Last Trip? It was until we met Food & Wine -- Recap 2/12

The day had finally come...we were headed to our first of two happy places for 16 days. A lot of people back home thought we should cancel our trip after Mark lost his job mid-June...they thought we were crazy going away for 16 days with only one income coming in. However, first and foremost, Mark needed this get away. It is very hard, even though he sensed it was coming, to lose your job that you had been at for 29 years. Secondly, the trip was already paid for -- both resorts at Disney, airlines, car rental (the condo on Marco is free). The only cost to us would be meals and souvenirs. I had $400 in gift cards and almost $200 on my Disney Rewards card so that was a nice chunk. Plus, with Mark losing his job, he picked up a LOT of extra baseball games (he umps in the spring/summer) which brought in a nice bit of change for our trip. So we were set.

So finally it is Friday morning, September 19, and it is time! I was up first, as usual. I showered, packed the rest of my toiletries and then got Mark up to do the same. Normally, Andy (our oldest son), would drive us to the airport, but he was going to Dubuque this day to participate in a golf outing with his brother at the college that Markie coaches at. So we had a limo picking us up at 8:30 to drive us to O'Hare Airport for our 10:40 a.m. flight.

Us anxiously awaiting the arrival of our limo:

The limo arrived at 8:25 and we were on our way. I had checked us online the day before for our flight. Mark was angry because I again got Precheck and was going to be able to go through a separate line and not have to take my laptop out of my bag, take off my shoes, etc. :rotfl2::rotfl2:

We arrived at the airport by 9:15 and checked our luggage.

Getting a little excited to get this show on the road:

We entered the airport and were through security in no time at all.

We stopped for some breakfast...me at Starbucks (yes, Andy, Starbucks...but trust me, later in the trip there are not nearly enough stops at Starbucks)

And for some reason I did not get a picture of Mark's Dunkin' Donuts coffee or his bagel. Failure number one on food pics.

Soon we were at our gate waiting to board. And then our plane arrived:

And then we were boarding and I had a very, very happy hubby.

Well, we were both actually very happy

We took off about 15 minutes late due to the late arriving passengers. Seriously people...get your act in gear.

I snoozed on the plane for a good hour (I was still recovering from bronchitis that I had come home with from Vegas early in August and the coughing was still keeping me up a bit at night).

Before I knew it, we were landing and we were on the fake monorail

Our luggage came pretty quickly and we were off to pick up our rental car. We used one of the kiosks and were done in five minutes. We picked a Chevy Impala for this trip.

And then it was time to hit the road and get to Happy Place #1.

Before long, we were seeing this

However, our first stop would NOT be our resort. As explained in my PTR, Disney had extended our Annual Passes by a month (they had actually expired four days before we got there) due to a letter I had sent complaining about a few things on our previous trip. I guess after 25+ visits, they want to keep you happy and do what they can to make things better.

Therefore, our first stop was Downtown Disney to get our AP's extended for the one month period.

Construction on the new parking garage

Waiting our turn to be called up at Guest Relations

That taken care of, we popped into the World of Disney store and looked around a bit

We grabbed a Starbucks and departed Downtown Disney

And it was on the way to our first resort of this stay (yep, we did a split stay).

Up next, our arrival at our resort and THE BEST CASTMEMBER ever!

yeah for leaving and for a relatively painless trip! Leaving late is definitely a bummer though, as my trip report shows - sometimes there are reasons for being a little late ;) ... or they could just be inconsiderate

That was good that you got your AP extended by a month and definitely the type of thing Disney should do when great and loyal guests like you have a less than magical experience

Ooh, excited to hear about your experience with the Best Castmember Ever!

YAY DISNEY :cool1:

Your plate on the rental says Yez!!! :rotfl: And yes, you definitely had one happy hubby (you look pretty happy too)

Yeah, you have arrived at your happy place! Great customer service getting an extra month on your AP! :thumbsup2

So looking forward to more!

I always find it somewhat amusing that people need to tell you their opinion about how you should run things in your life! I'm sure, if you couldn't afford the trip, you would have cancelled!:rolleyes1

I, for one, I am happy that you were able to still go! Great travel day by the sounds of it...travel day is one of my favourites!!!

