my insurance bill out of my butthole, I usually write a check. I think the butthole would be less convenient but a whole lot cheaper.

Exactly. I know it is a Disney message board but why is Eeyore invited to every party?

Yes, we all know that there are no stupid judges out there...or any that are swayed by the promise of the spotlight on a high profile case.

And who the hell writes checks nowadays? What are you, like 80? ;)
