Alright yinz guyz....Here's a poll for you. I was reading an article on CNN that was talking about Braddock. It had a link to Islay's Chipped Chopped Ham BBQ.

My wife always makes it with Pickle Relish. I Like it without. What's your preference???

It's amazing how different two sides of a state can be.

I had to look up everything you just said on Wikipedia. :rotfl:

....as soon as I read the word "Yinz", I just KNEW you were from the Pittsburgh area!:rotfl2:

I had to read this as soon as I saw "Yinz". I'm about 30 minutes north of the city so I'm exposed to Pittsburghese quite a bit.

I'm pretty sure the words your speaking are English, but I have no idea what you're saying.

And it makes no sense that I have no idea what Braddock is but now I want to try it, pickles and ham sound great!

Chipped, chopped ham:confused3? Why not just puree it:rotfl:?

I thought this at first, too, but "Chopped ham" is a type of processed meat taken from various bits of ham and made into a load, ala SPAM.

Then it's chipped.

At least that's what Wikipedia says.

That may be wikipedia's definition, but it's not Pittsburgh's! It's just ham from the deli that's been thinly sliced and then chopped/chipped up. Unless I'm not understanding right after 28 years of living here! Oh no! What if I've been living like a faker all these years?!?! Eek!

Yep! You're a faker! :rotfl2:

Funny reading all the responses. We do have a truly unique dialect here in the Pittsburgh area. While I am not native to Pittsburgh (and the closest I ever come to saying "Yinz" is my neighbor from Germany who's name is Jens), I do find certain bits creep into my speech. It's especially telling when I speak with someone who is a true "yinzer", but I have been known to use the following:

N'at - "and that"
Dahn - "down"
Dahntahn - "downtown"
Raht - "route"

Anywho...getting back on topic. Glad to see most of the votes are AGAINST the pickles. I don't like it, but my wife grew up here and that's how she's always had it.

Pittsburgh girl here- born and raised. Love me some Isaly's! If you get true Isaly's then it really is a "ham loaf" that is thinly sliced and chopped. It's not a true sandwich without their BBQ sauce either. No pickles or relish on mine!

I live in Hershey now and still eat my ham this way, however, not a single deli around here knows how to chop it, so I have to do that at home. Every visit I make out west I pick up a huge bottle of sauce.

And honestly, I know people love the Pittsburghese', but I know very few people that actually say n'at or dahntahn- even from my family that has lived here for over 100 years.

Ah ha, I see! Thanks for clarifying! I just buy whatever ham is on sale (sometimes it's Isaly's sometimes not) and add the sauce. I guess I'm authentic 50% of the time and a faker the other 50% lol. But not matter what, no pickles. I like them on burgers and hot dogs but not on my chipped chopped ham sammich. :)

EWWWW!!!

That's not even close to what it is.

I love chipped ham but its just an imitation of what used to be from the years when there were actually real live stores.

I loved Isalys chocolate chip ice cream. It had jimmies in it, not chocolate chunks.

Growing up my mom ALWAYS made ham BBQ's with the pickle relish. I make it without because the kids and DH do not like pickle relish.

Erie native here, so I've had Isaly's as a child, but I was never a fan, pickles or otherwise. :duck:
