Marathon Weekend 2016

DopeyBadger, you are awesome. Thank you for doing this! On a separate note, several months ago there was some talk of a Dis meet-up. I believe it was going to be at Pop Century on Friday afternoon (10K day), not sure of time. Is this happening? If so when? It would be great to get to meet folks and put faces to names! Anyone have info, please share.

You can add me too

Race:. Full
Name: Ed
Bib: 56xx
Dis'er name: SunDial. Yes you could use it to time me :lmao:
Costume: right now just the normal running shirt/shorts
Corral "J"
Early arriver to corrals
Lining up towards front of corral
Pace: Because of the minimal training, realistic pace 12:45 to 13:00

I remember reading that. Trying to test my memory, I think it was FFagawi that had said that. He will not be at this year's marathon weekend.

I would love to meet as many of you as possible. I will be driving up today morning.

what exactly happened
Well, let's just say massive carbs + massive carbs = massive GI issues. The thinking is to use sports drinks or gels/shot blocks, not both at once. Drink water with the latter to dilute the sugar/carbs. Otherwise you'd essentially be taking double what you need and most people's system couldn't handle it.

Hey all, Steve Swanson here! Looking forward to my first half-marathon this January! I have no idea how I got talked into this, or what I'm doing, but I have been "training" over the summer. I plan to walk most of it, and I feel like I'm fit enough that I won't get scooped by the bus. I'd love to meet up with everyone, reach out to me here or on Facebook!

Hey, Steve. Welcome to the greatest group of Dis'ers!
Hope your first half goes well (actually, it will be fabulous... after all, you'll be at Disney!). :mickeyjum

Try to check DopeyBadger's list of fellow runners - it might be easier for you to find us if you know which outfit people will be wearing!

I've enjoyed reading through all of the tips and advice! I have a tip to share, I'll be tucking a plastic grocery bag in a pocket on my skirt to put all of the post run paraphernalia in! I remember after W&D trying to juggle bottles, food, etc. I wished that I'd brought a bag along to dump it all in! Not gonna forget it this time!

Does anyone know if another party can pick up a preordered pin?
Asking because I bought a goofy race pin but will not be picking it up. I will gladly offer it up to someone who might not have chosen to buy one- I just don't know if you can pick it up. Putting the question out to the experts. Anyone know?
I don't think someone else can pick up pre-ordered items for you. In the past I had to initial for them when I got my bib.

@DopeyBadger -- fantastic, thanks!

Ran 20 miles this morning and it felt great! SO happy to cross that milestone. Here is the Strava link if you are interested. Got to the river just at sunrise so I included some photos, but I'm not sure if you can see them without being a member.

My mile splits got slower at the end; that was partly fatigue, but I didn't pause my watch for water fountains, photo stops or traffic lights, and there were many of those, especially in the last five miles. However, I'm sure it will be the same on race day so I guess I should take that into account in estimating my pace.

Thanks again for your great tips, encouragement and amusement. Good luck, all -- we're on the home stretch now!

P.S. The only merchandise I want is the car magnet or decal. That's getting a place of pride on the back of the minivan! :yay:
Hahaha--you ran right by where I live!

I have a kind of strange question. I know that a lot of people wear garbage bags to help them stay warm in the corrals. Is there a place to get rid of them at race time? I want to do this too but I wouldn't want to create a hazard for someone behind me...
Also, is main st. bakery open during the 1/2?
Thank you all in advance!

They have trash cans on the outside of the corrals, just make your way to the edge and toss them on the other side of the fence and that will get them out of the way.

Not sure about the bakery being open, carb loading with a cinnamon roll during the race is generally not recommended.

Thanks for the info on the drinks. That is interesting. :) I don't think I'd want one if I was really running like I had been training for, but if this hip issue pushes me to having to walk it or take it slower, a margarita might just be in order. (I'm trying to stay positive, LOL).

@DopeyBadger - thanks for that!

I think @mbwhitti and I have established our three main goals: Beat the balloon ladies, ride Everest and then grab a cocktail for the finish line somewhere in the World Showcase.

If any of y'all see two gals wearing these shirts and having more fun than should be legal for a marathon, say hey! It's probably us!

That is my same goals since this will be my first Full as I am doing Dopey!

I've never noticed any shops or rides in MK being open during the Half or Full. I may be incorrect, but it seems like their main concern is getting everyone through MK before the park officially opens.

For those riding Everest... remember to add roller coaster riding to your training! I violated this rule, rode Everest, and my neck and shoulders cramped around
mile 18! I'm only being slightly silly... just a "heads up."
That's exactly why I think I'll opt out of Everest (and totally regret it after, of course). It often leaves me with a tight neck, which in turn can trigger a migraine. I do not need that in the middle of my first full!

I'll second this tip! The bag also does great double duty by carrying all your race stuff while using porta potties, so your pockets don't empty out in the stall :)
