women in your 30s or older - clothing question

I'm 39 but am only 4'11" tall and 105 lbs, many people who just meet me(sans kids) think I am in college...my 11 y.o. dd is the same height and weight as me (dh is 6'2").
When dh folds the laundry he often gives her my clothes and me her clothes ...that being said I do not shop there specifically to buy things for myself, but if there's something really cute on sale for really cheap i would snag it for myself ;)

There is nothing inappropriate about that top for a 13 year old. The sleeves come down to the elbows and everything up top is more than adequately covered.

Until a boy (or a girl) decides it would be funny to pull the string in the back and her entire chest is exposed, which isn't a risk I would take with my child.

They are not sized as juniors.

Not everything in the junior's department is sized specifically as "junior's". That doesn't change the fact that one is shopping in the "junior's department". Size on the label really doesn't matter anyway. It's all about proper fit. I wear a 5/6 in jeans at Aero, but my Gap pants are size 2, sometimes a 4. Brands, size, location in the store...none of that matters as long as you wear something that fits you properly, and you look appropriate for the setting you are in.

I'm 42. I don't shop at any of those stores, but not because "they're for teens/young adults." I'm 5'1" and wear a size 2 or 4 depending on the brand. I also have a very slight build and a narrow frame so Misses clothing and "regular people" clothing rarely fits me. And juniors? Well I can usually find the odd sweater or top that fits, but the pants are always miles too long.

I need petite sizes (they're shorter pants and narrower tops.) Problem is, designers seem to equate "petite" with "granny." The petite clothing in a lot of stores look like things that my 88 year old grandmother wears. So, when I find a pair of jeans, or shorts, or a shirt that fit and looks good on me, I buy it. I don't care what store it's from.

This is a weird thread :-/

I'm not in my 30's quite yet, but AE jeans are my god send. I don't anticipate that changing anytime in the future. I don't think jeans can have much of a kid vibe unless their covered in rhinestones or glitter.

I've got some AE tops but nothing more than a standard T shirt or hoodie. Most of my tops are from VS pink and old navy. My go to outfit is jeans and a T or a hoodie so these types of places match my style.

I don't think I look like a teenager in this stuff at all. Getting older doesn't mean it's time for moo moos.

When my daughter was your height, she could sometimes get away with "grown up" capris as pants :)

It's funny, because in the kids sizes everything was WAY too short on her while 0 or 1/2 were all way too long.

aarcher Uh oh! You're approaching the mom jean era. Time to dress like this:

At stores like tjs and Marshall those brands are in the misses section.
The reason you likely have such a size difference is because Aero would be cut for juniors sizing. Anything with an odd number (except pants that are sized starting in the 20s..24, 25, 26 like Lucky) is cut to fit young ladies/teens.

I've actually gotten regular length capri jeans as well-fitting (for me) jeans before.

Please no. Not the "mom" look. Never. Ever. Seems I'm built like you as well and my vow is to NEVER wear sweatshirts with turtlecks and "mom" pants.

I'm 29. I've never shopped at Aeropostale or Ambercrombie--those stores never appealed to me.

I used to shop at A&E when I was 22-24...mostly for the jeans and hooded sweatshirts.

I would never think to go back into that store now as a 29 year old--I associate it with teens and college age people. I don't doubt that some of their clothes would look just fine on older people, but I personally wouldn't choose to shop there.

Moms who try to look like their teen daughters is definitely not a look I will ever be going for. Not saying that just buying A&E jeans puts a 40 year old in that category.

I am 37 and get most of my clothes at Aeropostale/American Eagle/Hollister. I am 5'2 and weigh about 95 lbs. The jeans from Aero/AE actually fit me.

I'm with you on the AE jeans. They are the perfect fit for my shape and I'm 47. No mom jeans or moo moos for me.

I know why the sizes are different, but that doesn't matter. I buy what fits my body., and what looks good on it-no matter which department it is in. I have the body of a young lady/teen. Thank God I had kids that each left me with 10 extra pounds, or I would be even more difficult to fit. When I got pregnant with DD, I was 25 and 99 pounds, and that was all genetics, not diet/exercise. Some people are just built that way. I am one of them.

Nope, don't shop in any of those stores. I can see wearing jeans or basic tops from them but really I have my own brands that I like and wear.

I am 44 and I have a curvy body so Juniors don't fit. And I agree with Eliza that I don't like looking like everyone else.

Most junior clothing seems to be of lower quality. It's fashion focused and not made very well. I don't even shop at those stores for my daughter.

I love to shop at boutiques and outlets since I love designer clothing and can get great deals. I also shop at TJ Maxx, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Lord and Taylor and I bargain hunt.

Old Navy jeans are the worst. The waist is weird and I need short sized and they seem to think that if you're short then you must have thick legs...

I learned my lesson with Old Navy jeans. They fit great in the store or straight from the dryer, but they stretch out within 20 minutes of putting them on. I didn't realize how bad it was until I caught myself in a full length at work and saw the jeans all floppy around the backside

My mom was that way too! So was/is my aunt (her sister) and my grandmother (her mom).

Too bad she didn't those genetics on to me LMAO. I got the genes from the other side of the family and have hips and a chest. Finding tops, coats, and blazers are so difficult because I have a tiny waist but a larger chest. So I have to buy to the larger part, which means the rest of the top is baggy.