Can't wait for the next update!

I just love seeing that WDW arch. Glad Disney took good care of you. I realllllly wish they had a "frequent visitor" program with discounts and perks. I know about annual passes and bounceback but I mean something special after so many trips.

So glad you decided to proceed with your trip- ain't nobody's bizness but your own (and ours...)

Ooooo- tell me more... Is there a coffee rivalry between you and Mark? Is he a DD guy while you are a Starbucks gal?

If so, I'm with Mark, as a New England native and former employee of Dunkin Donuts.

:surfweb:

GREAT pictures of the welcome arch!

Altogether, not a bad arrival day.

:thumbsup2

People need to MYOB-geez. Yay for arrival day. You both look so happy on the plane. Good for Disney for making things right. You and your dang Starbucks....

Arrival day! Glad y'all had an easy travel experience and arrived safely.

I LOVE a great CM story, can't wait!

Mark was angry because I again got Precheck and was going to be able to go through a separate line and not have to take my laptop out of my bag, take off my shoes, etc. rotfl2::rotfl2:

Lucky you! pixiedust: The last 2 flights we've taken my DW has been selected for Precheck while I had to take the long, slow line. Maybe TSA is discriminating agaist men? :confused3 Anyway, glad to see you had a stress-free trip down!

I'm so glad you guys decided to take the trip. Just want both of you needed! I love getting TSA Pre-Check! I'm surprised they didn't let both of you go through though. Yay for arriving and getting the AP extensions. Can't wait to hear about your amazing CM.

Love reading your reports...can't wait to see the next installment on this one we leave on the 13 for our annual Food and Wine trip!!!:cool1:party:

Hooray for getting started. Looks like a pretty awesome start and a couple of minor bumps. :goodvibes

I am glad DTD was easy to get in and out of to get the pass situation taken care of.

Ready for the awesome cast member as those sometimes are hard to find. :rolleyes1

yeah for leaving and for a relatively painless trip! Leaving late is definitely a bummer though, as my trip report shows - sometimes there are reasons for being a little late ;) ... or they could just be inconsiderate

You had good reasons; this was two young couples who decided to go back and get coffee and food for the plane ride AFTER they announced boarding would take place in five minutes!

That was good that you got your AP extended by a month and definitely the type of thing Disney should do when great and loyal guests like you have a less than magical experience

I don't complain unless it is something really bad or irritating. Trust me, I NEVER expected them to do that.

Ooh, excited to hear about your experience with the Best Castmember Ever!

Seriously, HE WAS THE BEST!

:yay: Arrival day!

Megan, arrival day is the best!

Getting your AP's extended it a nice plus, Disney has awesome customer service :thumbsup2

It was so nice of them and never expected.

YAY DISNEY :cool1:

We are finally there.

Your plate on the rental says Yez!!! :rotfl: And yes, you definitely had one happy hubby (you look pretty happy too)

I didn't notice that until you pointed it out Jeanette. Yes, we were both happy.

Yeah, you have arrived at your happy place! Great customer service getting an extra month on your AP! :thumbsup2

It was customer service above and beyond!

So looking forward to more!

Hopefully by next Wednesday I should get an update done (and I still have your TR to catch up on).

I always find it somewhat amusing that people need to tell you their opinion about how you should run things in your life! I'm sure, if you couldn't afford the trip, you would have cancelled!:rolleyes1

I agree; if I wanted their opinion, I would ask for it. If our house needed a major repair or something, we would have cancelled. But as of then, all it needs is new carpet before we move. I'm certainly not going to lose my home because I chose to go on vacation.

I, for one, I am happy that you were able to still go! Great travel day by the sounds of it...travel day is one of my favourites!!!

It was a relatively smooth travel day...my favorite kind.

Can't wait for the next update!

Thanks, Queen.

I just love seeing that WDW arch. Glad Disney took good care of you. I realllllly wish they had a "frequent visitor" program with discounts and perks. I know about annual passes and bounceback but I mean something special after so many trips.

