Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

Darn!! I don't use my Facebook account. My career has me in public contact in such a way that having a Facebook account is more of an annoyance than it's worth. It's kind of weird when people you've never met say that they tried to look you up on Facebook and wanted to know if they could be your friend, especially when you've only known them about 10 minutes at that point and you're not going to know them in a non-business way. It started happening so often that it was literally getting beginning to creep me out. The sucky part is then I miss out on stuff like this and the Dooney and Bourke group and the Harvey group ....
I only use Facebook for buying/selling stuff. I didn't have an account for years and then made one so I could sell SparkleSkirts. :)

The bad thing about joining these groups is that you (well, I) get caught up in the excitement of every. new. release. Not good for the bank account!

I saw someone mention a cutoff time for the buses...what cutoff time is that and why am I hearing about this just now :p?

My plan was to get on a bus from GF around 5:15, is that not workable?

Not at all. There is a hike to the corral starts and you will miss the start of the race then!

You should be in line for the bus by 4:15AM at the latest.

Looking now at altering all our dinner reservations. My husband has decided to become vegetarian. Luckily, Disney is very accommodating but probably shouldn't have us go to our favorite meat places for dinner.

If you're running? Probably not. It will take a while for the bus to get there and it's about a 30-minute walk from security check to your corral. For the half and full at Marathon Weekend, we got to the parking lot around 5:10 and then walked to our corral, but that was only because we were towards the back and weren't dropping bags. For the half, we got there as Corral H and I started moving up. For the full, we had a little more standing around to do.
If you're spectating? Absolutely.

Yes, running...I expect to be in Corral E or F and usually arrive at races about half an hour after the start time, and find my corral gets going about five minutes after that. I can't stand getting there too early and being bored in the crowd waiting to start. This is my first Disney event though. Wow, that sucks then- have to rethink a bunch of plans :(. Gosh, that's early! Is it really a 30-minute walk?

Yes - between 20-30 minutes. It's almost a mile from where you go through security and then drop bags to out to the corrals.

Also, Disney Transportation is notoriously terrible, slow and uncoordinated (like, the lines at the hotels and how busses show up). On top of that, from GF you'd likely need to take the Monorail and not a bus, which is another added walk just to get to the Wonder Lot.

It's all in the official event guide - here's the link!

Since we have almost 12 hours until waiver talk starts again, :jester: I need some advice....I can't decide if I need to run, worry, or just rest. Yesterday while at work my hip started hurting. Not terrible, joked that I was getting old and assumed it would go away. I can't figure out what I did, but today it hurts from my left hip down to the side/back of my leg to my ankle/foot. I haven't run in a week (crazy week at work), I haven't slipped in the snow, I haven't even done anything crazy with the horses (I train horses and give riding lessons). While sitting on the couch I can stretch my leg/knee/ankle and I don't feel any pain. But standing, if I shift my weight on my left foot, I feel the pain from my hip down to my ankle. I usually get in 5-8 miles of walking (and a little jogging) at work a day. Laying in bed with the heating pad now. Anyone ever experience anything similar?

What?????? I just cannot comprehend a life without steak!!!!

Wow! Y'all were active while I was a work today! Let's see...

1. I train with headphones and it all races other than Disney, I run with one in. There is just something about the atmosphere at Disney races. I like to soak it all in and hear everything.

2. I carry my ID and I also wear a Road ID, because I just don't go anywhere without ID.

3. Yes you have to get there super early. No it's not too boring. It's exciting! Everyone is excited and talking, and there is a DJ and a dance party!

No need to worry, but it's likely just your IT band acting like a big, fat jerk. Your IT band is a big, thick tissue that runs from your hip to your knee - it usually helps to stabilize your knee. But when that goes and you start to favor things, it can affect your calf and ankle ... at least that's how it happens for me!

Do you have anything like a foam roller or The Stick? Those would be the first way to help! And then ice before heat - especially on your hip and ankle!

After that, take a look at this article - here are some stretches to help:

Thanks Keels! My first response was "NOOOOOOOOOO" not what I need 2 weeks before the race! I've always wondered what the IT pain runners talk about was. In a weird way, it makes me feel like a real runner!

No foam roller or The Stick. Guess that means I need to go to the running store this weekend!

From my doctor-friend S:
"I wouldn't freak - it's probably just more tightness than anything. Focus on stretching for several days, with cross-training as opposed to running/jogging. I wouldn't have her run again until she can walk without pain, and then try light jogging. Definitely shouldn't be down more than a week total. Sounds like it's new and when she hurt, she altered her run pattern and that caused her calf to hurt."

And go for a foam roller over The Stick to start with - it hurts like a MAJOR B, but it feels so good after!

Ok, so no monorail offered for 5K and 10K?? What gives :( Also, what do y'all wear to hold id's, phone, etc? How long do most of y'all spend at the expo? Getting really excited, especially after listening to a podcast recently! Still nervous and feel like we are so unprepared, but excited!

Monorail generally only runs for the halfs - and the full at WDW Marathon weekend. It's usually mentioned on the Planning Tab for each race under "Transportation".

I wear a SparkleSkirt to hold things, or I put them in the pouch of my Nathan hydration belt.
For the Expos - I've been there as long as three hours (which involves early waiting time for races I cared about purchasing merchandise for) down to less than 30 minutes as an in-and-out to just pick up my bib, shirt and leave.

Thank you! Are spectators allowed to park in the remainder of the Epcot parking lot while waiting, or is it only drop off and they'll have to park elsewhere?

They are allowed.

Road ID....how quick did they ship? Do I still have time before Princess? It would have to be in hand by like the 16th....

So fast.

If you're getting the Slim band, overestimate your wrist. I got the small and it was just so tight, though I don't have huge wrists. But...I wrote them to ask how we could do a fast exchange, and (don't tell anyone) they just sent me the mediums in the colors I had ordered, didn't charge, and didn't ask for the small ones back. I *love* them. (I ordered one metal ID and 5 bands, by the way)

I keep thinking I need to get one. More so for training runs than anything.

My husband is sooooo much happier if I have that ID on me for outside runs. Even though he knows I also carry ID.

Where are you going? I've been veggie for something like 27 years and might have some thoughts.

That does NOT (not not not) work for Disney runs. My best friend and I did W&D 2014 and got to the corrals nearly 2 hours early. We were towards the back because of my slow time. As we were slowly getting ready to start walking forward to eventually get up for our start, there were STILL BUSES sitting there, nowhere near the dropoff spot.

We went from W&D to the Seattle Half 2ish weeks later, where we got up, had breakfast, used the restroom, walked 2 minutes from the hotel to the start, and it started 5 minutes later.

It just doesn't work for disney runs.

Ouch.

Arnica, epsom salts baths, and "the stick" or something similar.

Ok, so no monorail offered for 5K and 10K?? What gives :(

Doesn't seem so. Agreed. I booked Bay Lake specifically for the monorail.

Also, what do y'all wear to hold id's, phone, etc?

Running belt, flipbelt, I have a pocket on one leg of my Sweet Sport Skirts running shorts...not all at once, LOL, but those are my options. And if it's cold so I'm wearing my warmer running jacket the whole time, I load up those pockets. Makes my pictures look funny, but oh well.

Monorail generally only runs for the halfs

That's not what people were saying 10 months ago. Which is why I booked Bay Lake. Many were saying that they ran the monorail for all the events, NOT just the Half.