That arch just tells you that you are entering a world of magic. It would be nice if there were some kind of discount for "frequent" visitors.

So glad you decided to proceed with your trip- ain't nobody's bizness but your own (and ours...)

Thanks, Dee. :)

Ooooo- tell me more... Is there a coffee rivalry between you and Mark? Is he a DD guy while you are a Starbucks gal?

Oh yes there is. Mark will only drink Starbucks if he is desperate. He used to drink it all the time but then he started complaining that it tasted like perfume. I've never noticed because I don't drink it straight...I drink cappuccinos.

If so, I'm with Mark, as a New England native and former employee of Dunkin Donuts.

:surfweb:

Well, you have Mark to keep you in good company.

GREAT pictures of the welcome arch!

Thanks; just wish the cars had NOT been there.

Altogether, not a bad arrival day.

:thumbsup2

It worked out well and just got better.

People need to MYOB-geez. Yay for arrival day. You both look so happy on the plane. Good for Disney for making things right. You and your dang Starbucks....

I agree; if I want your advice, I'll ask for it (the only one who gets away with it is Nicki). Thanks; we were happy to finally get away from the stress. I was floored by what Disney did. Are my girls still requesting their Starbucks fix? :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Arrival day! Glad y'all had an easy travel experience and arrived safely.

Thanks, Mary.

I LOVE a great CM story, can't wait!

Oh it is a great one.

Lucky you! pixiedust: The last 2 flights we've taken my DW has been selected for Precheck while I had to take the long, slow line. Maybe TSA is discriminating agaist men? :confused3 Anyway, glad to see you had a stress-free trip down!

And guess who got Pre Check going home? Yep, NOT my hubby. Maybe it is a thing against men. Thanks...I love smooth trips down.

By the way, you aren't far from me. Mark often umps baseball games in Romeoville. :)

I'm so glad you guys decided to take the trip. Just want both of you needed! I love getting TSA Pre-Check! I'm surprised they didn't let both of you go through though. Yay for arriving and getting the AP extensions. Can't wait to hear about your amazing CM.

Yes and that was a big factor in our decision...we really needed it. Mark got to go with me when we left Orlando last year, but none of our trips since. :confused3 Oh I love the CM that I will be talking about.

:rotfl2::rotfl2: Oh I am sure Andy here on the DIS is going to have a field day with your Starbucks Count.

Love reading your reports...can't wait to see the next installment on this one we leave on the 13 for our annual Food and Wine trip!!!:cool1:party:

:welcome::welcome: thank you for joining. :) I will not get to Food & Wine for many, many updates. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me and I'll try to answer. I do have a list of favorite foods. You are going to love it.

Hooray for getting started. Looks like a pretty awesome start and a couple of minor bumps. :goodvibes

Just a slow two couples, but otherwise, smooth sailing.

I am glad DTD was easy to get in and out of to get the pass situation taken care of.

We didn't wait long at all and it took them a matter of moments to hook us up. Trust me, I had my Confirmation Number and the phone number of the gal I dealt with in case of problems.

Ready for the awesome cast member as those sometimes are hard to find. :rolleyes1

Yes, they can be hard to find. But this one made up for all the bad ones we've had over the last couple of years.

Subscribing! We got back on the 20th so we were able to experience food and wine on opening day... It is dragging us back next year too!! ;) looking forward to hearing more!!

:welcome::welcome: Ashley. Thank you for joining. That darn Food & Wine. :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: I'm going to go subscribe to your TR right now and will catch up on it when we get home. I have to go to bed shortly as we want to go to a nice, leisurely breakfast before we head to the airport tomorrow for our afternoon flight home.

You two always bring a smile to my day! So sorry to hear about Mark's job but happy you decided to go to Disney after all! Great start to your trip - Starbucks and well .....more Starbucks :rotfl2:

Starbucks? They should get you on their payroll.

I never heard about the TSA pre-check until we took this trip. Huh, who knew?

Glad Disney did something to try to make up for your last trip. Extending your APs was a class move.

We drove by DTD and it is an absolute mess. Saw the parking garage too.

Can't wait to read more. :goodvibes
